Tightwad Tuesday- Price Book

For more Tightwad Tuesday ideas, go to Mary's blog.

I've heard about this idea off and on for years, but never attempted it for myself.  I think it is time to try it.  Many shoppers who really want to save money keep a Price Book.  This book is a place to write down the prices of the products you use at each store you shop at.  That way, not only do you have a list of the best place to get the item, but you also have on hands a guide to show you if a sale is REALLY good or not.  Just be careful, store don't like seeing people going up and down their aisles writing down prices.  I will probably save my receipts for a few weeks and get the prices off of there first so I don't attract a lot of attention!!! Here is an article about Price Books and how to put one together:

May. 20, 2008 - Great tip~

I often meet people who "believe" certain stores are cheaper than others. It is hard to be certain without a price book. Thanks for the link.

Wow there is a book out there for this?! We started doing this this past year as we are now on a fixed income and every penny counts. We list all the items we usually buy by isle in the store and the usual cost. Given the fuel prices we have notices a huge price change in the basics like flour, milk, eggs, and sugar. So lots of places are advertizing sales but in reality the price is actually much higher than normal. It takes some work to do this but it is worth it. Great tip!!!!

I went to 4 stores several years ago with a "price" list book in my hand. I didn't care what they thought of it!
Anyway, I quickly discovered that I had been shopping at the most expensive store in town! Now I only go there for the meat that is on sale.

Lynn, you are so right about the pricebook. I have been keeping a record of comparision prices and you would be shocked in the difference between stores. I have compared for so long that even my eleven year old son does it. We went in a store recently and he said, "Orange juice has gone up eleven cents since last week." :)

May. 20, 2008 - Online flyers

Another place to get prices for your price book is to see if your local stores have their sales flyers available online. Kroger and Meijer do, as well as Sam's Club. I can do most of my planning before I hit the stores. I have also used my receipts to create a price book- you save time keeping track of what you actually buy instead of dreaming that one day you really will try a recipe using capers. :p

We have been talking about this for a loooong time. My hubby is my grocery shopper and I rely on him for this. He is a good shopper . ( PTL )

Other than the receipt you can also begin filling your price book by writing in all of the items that appear in your local fliers and the unit prices on them. That is one thing I have found helpful in finding out the average prices of things.

I pray all is going well with you my friend. ((HUGS))

Blessings and ((hugs)) my SSiC

Oh, I hadn't thought about keeping a price book. Usually, I try to keep it organized in my head. It's really worth it to go to different stores to get the best price.

It's my hubby's birthday today so we are off to dinner soon... but I wanted to let you know that I'm posting Weblink Wednesday early tonight for anyone who is interested in participating. I'm featuring a fellow blogging friend as my link choice this week! How fun!

I had a price book years ago, but haven't used one lately. Truly, I never thought of writing down prices while I was in the store, except for an item here or there. I always took it off of my receipt. Thanks for the reminder. :)

I have a pretty good memory, but having a price book would help with all the little things!
