Abstract Noun

Posted in Kids-Family-Funnies-Etc

Yesterday 9yo Dash and I were discussing the differences between an abstract noun and a concrete noun.

Me: Give me an example of a concrete noun.

Dash: A pencil!

Me: Give me an example of an abstract noun.

Dash thinks for a couple of seconds.

Dash (in a calm and matter-of-fact voice): Christian.

Me (after regaining my composure):  Why do you say that?

Dash:  Because I can't see him or touch him.

Me:  Ummm... okay.  That's a very sweet answer although I don't think that is what the people that made this workbook quite had in mind.  But I guess you're right...  How about we just skip this and move to the next one?

Dash:  Okay, mommy.

It's always interesting to see when Christian will come up in our conversations.  Usually it's out of the blue and an unexpected surprise!  I am so glad that the boys are comfortable talking about Christian.  Sometimes we cry but other times it's very matter-of-fact with hardly a tear (okay, maybe just a little choking up)... remembering and laughing and talking as a family.  I am so thankful that God has kept us close-- close to Him and close to each other!

One of my prayers for your family is that you would be stronger, closer and closer to God. Praise the Lord. Thanks for sharing your heart. You are an encouragement to me.

What a great story!

May they never forget their little brother. He should be as natural to talk about as anything else. The tears and laughter are just as natural.

It so good to hear YOU talk about him. You are always in my prayers.

*Sniff* Thanks for sharing that.

How about some abstract nouns *related* to Christian and his absence in your lives? Words like HOPE, SADNESS, LOVE, FAITH, TRUST, LOSS, HEALING, PERSEVERANCE... Discussing abstract nouns often leads to discusions about far more important things!

I too am glad that you and your kids are able to talk so freely about your sweet little boy. I know it helps all of you to heal and stay close.

It is moments like these that let us see into the hearts of our kids. It just amazes me to be able to see what goes on in those little heads of theirs! Even though it seems he was a bit off base... I think he was right on!!!!!!!!
I have missed you lately, but this past week has just been very full. Which is good because it makes the time go by faster! Hope we can touch base soon!

I think that's a sign of good parenting. They have a foundation of deep truth, but also parents willing to talk about things in a light way too.

Good job mom and dad. :)

Nov. 9, 2008 - What a BLESSING!

Posted by JacqueDixonSoulRestES

Amanda had told me about this conversation when you posted it. I thought about it for awhile, how awesome it was, and I just have to tell you how blessed you both are.

Homeschooling allowed you to be the one who got that answer from him. It was not a teacher, but you. I was praising the LORD that you and he were so blessed to have had that conversation.
Not to mention the protection that he had by NOT having the conversation with a teacher who may have then had to delve into his feelings and ask him where and what and how and probably given a different aspect of where Christian is.
Anyway, I had to share that. God is good. In all things.
I am so glad that these things come up and it is a natural thing that brings you all closer.
PRAISE THE LORD!

LOVE and HUGS!!
praying for you all~ J

Hey Marsha.

I just read the first chapter of Heaven. It took me a while to remember to look it up at the library and then I wanted to find some reviews of the book by some reputable bible scholars....I found them. So I started to read.

Oh man. I am in tears. The first chapter alone gives me a hope (the biblical certain kind) that heaven is nothing like what I previously thought. That illustration of naturalism in CS Lewis' book The Silver Chair, totally caused me to see that this world that we are in is a pale copy, like a picture that has been scanned, then printed, then scanned again. It is faded and weak. And heaven is a wonderful place.

Thank you for posting about this book. Often I get wrapped up in other bible teachings and this one is causing me to step outside my box.

I am praying for you!!
