Is that onion that I smell?

Posted in Kids-Family-Funnies-Etc

Dash is a very loving boy.  He has always been huggy and emotional, walking around with his heart on his sleeve.  The aforementioned sleeve, however, is beginning to SMELL!

Aggghhh!  I'm not talking about stinky-outside smell but stinky-body-odor-because-I'm-growing-up smell!  He's only 9 years old for crying out loud.  Is it really time for that already?!

So daddy gave him a lesson on proper deodorant usage (not anti-perspirant... just deodorant).

For some reason I have an odd feeling of boo-hoo-he's-growing-up mixed with some sort of maternal-pride.  How weird is that?!  Anyone else feel like that sometimes?

Lest ye think that it is a sign of maturity-- trust me, it isn't!  When I pointed out the body odor, he laughed and proceeded to stick his arm pit right on my nose.  Yes, he definitely has his daddy's sense of humor (if that's what you want to call it)!

Marsha dear...

I have no idea what you mean because my boys stink no matter what. I can't get the "backyard" smell off of them. But anyway, yes, Gevan and Jacob wear deodorant now. It is strange...very strange.

ROFL. We haven't hit the smell yet but DS knows that his dad and all of his brothers were very blond until they hit puberty when all of their hair darkened. I thought I saw some brownish hairs on his head the other day. What was his response?

"Oh Yeah, hitting puberty. It's coming" said in a very sing songy voice. Now why in the world would this be such a good thing for him? But it did make me laugh.

Bubba just turned 9 last week and he's been wearing deodorant for over 2 years now! I was really surprised when I started smelling my 6 year old! MIL says he needs to drink more water but I've had no success with that! And getting the boy to put deod on has been something else... you'd think he wouldn't want other people smellin him. Our Walmart here (and health food store) carries a safe alternative it's a salt based roll on that actually works really well when he remembers to wear it :)

Hope the air clears 'round there!

Too funny- the fact that it is a sign of maturity yet he displayed goofy immature (yet so funny) behavior.
Praying for you and your family! I hope you have a good week and enjoy the early signs of Autumn!

You ain't smelled nothin' til you've smelled a 13-y/o after football practice! Or even his stuff! He takes off his equipment and leaves it in the mudroom while he showers and it stinks up the whole mudroom!

RYC-- actually, when the water seeped into the basement two wks ago, Huz took off and left ME to take c/o it! Grrr-- I was not happy and he knew it. And you know, I'm glad *he* didn't work on it while *I* was gone, b/c he would have thrown out a lot of stuff that I want to keep. (Or maybe that would be a good thing...) I already had to dig a slip'n'slide out of the dumpster from when he cleaned the garage over the weekend.

What is it about little boys??? Even my 5 year old can be outside for all of 30 seconds and come in smelling like a wet puppy. I grew up with a big brother and you would think I would be somewhat immune to it but evidently I've blocked those memories. LOL

lol... I think that's just a 'guy' sense of humor in general. My hubby would do the SAME thing,, haha Now the trick is getting him to remember to apply the stuff each day. When I was first introduced to deodorant, i seemed to always 'conveniently' forget to put it on... but once I had enough of my friends tell me that I needed it, I never forgot again!! :)

Oh I know what you are going through! Even though we have been through the, "how to apply deodorant" steps, time and again, my youngest prefers not to go through them. His armpits are highly ticklish, he can even tickle himself! Putting on deodorant is a rather painful experience for him. It's sad when you have to stand there and watch your son cry while putting on deodorant.

Oct. 1, 2008 - I'm not ready either

I am not ready for my little ones to grow up either.
Thanks for the chuckle...and the sentiment.
Ah, poor mommies---they grow up too fast!

Just this morning I held Ava Rose and told her that I wanted to hold her a bit longer because soon she will be too big to hold. She said, "you don't want me to grow up big?"
Such wisdom at 3!

I don't want her to grow up at all.
I DO want her out of diapers though! LOL

DS will be 9 in 4 months! Is this what I have to look forward to? Already?!? I mean, I have already had enough of hearing the "passing of gas" followed with, "Hey better out of the basement than out of the attic!" The kid doesn't realize that is truly is better "out of the attic than the basement." Bleh.
So I guess I will be also waiting for the McDonald burger smell. Yeah, we don't like the clown either....
Thanks for the heads up, Marsha.

Oct. 1, 2008 - Boys And Smell

Posted by SteveWalden

Yes, we too have discovered that 9 year-old boys do smell, and they can't tell they do either. Why he needs to shower when he just did that yesterday is beyond him still.

Ditto too on the parental pride mixed with boo-hoo-ishness. As I understand, this doesn't any get easier over the next 10 years.

I have no idea what causes some kids to get it younger, but Rebekah has it and she isn't even 8 yet! Of course it has only happened on days when it is really, really hot and she is very sweaty, but still, it was definitely BO. Eeeek!

This summer we adopted the Drews family haircut for Andrew. It certainly made cutting his hair a breeze!

Oh my word. We are smelling my 9yo too! For about a month now, we've had to start getting him in the habit of deodorant too. Matter of fact, that alone doesn't seem to be enough! We are working on having him shower every day or at least every other.

I didn't know this happened at this age!! I'm so glad to hear that my boy is not the only one with smelly pits! hahahah.

I've loved your last couple posts. Very encouraging.
Still praying.

Yes, it's time for that, dear friend! As the Mom of two boys, I remember well the day we discovered they needed a little help in the body odor department. If it makes you feel better, they do start to care that they stink and as they mature, you'll find that a huge part of your drug store bill is body sprays, deodorant, body wash, cologne, etc. It's true!! They smell better than me! I always know when my oldest son is leaving the house because I hear the "ssssst. . .ssssst" of the body spray can going off about 30 times! LOLOL

You are in my daily thought and prayers!!

God bless you ~ Julie

Been there, done that. And we even started out with nice little cute, perfume smelling deodorants, but about another year or so down the line found that didn't work! Now when we're shopping for those supplies - it's straight to the name-brand, full-strength stuff!

And yes, while we (mature) parents think "eww" these kids still think it's funny!

Lucky me, I was born without a sense of smell! But that's not such a good thing when my husband noticed my oldest's body odor and I began to wonder how often he had offended others without my knowing! But I know what you mean - it's a mixed bag of emotions. My oldest is now 13 and is getting a bit of a mustache as well! How can this be? Not yet, anyway!

The hard part is getting them to USE the deodorant!

You are still in my prayers,

Oct. 5, 2008 - BO! Oh Boy!!

Posted by JacqueDixonSoulRestES

I read this last week, and I can't believe I didn't comment...
But, I have to comment today, because BO is not such a noticeable problem when you live with goats... male goats... the bucky kind.

Eric came in today after tangling with the bucks, and I thought I was going to pass. out. I saw him coming and told him to STOP. [I could smell him when he came into the room] I didn't let him come any closer, but, oh boy, could I smell him!

Now, it isn't always that bad with the goats, only when they are in rut, but oh boy! and, it isn't a "musk smell" either! LOL

So, while I am beginning to notice the 'young man smell', I am thankful it is not as bad as he smells coming in from the barn!! Hahaa

Take care my friend, and I hope this gave you a good laugh! And, btw, I hope you know you are always welcome to bring Dash up here and check it out!!

Thanks for your encouraging comment on my anniversary post! I appreciated it. As for the football game, well, my other comment on that post (which you probably read) was from a TX "buddy" as well. It is so odd to think of things like sunscreen and football games in the same sentence. :-) And then I have a bloggy buddy from AZ who says it is still in the triple-digits there (or was last week, anyway). Here, we've been below freezing already (in the early morning) and have had daily fires in the fireplace for an entire week! Like many others around here, we are determined to stick out early Oct w/o turning on the heat, even when it is 62 degrees in the house.

Now that i think about it, I made an earlier comment on this post about stinky 13-y/o football players. Now I will try to imagine the stink of a 13-y/o football player in the Texas heat! (No thanks.)

Yup, they get stinky . . . and tall, too! I understand exactly what you mean about the proud plus sad feeling. My boys had a friend visit for the weekend awhile back, and after a day spent outdoors, they were ready to be hosed down. Their friend, who was 8 at the time, took off his little shirt for his bath and I almost fell down. Big-boy stinky. I never imagined it happening until much later. So I feel for you. I cannot even imagine how this house will be smelling in a few years.
And on a side note- Marsha, you are so very brave and strong. You are such an encouragement to me. Your faith is a beautiful thing, and I feel so blessed after reading your blog. You guys are in our prayers daily.

This post made me smile. My 9 year old boy came up to me a couple of weeks ago and said "My friends all say I stink". He wasn't upset, just matter of fact and added that he thought he needed me to buy deodorant. My mature answer was " Are you sure, let me smell!" Yup. A faint odor, darn! His 5 year old brother watched that and now enjoys sticking his nose right in his bro's armpit to check the situation out daily.
