Starting 1st Grade

Posted in Curriculum

On Monday, my dd will be starting 1st grade. We will only be doing a few subjects the first week, and then add our "full load" the following Monday.

Last year, for kindergarten, we used a more theme study approach. You can visit our kindergarten blog at www.alexml.blogspot.com

This year, we will be doing a more classical approach. I decided to look into classical education after reading The Well Trained Mind in July. I am currently reading Latin Centered Curriculum, and am continuing to define our educational philosophy.

Here is a listing of our main curriculum:

  • Christian Studies - we'll be attending Bible Study Fellowship (BSF) which is studying Romans this year
  • Arithmetic - RightStart Level C - I think this is a wonderful program - we've already worked for Level A & B
  • Latin - Prima Latina
  • Phonics/Spelling - Saxon Phonics 2 - I am very impressed with this program, but this will be our 1st time using it
  • Writing - copywork, dication, recitation (Linguistic Development through Poetry Memorization by Pudewa)
  • Classical Studies - SOTW 1 with workbook
  • Modern Studies - TruthQuest American History for Young Students - we will work through this as bedtime reading
  • Music - piano with Music for Little Mozarts
  • Science - unsure at this point - we will be attending a monthly Nature Day with a Charlotte Mason group - we will also attend a monthly class at our local Natural History museum - we might continue with Apologia science, Sonlight K science, and/or some themed studies with handsofachild.com
