My "Debonaire" Dad!

Posted in Kids-Family-Funnies-Etc

My dad sent this picture to me tonight.

And if that thin young man with shades and a motor scooter wasn't enough, he wrote this on the back of the photo:

"In case you don't recognize this handsome, debonaire, playboy.  It's me.  Show this to Dan & all pretty girls."

I admit it... I totally busted a gut when I read the back of this picture-- especially the part about showing it to all pretty girls!  Oh my oh my oh my!   How funny is that?!

This is completely opposite of what I know my dad to be like. Not that he isn't handsome or anything... he's just a rather quiet, devoted man that has been married to my mom for over 3 decades.  So it's hard to see him as a "debonaire playboy".   It does make me think that I need to ask my dad a few more questions about his childhood and young adult life.  Maybe even bring out the old voice recorder.

Are y'all surprised by old pictures of your parents or how they used to be back in the day?

This also makes me wonder what my boys are going to think about David and I when we were younger.  Or even if they were to look back to how we are right now... would anything be surprising to them?  Would we seem like normal parents or like old fogey's?  Maybe I should ask them when they wake up in the morning.  Or maybe I just don't want to know.

Remember that letter he wrote to G-Ma when he was living in England where he talked about "some band called the Beatles" that all the girls were going nuts for? I would definitely want to know more about his and mom's young adult life...the things we just don't think to think about, you know? :)
Love you!

He was a dapper young man wasn't he? :P Playboy... pshhhh. Aaaaaactually, SOME of the stories I've heard are rather interesting. :) Marshy~ I'm sure your boys are going to think "wow, daddy had hair back then....and look how skinny he was". Whereas, we thought, "wow... who's the skinny dude going bald?" LOL. We love David. YOU on the other hand have hardly changed in the last 13 years. 13 right?

Oh my gosh, it's so great that he sent you that pic. He looks like a James Dean type guy in that pic! I love what he wrote on the back though. HAHA.

Love, Love, Love it! I have one very similar of my dad in front of his motor bike over in Japan; I am always suprised, looking back, what a sharp dresser he was.

I also have a couple great shots of his mom, smoke and drink in hand, sitting on the hood of a car-hair blowing in the window. Grandma!? What?

So much fun. I want to enlarge some of the good ones and hang them some where. Much too fun to hide away.

Jun. 17, 2009 - Your dad is a looker, girl! :)

Oh girlfriend, have I got pics of my spunky grandma. In fact, I did break out the old recorder one day and had her tell me all of her old stories and we even broke out the photos so she could tell me specifics about them. That is when I found out what a hussy she was. (I say that with all due respect :)

You see, my grandma was dating military man A and sent him a nice full body shot in her swimsuit which, although it was a one piece, was considered to be racy back then. So then, my grandpa whom we'll call military man B, saw her photo hanging on military man A's wall. He liked what he saw and so he found her address on an envelope tacked up next to the picture and he started writing her! So that is how she got together with my grandpa but that isn't the kicker part of the story.

After my grandma told us this my sister asks her: so grandma, who took this picture anyway? And she looked at us with a sheepish grin and says, "well my other boyfriend did!"

Grandma!

Now I have to find that picture and blog this story. That woman is something.

Hi Marsha;

Your dad is so cute. And what a funny sense of humor ;-) Glad he gave you a good laugh and let you see a through a small window, a glimpse at his younger days.

What a fun photo! (I found an old one of my mom water-skiing once. I never in a million years would have pictured her doing that - LOL. And...come to find out my MOM had a motorcycle, too!) :-O
Makes you wish you could meet them...'back in the day.'

Blessings,
Michelle

LOL - Love that picture, Marsha! It's rather shocking to see our parents when they are young and carefree, isn't it? I know there are pictures of my parents and I know it's them, but they seem so foreign! Like a shadow of who I really know. I'm not making sense, but I'm sure you know what I mean.

I read through several posts of your blog - I've been so busy I haven't been by in quite awhile. I just wanted you to know that I think of you and pray for you all the time. You're never far from my thoughts or my heart.

Take care and God bless you - Julie
