English Curriculum
Posted in Homeschool as usual
I hate teaching English!!! I always find English curriculum extremely dry and boring. I know it's a necessary evil, but that doesn't mean I have to like it!!! I figured next year I would use the Scott Foreman program with Little One that is on the net for free, but I was stumped as to what to get Prince Caspian as he will be in the 7th grade and the Scott Foreman curriculum only goes up to 6th. I knew I would be using my Story Starters book for writing with him, but I still wanted to cover some basic grammar with him. My idea of a dream curriculum (which I never imagined in my wildest dreams thought I would find) is one that is interesting, the student can do most of the work themselves without a lot of adult intervention, one that does not have a lengthy teacher's manual that I have to follow and of course does not cost a lot of money. Like I said I never expected to find it!!! Well, I may have...
I was looking through my new TOS magazine and there was an ad for a Language Arts curriculum that claimed to be Charlotte Mason style of learning and only cost $19.95. So I went to their website, hoping they would have examples because I almost never buy anything sight unseen and I especially would not by a language arts curriculum that I know next to nothing about without seeing a sample. Well, I was in luck, they did have a pdf sample of every level they offer. I LOVED IT!!!! Now, keep in mind I have not ordered this yet. I have only seen the samples, but this is the first time I have EVER been excited about language arts. Since it's new and many of you probably have never heard of it, I thought I would get the word out. The program is called Language Lessons. Here are some things that it includes:
Picture Study
Diction
Narration
Copywork
Grammar
Poetry Reading
Creative Writing
The lessons are real short and they look interesting. I don't think it will be overwelming at all. I saw an example of the picture studies and they especially looked fun. In fact, I'm so excited over it, I plan to order it for both my children! Here's the website: www.queenhomeschool.com and look for Language Lessons.

I really love Queen Homeschool books too. I am making a list for next year. I did not see your gem yet. I am happy with Learning Language Arts Through Literature for Grace. It suits her to a tee. But I am not sure about Ryan. Thanks for this idea to check into.

Thanks so much, Lynn! This looks great. I've been looking for something, too (and I love language arts, but my boys don't!), and this looks like it would work for us. I, too, love the short lesson plans.
I checked, and they're going to be at our conference this year, but I don't think I want to wait that long!
Thanks again!

I'm very strongly considering this. I've looked at so many different things for English, and keep ending up frustrated with the options.
I majored in English intending to teach highschool lit and grammar, so I'm probably way too opinionated about what I want. *laugh*
This looks great though... I'm somewhere between Charlotte Mason and Classical in my electic style of schooling, and so this might just fit. I've been wanting something between First Language Lessons for the Well Trained Mind Level 3 and Simply Grammar.
Is this it? Is it? Oh, I hope so!
Thanks for blogging about it. Perhaps you've linked me to that lost treasure I've been seeking!

I too have struggled to find the right English curriculum. It's probably the only subject I haven't been satisfied with much at all. We've been doing Shurley English this last year, but it's a bit much. My daughter keeps asking why the teacher book is 3x bigger than hers. I went the the website to look at the curriculum you had looked at - it does look very promising. Thanks for the info.
