Jan. 5, 2009~ New Law Could Affect Parents in the United States ~
A new law that is taking affect on February 10, 2009, could effect your budget in major ways. According to the Los Angeles Times, it could make it much harder to get used clothes for your children. Considering most homeschoolers live on a single income and very tight budgets, this may impact a lot of us. To find out more, read this article at thetightwad.today.com.
I read about that on the lounge, very sad indeed. I'd be interested in what a lawyer or someone who knows the law would say, does it affect mom & pop shops or garage sales, or just big stores. It will be interesting, thanks for the link.

That is so sad. I know it's good to be careful about what our kids are exposed to but I think it is going to cause a lot of businesses to buckle, especially the non profit ones and a lot of families depend on 2nd hand clothing :( I know we buy our fair share of it. I love being able to go in with 20 bucks and come out with armloads of stuff! There is a similar think happening right now in the handmade toys area where the mom and pop small home businesses have to have all of their products tested for safety at a very high cost and there are a lot of them that can't afford it and won't be selling anymore. It's sad because those are the people we should be supporting, the local people that hand carve wooden toys or create play furniture and so on.

Oh, thank goodness! Our wonderful government is here to help us! Don't worry everyone, our all caring government will set up a new program to give us clothes...FREE!!!!!!! Of course, we will have to wear what they send, but so what if they are trampy? I mean they are free and show how much the governement cares!!!!
Ok, sorry. Couldn't help myself.
I see many ways around this. First, the law only says these shops can not SELL the clothes. Thrift stores can give them away & accept donations in general. This is a way around the law. Second, generally speaking these laws do not apply to private sales like yard sales.
I find myself wondering what will be left in the second hand shops. Around here, they will no longer take used toys and used baby furniture. It may sound like far-fetched conspiracy theorist attitude, but this seems like a convenient way to make us buy new stuff. I question how it would be possible to reinforce such a plan.
BTW, Happy New Year! I hope you had a wonderful Christmas!
Peace and Laughter,
Cristina
