I went to Wal-Mart after church this afternoon and I was determined to share my faith with someone before I left. It took a while to work up the nerve and every person who walked past seemed like a missed opportunity. I kept thinking about all those people who might be going to an eternity in hell.
Then I finally was able to get up the nerve. I had a tract in my hand and I walked up to an older lady, handed it to her and asked, "Did you get one of these?" She said, "Um, no" Then I asked her, "Can I ask you an interesting question?"
"Sure"
"If you died today, would you go to heaven or hell?"
"Oh, I am getting close that is for sure!"
Chuckle, "But which do you think?"
"Oh, heaven!"
"Why do you think that is?"
"Because I am a good person."
"Did you realize that God's standard is WAY higher than ours?"
"No, I didn't know that!"
I walked her through some of the 10 commandments and asked if she had ever lied, stolen, etc. She only admitted to having stolen when she was younger. So I told her that the Bible says if we break even one of the commandments that means that we have broken the whole law.
She said, "Oh, no! And I have been trying so hard!"
I shared with her that if we break even one of God's commands then He can't let us into heaven. I related it back to our justice system and asked her if this bothered her that her sin will keep her out of heaven. She said, "Yes, it does." So I shared the gospel with her.
She ended up telling me, "But I still think I am going to heaven" This is when I feel I could have done better, (well, I could have done better thru the whole thing!) but I am learning, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does the heart work.
I told her, the Holy Spirit will talk to you about this and encouraged her to read the tract. She thanked me before we went our separate directions.
