Poorly written randomness about shingles, brothers, Wii and shampoo
Posted in General Ramblings
I have shingles. There's a big stabbing pain in my neck... I'm okay though. Sure it hurts, but it's not debilitating or anything. I wonder if I just don't have a severe case of it? Or maybe I have a high tolerance for pain?
Could be the high tolerance thing. Speaking of high tolerance for pain and pains in the neck, that makes me think of my little brother Stephen (pronounced "steh-fun"). When we were little, my sisters were scared of my punk of a little brother. Scared of him because he was weird, mean and would hit really really really hard. But never fear, Marsha is here! I would go up to him and fight him even though I KNEW that it would really hurt me. It was just worth it and I learned to cope. Now that we're older and can talk about such things, I am happy to report that I also caused him much physical pain-- hooray for me! LOL
So I guess I should thank him for training me to be tough or something. Too bad he doesn't have a blog so I could send all of y'all there to harass him. I am very thankful that he turned out to be a pretty cool little brother-- although that didn't happen until he was almost 18 years old! Now he's a man and all-- husband to Terri AND father to my cutie-patootie nephew Caden (who is much fatter, rounder, noisier and busier now than he is in this picture).

You turned out pretty good for a punk of a little brother, Stephen! I guess I should cut you some slack though for being the only boy with 4 sisters. You can't exactly survive that and be completely "normal".
And my daddy up there? Yup, he is O-ficially re-tired! Congrats, daddy! My mom and dad have been spending their hours of free time on the Wii. They totally *heart* Wii Golf. So much so that my mom can use the terms par, bogey and birdy correctly! That's just weird, y'all.
On a final note, I have learned much and been quite encouraged from the A Woman Inspired Conference this week. But since I am not in a serious, self-reflecting mood, I would like to pose this particular question that I have been pondering since Shelly Ballestero's talk on beauty:
How do YOU choose a shampoo?
Are you swayed by commercials? Would you NOT buy a particular shampoo b/c the commercial or ad campaign is completely annoying a la Herbal Essences? Do you choose one strictly for its smell/scent? Do you still hold out hope that the claims on the packaging will be true? What is your favorite shampoo/conditioner of all time?
I'm just wondering.

Your insomniac friend in Washington had to comment....
Your opening line? It sounded like...
Hello, my name is Marsha....and I have shingles.
I about spit out my diet coke. (which isn't the reason for the insomnia, don't worry)
I found your post rambly and fun and the best part was that your parents play Wii. I'm jealous. I" want a Wii. They must be awfully cool.

i'm going to have to download the woman inspired stuff because i could not sit at my computer during the times it was going on not once this week.
i choose a shampoo based on sales and coupons. i get the free stuff or almost free stuff. but my favorite is what my sister gets me, she's a hair beautician person, it's called bain de terre. very tre la french.
that's why it's so good.
ya'll must all look like your mom. aisan genes must be so dominant!

For shampoo, I typically buy whatever is on sale. Suave works great for me! I always hated the Herbal Essences commercials, but found they have a great shampoo and conditioner for my daughter's curly hair. Having her happy with her hair is worth it.

I have never had shingles, but I hope you feel better soon.
As for shampoo, I am a packaging girl. I totally believe the bottle when it says it will make my my hair luscious and beautiful. :) Scent plays a big factor too. I don't have tv, so I can't be swayed by commercials, which is probably a good thing.
I buy Herbal Essence for myself and my daughter and the cheapo stuff for the boys (cuz they don't care)
Have a great day (I'm sure there's a Shampoo- part 2 post coming up, am I right?) :)

You're so funny!!! I have a cousin who is named Stefan... I love the pronunciation of the name. Anyway, I use Pantene... not for any other reason than it does great things for the shine of my hair and doesn't give me any itchy spots like the cheaper shampoo... but I would use the cheaper if I could. lol.

I'm still laughing at your title. Only you could think of that!. :)
Shampoo? hmmm... I go for the smell. I know. I'm weird. I'm the one you see in the shampoo aisle opening all of the tops to take a good whiff. Then I take note of the weather outside and go for a coordinating smell. If it is cold then I don't want a coconut or green apple smell. They just smell like summer to me. Vanilla and cinnamon do smell like winter though. So, it takes a good bit of time and effort for me to decide which shampoo to go with. Just don't ask me how I decide on hand lotions. Oh mercy. That is a blog post in and of itself.
I'll be praying that the shingles go away. That can't be much fun. Try sniffing shampoo. That may help.
love you!

Oh no...I hope you get over this quickly. My Mom had shingles, it mainly attacked her facial and mouth nerves. She was in tremendous amounts of pain.
Shampoo...I get bored easily, so I buy a few and trade off. Currently, I have TreSemme and Dove out. I go by scents and descriptions- lies, all lies! LOL

I do not purchase or give my money to any product/company such as Herbal Essence that uses such vulgar marketing. Why would I do that? Why would I line their pockets with money so that they can make more disgusting ads? Perhaps I can make a difference.

My aunt is a beautician so I by what she says I need, which is Redken. However, after nearly a decade of use I started getting scabs and horrible itching on my scalp that would not go away. All that other stuff doesn't do well with my dry, coarse, wavy hair (even if it does say moisturizing it just make it oily) so I started using a organic shampoo that is no more expensive than Redken, it's Giovanni. I have only seen it at one of our Krogers, so I am not sure where else they sell it. I think I was reacting to the Sodium Lauryl Sulfate which is suppose to be really bad for you :(

By the way, my husband has had shingles on his face which he said was VERY painful so it sounds like you are doing well with it. It does take awhile clear from what I understand. Hope you heal quickly!
Also BTW, your Dad looks so much like my dad and guess what...my parents are WII crazy too. They love the bowling and have become "pros" on it. They constantly call me and let me know who is in the lead and who got the perfect score. I found Walmart sells WII pj pants that I want to get them so bad. :)

I refuse to buy herbal Essence because of the commercials. My all time favorite hair products are about anything Aussie, and Infusium leave in conditioner... but I don't buy them often, as I'm too cheap :)
Have a blessed day!

You post about your brother reminds me a lot (and gives me hope for) my son - lol ( Although he only has 3 sisters to put up with, not 4.)
As far as choosing a shampoo...
I used to go by whatever was on sale - but then I started reading more and more about the dangerous chemicals in the majority of them - and we switched to more natural/organic shampoos. (Now we buy either Burt's Bees or Avalon Organics...you can get both at Wal-Mart.)
If you want to research the 'safety' of shampoos - here's a great website

I've had shingles...painful! I guess it depends on how bad the case and where it is. I had a pretty small case of them (maybe a 2 inch area), and they were on my abdomen. I may have had unnecessary surgery because of it though. I had a tremendous amount of pain in my right side and the doctor took out my appendix. Shortly after that (the next week) my shingles broke out. He said my appendix was only slightly inflamed. So, was it the shingles causing the pain, or was it the appendix? Was the shingles caused by having my appendix out? The world may never know! Hope you feel better SOON though!
Shampoo: I use Suave Coconut. 1: I love the smell. 2: I love the price (especially when I have a coupon). I only condition occasionally, and I use the conditioner that comes with my hair color kit.

Shingles? Yuck. Between your shingles and my high blood pressure (see my blog) we could have some serious fun... anyways, i found your post delightfully random and entertaining. As for shampoo- gotta go for the smell- or prettiest/cleverest packaging. Just depends on my mood.

I totally fall for marketing and believe all those ads, but I also am sensitive to smells, so I have to be careful about shampoo. Mostly I just use John Frieda's Brilliant Brunette or Pantene. I used to use Halsa with a Chamomile smell which I loved, and Frieda's is the closest I've come to finding that. I do think it brings out my natural highlights!
I hope your shingles are healed by this weekend!!!

I am completely swayed by coupons and what's on sale. I buy what is free or very cheap and my hair doesn't seem to notice. (I've tried the expensive stuff and my hair didn't notice either.) From there, I go with the scent. I usually like something coco-nutty or tropical. But I'm not too particular as long as it's not green apple.
Sorry about the shingles. I hope you are better soon!

I wanted to stop by and see what everyone else said about shampoo. The shampoo that I love best of all is from Arbonne, but it's kind of pricey so I don't get it often. I'm usually just buying something relatively inexpensive that smells good. Some shampoos are really harsh on my hair and make it very brittle. The Wal-Mart version of Pantene is pretty good as is the Suave Salon version of Biolage.
I got some Bain de Terre when I got my hair cut the last time and it has been really good. It's given my hair a lot of body.
Oh! Changing topics - my 12 year old got a hole-in-one for the first time on Wii golf. There was much hooping and hollering here. I'm surprised you didn't hear it all the way in TX.

Totally sympathise on the brother front - oppisite for me though. Four little brothers and me!
Shampoo - anything that actually works at taming my naturally curly mass of hair into something other than FRIZZ!!!
Big (((HUGS))) as you are missing Dozer! God is soooo good to keep dropping surprises in your lap like that peacock! (do peacocks often run wild in Texas???)
I love your random thingy, but don't have time to do it right now. I'll let you know if I come back to it. Praying for you my friend!
