Finding treasures that I didn't even know were lost
Posted in Encouragement and Other Thoughts
Earlier this week, the boys' bedroom received a fresh coat of paint and some furniture rearranging. As I was cleaning out their toy box (because they didn't do a good job of it themselves), I was surprised to run across several of Christian's Treasures... waaaaay down at the bottom of the toy box. I thought I had already put away most of his things, but wouldn't you know it? There they were just waiting for me... and waiting for just the right time to be discovered! In fact, I didn't even realize these things were lost. I guess I had forgotten about them or thought they were tossed long ago.
The first thing I found was...

...Christian's birthday frog! It's squishy and rubbery and feels gross when you hold it-- all the things he loved most about it! This was perched atop his 3rd birthday cake and I remember him laughing and squealing with delight when he first saw it. He also enjoyed showing it off to his friends when they would visit.
The next treasure I discovered was this...

...Christian's once upon a time it was clean stuffed elephant. I think we acquired this when he was a baby-- perhaps a baby shower gift? I honestly don't remember. But I do remember Elephant keeping him company in his pack and play (ummm... we just didn't do a real crib this time around). And as Christian got older, this little guy was soft and worn and dirtied up just like his buddy Blankie. Except I just know Elephant was quite jealous of Blankie-- he just couldn't compete!
And as if that weren't enough blessings bestowed upon this mommy in one evening, God had this very last little guy waiting for me...

... Christian's bear! Yup, it's one of those cheap, tiny, and useless Happy Meal toys. (Please excuse Bear's nekkidness-- he used to own a little red shirt and only be half nekkid. I hope he's not embarrassed.) Some of our IRL friends and family might remember Bear. Christian carried him everywhere!!! I couldn't believe how attached he was to Bear. Maybe he liked it so much because of its small size and the ability to shove him in a pocket. Bear... wow, I wish I could adequately express the adoration that Christian had for him. It just really was his favorite buddy, y'all!
So where are they now?
Well, Elephant can be found lounging around my desk in the living room. Bear has endeared himself to David and imagines a life of travel to some exotic (and not so exotic) locales.
And frog? He sits on the kitchen windowsill just taking it all in and helping to remind me of one very real and important thing...

You are precious to me.
Thank you for your continued inspiration and glorious outlook.
I am so glad you found them. Your Father really loves you a lot, you know? And David and the boys. May you all continue to have his blessings and care poured out upon you.
We would all do well to remember that "God keeps his promises".
Love you,
J

That is simply amazing. Why He is so good to us, I will never understand. But He is so good. The mercy and lovingkindness that He has shown you increases my faith.
Can I tell you something sort of silly? I am praying that Bear will be safe while he is traveling and won't get lost. Even though it is just a stuffed bear. :-)

What a beautiful moment...thanks for sharing it. Your posts about Christian touch my heart in a very special way. I have a three year old and I can picture him doing and saying the very things that Christian did. I have grown very fond of your family although I've never met any of you. I just want to hug you all!! But I'll pray instead :)

Oh how sweet and how good God is to give you these sweet mementos os cheerished memories.
We have that same small bear. My hubby just took a week long trip. Hard for our family as we are used to having daddy here mostly everyday. He took this little bear with him and took photographs of/with little bear at all the locations he went. Then he's e-mail them to use. They made us laught and smile and let us see where and what dad was doing. He was with the airplane pilot, in a robe from the hotel, stadning tiny at a huge windoe looking out, etc. It was fun and it was a look alike bear. It's funny how little things can hold special memories.
I pray your heart keeps being encouraged by God daily until the time you reunite with Christian.

What a beautiful gift that was from God. Another chance to heal one more layer in your heart. I know what that is like with me healing of my dad passing. I find God knows what we need at the time we need it. I also find God knows that we need little momentoes to be able to remember the good times. Marsha I can't believe how many tears are running down my face as I write this. Please concider yourself (((HUGED))) my SSiC. I am sorry I haven't made it here in a long time. I seem to be barely blogging like I use to but still blogging.
Blessings and ((HUGS)) my SSiC

How totally wonderful and precious that you found these treasures! I love the idea that bear is going to be with your hubby in his travels - what a fantastic idea! God is SO good to remind us that He knows and cares and comforts! You're in my prayers always, Marshie! All of you are. What a glorious day it will be when you see Christian again and when I get the privilege of meeting such a special and wonderful child! I know the first thing he will do is make me laugh! :o)
Thank you for sharing all these treasures with us! It really made me smile - and isn't that really what Christian was all about?
Love you - Julie

Lucky Bear, Frog and Elephant. Just think, some other family could have bought them and they'd end up at Goodwill. Now, they get to be remembered and treasured.
I love when you write about Christian. You do know that your blog gets hits from all over the world and your constancy and encouraging words are what people are thirsty for.

How absolutely beautiful!!! Thank you for sharing Christian's precious treasures with us! What a poignant reminder of the pervasive influence a person has. Even when you think everything is put away, the evidence of his sweet presence can still be found.

Marsha, I don't blog anymore--that kind of got left behind when the kids went to school and I went to work--but I did stop by today just to peek in on you and others. I had to read through your blogs but when I got here my own tears flowed b/c each of those little items...we have something similar in our home. One son has and "Ellie" elephant he got as an infant and still keeps on his bed; and adores all animals esp stuffed ones. My other loves Frogs. So I just felt for you today---I know God must be carrying you through each day. Thank you for sharing with us what is going on with you.
