Howdy from Cal-i-forn-i-a

Posted in Kids-Family-Funnies-Etc

I'm in northern California visiting my baby sister Debbie (aka Bobo) and her hubsy-wubsy Aubrey.  They are a tres cute couple.

Today was our first full day here.  Although the temp was in the 90s, it was still gorgeous outside!  Our exciting day started off with a visit to the Jelly Belly Factory.

They had a pretty neat-o tour and gave away lots of free samples.  While the boys were impressed with the soda flavors of jelly beans, I was rather engrossed with the nasty flavors of jelly beans-- the likes of skunk, toothpaste, and dirt.  I even thought that the Rotten Egg flavored jelly beans weren't too bad.  My little sis, however, almost puked it out.  Sounds gross, doesn't it?  But not as gross as Vomit flavored jelly beans!

We then made a quick stop at the Golden Gate Bridge...

...before we arrived at Muir Woods.

Even though I had these on my feet...

Boy did I feel silly clomping through the forest in these shoes!  It made me feel like the girl that would show up to a pool party wearing makeup, giant hair and lots of jewelry.  Silly and high maintenance.

The slightly sore feet and high-maintenance image were worth it though!

We leave on Thursday.  I have a feeling it's going to get here all too soon!

*The reason I'm wearing those ridiculous-for-the-woods shoes is that it was a very last minute trip and there was no time to go back to the house to put on sensible tennis shoes.  Just for the record and all...

hey...is that David actually smiling in a picture? Or did you do some nifty photo shop kind thing? :-)

My Dad sent us a video tour of the Jelly Belly factory and the kids used to watch it over and over. Funny stuff.

I love the woodsy pictures. Those woods contain my favorite smells of all times. I grew up camping in those woods. My Aunt and Grandpa were park rangers and we used to spend our summers there. So many fun memories.

I will pray that today goes very slow!

You've been quite the traveling young lady! ;D

I had to chuckle at the shoe picture. Hey! At least you looked fabulous, right?

Do they really have a vomit flavored jelly beans?

It was so nice to meet you at the convention.

Maybe next year you can bring your flute and I'll work on one of my fly girl dance routines - we could host a session. *cough*

They actually have those flavors of jellybeans. I thought that was a Harry Potter thing.

You and your sister look like twins, especially in that last picture.

Have fun!

Enjoy your time in CA. Looks like major fun!

I would probably have worn some shoes similar to that too... I take three mile walks in flip flops and play hard frisbee in 3in heeled flip flops and a skirt! LOL!

Have a great time!

Apr. 24, 2009 - girly shoes and white skin

Posted by Jimmie

Your fancy hiking shoes cracked me up. We see ladies here all the time in high heel, strappy shoes walking at parks and climbing mountains. I can't even walk on the city streets in a shoe without a back! How they manage is beyond me. I'm always wearing (comparatively) ugly sneakers or Chacos -- something sturdy and practical.

Yes, white skin is valued here. It's strange to me. I see these super pale women who really and truly look ill. They really need to get in the sun!! When people comment about me and my daughter, the number one thing they say (after the must-say-outloud-despite-its-being-very-obvious "FOREIGNER!") is "such white skin!" They will say, "You are so beautiful. Your skin is white." It doesn't matter what your features look like. If your skin is white, that's automatically beautiful. So being told you're beautiful here is a different compliment. LOL

Yes, I have the worst time finding any kind of facial lotion or cleanser that is NOT whitening. Like it matters! It surely doesn't WORK. But just for the principle of the thing, I try not to buy it. I try to encourage women in China that they are beautiful the way God made them -- "yellow" skin and all. There is no reason to change that.

Hi there! I love visiting San Fran - we have been there twice and just had a blast both times. I can't wait to take our boys out there someday...
I'm so thrilled to see that smile on David's face.
Your shoes are fabo....however, you had to be dying on those trails. Didn't you think it was amazing how due to the fact that the canopy is so thick in Muir Woods there aren't any insects..and thus no birds?
Hope the rest of the trip was wonderful...and love the picture of you and BOBO. ;-) I love JELLY BELLY'S TOO...and still have yet to do that tour....next time....the kids will be my excuse.
