Think before you jump! (and some giveaways)

Posted in Encouragement and Other Thoughts

You've heard the old phrase (or lecture) If all of your friends jumped off a cliff, would you?! I had heard that a time or twenty growing up and I hate to admit it, but I have also said that to my own kids (even though I totally promised myself I would never say those words when I was a grownup)! I imagine they took that sound piece of advice exactly as I did when I was their age-- a la Charlie Brown's teacher... y'know, Waahhhh waaaah wa wahh waaaah wah.

In fact, those words came out of my mouth recently when one of my kids gave another one a wedgie. Yup, that's right, a wedgie! First of all, it's not a family ritual or pasttime to give swirlies or wedgies in this house. Second, umm... we homeschool so where did they get this bright idea? Third, that's just plain old mean and disrespectful to the other person. When the perpetrator of the aforementioned wedgie was further interrogated, his feeble defense was Well, my friend Luke does it! Ahhh... so Just because Luke thinks it's a good idea and fun, does that really make it the right thing to do? And this is the precise spot where you would insert the oft used phrase And if Luke jumped off a cliff, would you do it too?

Please head on over to Heart of the Matter to read THE REST

Also, HOTM has a couple of giveaways going on right now where you can win some books or tickets to HOTM's Virtual Homeschooling Conference-- which is just around the corner!

Jul. 21, 2008 - Soooo true!

Posted by deedeeuk

I finally gave up on trying to make an early start here. Every book I read and every one I spoke to seemed to say that ' kids work best in the morning so do all the school work then'! Like it was some biological thing that was unavoidable - kids can't think after 12pm or something!

Actually, in reality, mine can't think properly BEFORE 12pm!! We are all late in the day people. End of story. If I give them a workbook page to do at 9am they are still working on the same one at 2pm!!!! If I give it to them at 12:30pm, they have it finished by 12:45pm! They simply work better later on.

So, armed with this enlightened information we do chores and errands in the morning and then sit down and hit the books as it were. Works much better in this house, even if it does have everyone looking on and scratching their heads! LOL!

Ahhhh, the infamous wedgie.

Sometimes a Mom has to do what a Mom has to do. That saying has been around forevah because it really does have merit, huh?

Jul. 21, 2008 - Loved your post at HOTM

Marsha,
I left you a response over at HOTM but I wanted to come here and leave you one too.

I LOVED your post. Thanks for sharing.
Here's what I left you at HOTM:
This was an awesome post!

I loved every minute of it.

Every word was just great.

I will start my 17th year of home schooling this year. I spent several in the beginning trying to be like other people until Papa God got ahold of me. I've been swimming against the tide ever since.

I am right there with ya on all this.... "Follow God in your home school, and whatever works for you...go with it!"

Thanks for sharing...again, this was awesome!

My line that I thought I'd never say is, "Because I said so." It is so stupid. But I USE it! ugh.

Jul. 21, 2008 - We can relate

Posted by Jen

Don't worry, I think any of us moms of boys can relate...been there, done that. I think they were born knowing how to do it, but that doesn't mean we have to let it continue...hee hee. We have outlawed the wedgies in our house.:)

Great article.....I've often wondered if I should get this or that curriculum that EVERYONE just loves, or why so-and-so hates the curriculum that we absolutely adore.....your article refreshed my vision to do what's right for our family!

And I'm playing along (or blogging along, as it were) with your tag.......come check it out.....um, when I get it up!!

I enjoyed reading your post over at HOTM! I, too, am a homeschooling mom of three little boys (6,4, and almost 2) who has been married for 12 years. :)

I've enjoyed my visit here at your blog. Lots of ideas, encouragement, and fun.

Jul. 24, 2008 - Oh, my!

Posted by tiredmom

I've been homeschooling for thirteen years now and I still run out and at least look at whatever is new and hot in the homeschool community. I've just accepted the fact that I'm a curriculum junkie.

Oh, and my husband has ALREADY used the "I hiked 83 miles on a broken leg, so suck it up, pansy" line on the kids!

Aug. 27, 2008 - Your son

Posted by Corinne Kligmann

Marsha,
I hope you get this message as this is the only way I know to reach you.
I got your note today on Rachael's caring bridge site. I am so sorry to hear about your son. I wish I could say I don't know how you feel but I do. I wish that I could make this easier for you and for your family. I weep for you and I grieve with you. May the Lord carry you through this terrible time and if I can help or if you want to talk, know that I am here and one step ahead on the walk you must now take.

All my sympathy and prayers,
Corinne
