The Sphinx

The Sphinx is the largest surviving sculpture from the ancient world, measuring 241 feet in length and in parts 65 feet in height. Really big cat-dude! Parts of the uraeus (a sacred cobra that protected from evil), the nose, and ritual beard are missing; the beard is now displayed in the British Museum.

The purpose of the Sphinx had now become a little plainer. The Egyptian Atlanteans had built it as their grandest statue, their sublimest figure of remembrance, and they had dedicated it to their Light-god, the Sun.   -Paul Brunton

Wow, interesting! I've heard that all those ancient piramyds and things, like the Sphinx, still are mysteries of how the Egyptians made them. It seems our world knowledge is shrinking from what it had been in the Bible times, even though this century has produced many tech items and stuff, :P I hope I am not confusing you! I was never a great talker or explainer, lol

It is nice to have you aboard the H.M.S. Homeschoolblogger. I look forward to reading your posts, especially if they are on history (it is one of my favorite things to learn.)

I wonder how big that beard is at the British Museum? If the whole sculpture is 214' long, than I would think it must be 6-7' tall! I can just see the little sign in front of it:

"This is a piece of the Great Sphinx's beard. Shaved of by relic hunters in the 19th century, it eventually came to live here at the British Museum (Trumpets sound!). It is stored in the Hair Clippings Room, along with a lock of Anne Boleyn's hair, and an eyelash from William the Conquerer. Attempts to return the beard to its natural habitat have failed, as there is no superglue strong enough to right the wrong of our treasure obsessed ancestors. Negotiations with the Egyptian government about the possibility of convincing the Great Sphinx to grow a new beard have been stalled since 1914, on account of the fact that Mr. Sphinx refuses to give his opinion... Thank you for visiting the British Museum (Trumpets sound!)"

Later,

BFH
