For the Sake of the Call
Feb. 4, 2008 - Eli's Time to Shine |
If anyone is wondering how the New York Giants were able to upset the undefeated New England Patriots, I've got your answer.

In honor of the occassion, my father pulled out this vintage 1986 Giants World Champion sweater. Looks like something from the eighties, doesn't it? Being collectors, there's hardly anything that we ever owned that my parent's don't still possess somewhere in their house. This gem was on the bottom of a pile of clothes in my parents' bedroom. And you must agree that it's priceless! Did I mention it's a sweater? I wish I could still fit into a sweater I owned in 1986 (I was 11), don't you? :)
Although it would have been fabulous if our Colts could have made it to the Superbowl again (can you imagine (Manning v. Manning on Superbowl Sunday); and though we would have cheered our hearts out for Brett Favre (Go, Pack!), we're thrilled for Peyton's little brother. We didn't have quite as much fun this year as we did at last year's party, but we still had a great time shouting, "Boo, Patriots!" and I was on the edge of my seat with flushed cheeks and a knot in my stomach until Eli through that pass to Plaxico, and then I jumped up and down and screamed as if it had been Reggie Wayne in the endzone. :) And did you see the pride in Peyton's eyes for his little brother? Pardon me, I'm verklempt.
It was a great game, and a wonderful time with family. I'm sure the Mannings are celebrating now! Congrats, Giants! Congrats, Eli! It was your turn to shine, and shine you did! Back to back brothers as Superbowl MVPs....very cool! |

Feb. 1, 2008 - Rude Awakening |
I couldn't sleep at all last night (do do do do do)
It's not unusual for at least one of my four lovely children to crawl into bed with me at some point every night. Mommy, I'm cold. Mommy, I had a bad dream. Mommy, I'm wet.... Usually, it's one of the younger two, but if they miraculously sleep through the night, one of the older two is sure to get paged to take their place in mommy's nice warm bed. I'm convinced they have a system. I can picture the clandestine meetings, 4dd5 says to 2dd8 "I'm really tired! I need a good night of uninterupted sleep; it's your turn to wake mommy up in the middle of the night!"
Most nights, I am only awaken once, but last night was an unusual exception. Sometime between 12:30am (when I fell asleep) and 1:30am, 3dd6 climbed into bed with me. I was so tired, that I didn't notice her presence for a little while. Then she probably kicked me or smacked me in the face, because I woke up and could no longer sleep while she remained with me. So I carried her lanky body back into her own bed, tucked her in, kissed her sweetly, and collapsed into the warmth of my own bed once again. It didn't last long. She's fighting a cold, and her inability to breathe easily woke her again, and I found her mostly asleep; crying in the bathroom, around 3am. She thought she was going to throw up so I got her a basin, I gave her a drink of water (knowing she needed some hot tea, but far too tired to make some), took her back to her bed, tucked her in, prayed over her, and comforted her. (Fortunately, the basin was unnecessary, and she made it through the night with no vomitting!) Meanwhile, her roomate (4dd5), awoke and claimed to be thirsty, so I got another drink of water for her, tucked her in again, kissed her again, and returned to my not so warm and cozy bed. I dozed a bit, but not much later, I was awoken again to the sound of talking and giggling, intermingled with coughing. I was so tired that I tried to ignore it and dozed off and on for about an hour. At 5am, I finally got up to investigate. I discovered that 4dd5 had gone down the hall and climbed into bed with 2dd8 (right next door to my bedroom). All I can think of at this point is how tired I am, and how grumpy they'll be come afternoon. None too graciously, I order the younger to her own bed, where I gruffly tuck her in, and she loudly complains of the cold, and I insist through clenched teeth and with words like my grandfather would have spoken, that she better not cry and wake up her sick sister. I return to my own bed where I struggle with insomnia, only to fall asleep about the time I hear dh get up. Soon after I'm joined by 3dd6 again, but I don't mind, because she can sleep on dh's side of the bed.
All is well until I am rudely awakened by the sound of thumping under my bed. It doesn't take me long to discover that the puppy (who isn't supposed to venture upstairs) is chasing the kitten around under the bed. So I start shouting, "Lainey out!" and beating the sides of the bed. 1ds10, who is supposed to be watching the puppy, hears the commotion and runs upstairs, to discover that the puppy and kitten are actually INSIDE the boxspring, chasing eachother. We get the kitten out within minutes, but no amount of yelling, threatening, or beating the sides of the boxspring will cajole the puppy to obedience. We finally just wait until she comes close enough so I can grab her (none to lovingly), and pull her out. I look at the clock and it's almost 8:30am. It's past time to be up, my heart is pounding, my temper is raging, adrenaline is surging through my veins, but I'm still exhausted!
So what would you do in such a situation?
- Get up, take a shower, and begin the day
- Crawl back in bed and attempt to go back to sleep
- Skip the shower, remain in your pjs, and go make a cup of coffee
- Pull out your Bible and prayer journal
- Get up and blog about it
What do you think I did?

Jan. 29, 2008 - What Do You Do About Downtime? |
I have a habit of posting my own blogs in my fellow blogger's comments. Personally, I love lengthy comments, but then I see so many people apologizing for leaving such a lengthy comment, and I wonder if other people mind my own lengthy comments. Plus, my habit of leaving long comments in response to other people's posts often leaves me with little time to write a post of my own. So today as a comment of mine was growing and growing, I decided to make it a post of my own and link to it in the comments. :)
ConservaChick wants to know: What do you do about downtime? You know, that time after the school and "kid" chores are done, and before the afternoon activities start (between 11:30 and 3:30)....what do you do to keep your kids constructively busy. Whether it be during your homeschool day, or the summer months.
Well, we're never done by 11:30am! But that's not what you asked...;)
First of all, I read aloud to them for at least an hour a day. We have history reading, missionary story reading, and fun reading. While I'm reading, they sometimes play with quiet toys (legos), but only if they don't become a distraction. Presently, we're reading The Princess and the Goblin by George MacDonald, George Washington: Man of Prayer and Courage (Sower Series), and we just finished the Lamplighter book Little Sir Galahad. We'll probably start one of the Trailblazer books next. We also have a stack of picture books from the library that I read to my pre-readers. Everyone else has their own books to read, so that's always an option. Read!
Beyond that, they play. They
- play house
- have tea parties (with accents)
- put on shows
- take shoe boxes and design and build massive doll house structures with them,
- dress up and talk to eachother with British accents and scold their children,
- listen to CDs and make up their own dance routines,
- play with dolls, Barbies, horses, doll house, Strawberry Shortcake, My Little Pony, and Only Hearts Club dolls
- build with K'Nex, Lincoln Logs, and legos
- build massive train tracks and play with trains
- rearrange the couch pillows into separate "rooms" and play housekeeper & master (again with the accents)
- carry the kitten around and play with him
- play games
- play the piano
- work on the computer with Mavis Beacon teaches typing
- and...
and whenever they can, they go outside and play. They
- ride bikes,
- ride scooters,
- pretend to go camping,
- dress up and play Little House on the Prairie,
- play with dollhouses,
- play tag,
- play soccer,
- give the Barbies baths,
- run around with the puppy,
- jump on the trampoline,
- and...
I'm not very creative myself, and I don't initiate any of this. I really don't play with them myself either. The only thing I do is say, "No, you don't need to watch TV or play on the computer. Go play!" They figure it out. They've had years of figuring it out, and they also have inspiration from the books I've read to them, or they've read themselves. If they don't want to play, they can read, or color, or make up their own crafts, or write letters to friends. We also have lots of board games. Lots! But that's another post in and of itself.
We've been completely off any type of a schedule for months, so this play usually happens in the morning, and then we get started with school and work through the afternoon. It's not ideal, but it works out okay in the winter because it's so cold, but we need to get back on track and start lessons earlier because they'll want to be outside more in the afternoons in the spring. They're not too happy about doing Math when the school kids get home from school!
Just like any kids, my kids can get sucked into the TV very easily, so we don't turn it on. If we do, they whine and complain when I turn it off, but if I don't, they might ask to watch something, but rarely pitch a fit when I say, no. There was a span of time when I was pregnant/nursing, and they were younger, that I depended on the tv as a babysitter. We watched a lot of TV for a few years: Playhouse Disney, Dora, Blues' Clues, Veggie Tales. No longer! Now, they might watch it once a week, usually on weekends or during our home fellowship group. I've even recorded great shows like Drive Through History, on the DVR, and we haven't watched them, because we rarely turn the television on during the day anymore. There are plenty of other things to do. Also, we don't have Nintendo, or Playstation, or anything. We have friends who have it ALL, and when we're at their house, my son (and sometimes my husband) like to play. I'm content with that! :)
As a result, my kids are creative and rarely get bored. I'm sure if they did, I'd find something to do with them (like wipe down all the kitchen cabinets, or clean the baseboards). :)

Jan. 28, 2008 - Full Weekend: Derby & Tubing |
We had a full weekend and it pretty well wiped me out! We started out Saturday morning with the Pinewood Derby. My son is finishing up his Webelos requirements so that he can cross-over to Boy Scouts at the end of February, so this may be his last Pinewood Derby. It's funny to me how intense the boys (and more notably their dads) get about their cars. Pinewood Derby cars now, Indy Race cars later. With the top eight cars finishing within a tenth of a second from eachother, my son was a respectable 6th. I have to share our first pinewood derby racing experience. Our son was five or six years old, and in AWANA at the time, which hosted an annual Pine Wood Derby. The kids were required to turn their race cars in early for inspection. We were under the impression that the race would take place at the normal AWANA time, so I was surprised by a phone call from another homeschool mom the afternoon of the race, asking where we were, and informing me that we were missing the derby and that our son's car had won the whole thing without him. My husband and son raced to the church where they were gracious enough to allow ds to race his car once, and then give him his award. Oops! Sunday was an even busier day. After getting a phone call about 7pm Saturday night from our worship leader asking us to fill in for him because he was sick, we pulled together the best service that we could and led worship Sunday morning. God blessed our efforts. It's always cool when He does. Then after church, we went snow tubing with a bunch of youth group kids and some other families. It was my brother's birthday, and we invited him to join us. It was only my second time tubing, and the kids had never been before. We had a lot of fun, and got back way too late, and headed straight to my sister's house to meet her and her husband and my parents for a party for my brother. I lost count of the number of times dh said, "We're crazy!" as we drove to my sister's house with tired, cranky, kids, and a hyper puppy, all the while completely exhausted ourselves.
dh and my little brother (he's ten years younger than I, the only boy after 4 girls) This time I could not be accused of being grumpy, but my littlest one could! She had the biggest smiles coming down the hill, and then this face the rest of the time. She was so tired! 3dd6 had a great time being pulled around on her tube. 2dd8 had a great time palling around with this cutie from church! and her beautiful little sister. They belong to these friends of ours. A rare smile from 4dd5 |

Jan. 16, 2008 - Welcome Friends! 2007 Highlights Slideshow |
This is a sticky note which will remain at the top for a few days. Scroll down for new entries.
To those of you who have just received our Christmas letter, and are visiting my blog for the first time as a result, Welcome! I've put together a quick slideshow of 2007 highlights; if you'd like to see what else we've been up to this year, you can click on the Categories (to the right) Family Life and Out & About for pictures and stories of many of our adventures (or click on either of those highlighted pink links) or search through my Archives . For security, I do not use the names of the kids in any posts. Rather, I refer to them by their birth order (1, 2, 3, 4,) gender (ds= dear son, dd= dear daughter), and age (10, 8, 6, & 4). It can be confusing and akward, but it's a crazy world we live in these days.
I'd love to know you stopped by, so please leave a comment. Enjoy your visit.
Grace and Peace,
Angel

Jan. 3, 2008 - Sour What? |
This evening was my first attempt at a Pennsylvania Dutch New Years' culinary tradition: Pork and Sauerkraut. My husband's family is all PA Dutch (Deutsch=German), and I've acquired a taste for this dish over the years. I was doubtful that the kids would appreciate it; nonetheless, each child was required to eat a small "no thank you portion." After a couple of bites, 4dd4 announced quite emphatically, "I am NOT going to eat another bite of Pork and Sour Crap! I am never going to eat Pork and Sour Crap again in my life!" She'd been refering to it as Sour Crap repeatedly throughout the meal, and persisted in doing so even after correction. It wasn't intentional. I don't think she really knows what crap is, and it's a word that's used in our home only occassionaly; she truly couldn't pronounce kraut. Regardless, each time she said Sour Crap it became more difficult to keep a straight face. (And I really didn't want to encourage her by laughing! All I need is for Sour Crap to be added to the kids vernacular!)
Later, after the incentive of Chocolate Chocolate Chip Banana Bread was offered for those who finished their dinner, she came running into the kitchen gleefully announcing, "I've finished my dinner! I ate up all my Sour Crap! I LOVE Sour Crap now! I love it even more than PIZZA!!!" "Really? More than pizza?!?!" I questioned. "Yes," she responded with that certain lilt in her voice which means, I know it's hard to believe, but it's TRUE! You have no idea how it warms my heart to hear that my daughter has now acquired a taste for Sour Crap! What about you? Are you fond of Sour Crap? We've got plenty! Come on over! |

Dec. 30, 2007 - The Christmas Rundown |
Pardon my silence, but I've been too busy enjoying life to blog about it. My middle sister was in town for 9 days from South Dakota. While she was with us, my house was a revolving door, with my parents, brother, other sister and brother-in-law all dropping in to visit. Then, my husband's brother and his wife were in town too, visiting her family, so they dropped by for an afternoon. Besides training the puppy, I've been keeping the food flowing: a big pot of soup, chili & cornbread, cheese and crackers... feeding a dozen plus people is a busy job. My husband was fortunate to be able to take the week off work, so while we spent a lot of time laying around and playing games, we also got out quite a bit with a trip to the zoo, and ice skating. We spent Christmas Eve at my next younger sister's church, Christmas morning at our house, and then went back to my sister & brother-in-law's house for Christmas dinner & presents with my family that afternoon. We stayed there too late watching The Bishop's Wife (Cary Grant) and It's A Wonderful Life. Fun times! The day after, my middle sister, dad, and husband blessed me with an almost empty house so that I could catch up on laundry and after-Christmas cleaning while they took a trip to the Children's Museum with the kids. Tomorrow night we're hosting our family New Year's Eve party, and then I think I'll be partied and hostessed out for a few weeks at least, or until the Colt's playoff game. :) Overall, we've had a great Christmas, and I'm sad to see it end! It was really hard to say goodbye to my sister yesterday! Unfortunately, my youngest daughter has had a fever since yesterday, so I missed church to stay home with her. I can hear somebody coughing now. I've had an irritating cough that has lingered for a week or so myself. Otherwise, we're all doing well. Oh, except the kitten who I had to take to the vet. How I managed to make it through an entire year with 4 kids without having to take them to the doctor once, only to end up at the vet with a dehydrated kitten who has a fever, I can't figure out! The vet couldn't really figure out what was wrong with him, but he's been rehydrated and is on anti-biotics now. I'm shaking my head!
The kids have had a wonderful time with family, and we're all getting used to having the puppy around and remembering to watch her. Not exactly easy, but fun. I will say, it's tough to watch the puppy while sitting in front of the computer screen, so I haven't been reading very many of your blogs the past couple of weeks. I did manage to type up my Christmas letter this afternoon, so hopefully I can get that in the mail this week. That's quite an accomplishment considering I didn't get it out until just before Valentine's Day last year!
So that's what we've been up to around here. We'll see if I'm able to carve out some time to post pictures. There's one experience that I just have to blog about, and I have some overdue blog business to take care of too. But don't hold your breath! I still have things that I wanted to blog about back in July that I never did. Pity! So, since I haven't had a chance to make the rounds and find out how fabulous all of your Christmases were, would you be so kind as to fill me in? What kind of special things have you been up to the past couple of weeks? I really do miss you all and look forward to catching up with you!
Grace and Peace,

Dec. 22, 2007 - It's a girl! Merry Christmas! |

One of my favorite people in the world used to have an e-mail address Room for a dog. After her fifth child, she finally got one, and people probably thought she was crazy. With four kids and a kitten, I'm questioning my own sanity today!
I've always had this romantic notion that little boys need puppies and little girls need kittens. For years, dh (the dog lover) said, "No!" The house was too small, the yard was too small, we were still potty training kids, we just moved here...with all the practical reasons why we shouldn't get a dog, "Not right now," began to sound like, "Not ever." But when we heard of free puppies, from champion pedigree lines, and parents with perfect dispositions, "maybe someday" became today! Although, I've scoffed at the idea of a "Christmas puppy" in the past, I now have one. 2am potty breaks in the frigid wind, here I come! :)

Already, our new baby is a joy, and everyone is very excited! I'm especially excited, and I've never been much of a dog person myself!
Our new pup is a Golden Labradoodle/Black Lab mix, and for now, her name seems to be Lainey. We'll see if that sticks. At the moment, she certainly appears to be a "bright shining light" to our home! And you can always call her Elaine if you can't find another E kid around. :)
Other contenders are Nora (Eleanor) or Maybelline (on account of her white eyeliner and painted toes). What do you think?
Oh, and if you happen to be in the market for a really sweet, adorable, free Christmas puppy yourself and live anywhere close to Morristown, Indiana. Let me know, there's more where this one came from. :)
Poor Spunky has no idea what has just happened!

Dec. 6, 2007 - Shoes |

Looks like Baby Jesus needs a bath. He must have been posted as sentry.

Thanks to Melissa for the book recommendation! I apologize for the poor quality photos. Not only does my battery die after taking 10 pictures (it's down from 12), but the quality is questionable as well.

We're already enjoying this CD! It's fabulous!

Poor, youngest daughter. She hasn't gotten a shiny new pair of Sunday School shoes recently. :(
Someday she'll see this picture and point out how deprived she was being the youngest! (Right!)

These CDs weren't there when I went to bed! Just candy and Clementines. Aparently, a little 6 year old St. Nicholas decided it wasn't fair that Mommy and Daddy didn't have a present too, so she chose these from our existing musical selection. Brenda Lee anyone? :)
Happy St. Nicholas' Day!
Love,
Angel |

Dec. 5, 2007 - Winter Wonderland |

The house is filled with the tantalizing aromas of hot chocolate and tomato soup.
No bread in the house means that cheese quesadillas will replace the standard fare of grilled cheese sandwiches.
Streams of the Beach Boys harmonizing to Star of Wonder, Star of Light and Frosty the Snowman are audible throughout.
And while I enjoy the warmth of the indoors, my children are frolicking outside on this blustery snow-day.
Mean Mommy that I am, I shooed the kids back to bed when they awoke before 6 AM and announced the arrival of snow.
Now, while their classroom counterparts are struggling to focus on their studies as they gaze longingly at the snow outside their windows, my children are fully enjoying the excitement and magic of the first snowfall of the season.
This mother's heart rejoices to see her children enjoying the beauty of God's creation.
And if snow were not exciting enough, we are eagerly anticipating a playdate with honeybee this afternoon!
What a perfect day!

Throwing snowballs at me as I stand securely on the other side of the door. (the warm side)

Spunky wonders what those crazy kids are up to. (I'm sure he's glad to be on the warm side too!) |

Nov. 29, 2007 - Happy Belated Birthday! |
Happy Belated Birthday to me,
I turned thirty-three,
my husband baked me a cheesecake,
Thou shalt not envy!

We celebrated my birthday in Pennsylvania last Saturday with a delicious cheesecake my husband tried to surprise me with which he made while watching the kids when the mommies were all out braving the Black Friday crowds! What a guy! My mother-in-law made lasagna for lunch too! Delish!
Unfortunately, my camera battery is on the fritz and will only allow us to take a dozen pictures before it has to be charged again. Right after taking this picture, the all too familiar message, "Warning Battery Exhausted" appeared on the screen, so the gorgeous pictures of moi are on someone else's camera. Pity! Anyway, I just wanted to brag on my husband and let the entire blogosphere know how blessed I am to be married to this fabulous and godly man (who is turning out to be a great chef as well!). Thanks, sweetie! |

Oct. 27, 2007 - Date Night with 2dd8 |
On our son's 7th birthday, dh and I took him on a date to the Michael W. Smith/Mercy Me/David Crowder Band One Nation concert. It was a rare treat; the first time in a long time that the two of us had been alone with just him. We thought it would make a fun tradition, but our eldest daughter's 7th and 8th birthdays came and went with no concert date night or any other date night with Mommy and Daddy. So, when dh got concert tickets for his birthday, we decided it was a good chance to take her on her own date night.
Although the calendar read October, it felt more like August, and I'm far to stubborn to turn on the air conditioner in October; hence, this sweaty picture.

We went to see Steven Curtis Chapman performing at Anderson University. Steven Curtis Chapman is an Anderson alumni, and it is was there that he met his wife Mary Beth. The audience was full of personal friends and family. It was fun to hear him reminiscing about his college days. He was even more real and personal at this concert than at the other two we'd been fortunate to attend in prior years. Another special treat was to see him on stage with his two sons! One is a fabulous drummer; the other plays electric guitar and sings back-up. Steven was such a proud daddy, introducing his sons as band members; t'was enough to make this mommy verklempt. Of course there were many other moments where I became verklempt:
- as he sang the familiar words from I Will Be Here, reminding me of my husband's solo of the same at a dear friend's wedding last September
- as he shared testimonies of the adoption of three of his girls
- as video clips from other adoptive families and pictures of orphans around the world were shown
- as his wife Mary Beth joined him on stage for a special presentation from the President of the college
- as I sang along with him "you are covered with the fingertips of God," into my own sweet daughter's ears
- as he revealed the heart of a father debuting a poignant new song about making the most of every day we have with our children since they fly by so quickly and I joined him in singing, "I will dance with Cinderella..."
- as he presented a generous check to a local family in the process of adopting, a gift from the audience and an annonymous matching donor,
- and of course, as the words that resonate so deeply with my heart rang out so melodiously, "We will abandon it all For the Sake of the Call..."
Yes, it was a night filled with tears. Good tears. But it was also a delightful night with our eldest daughter. Dinner at Perkins was better than tea at the Ritz Carlton (I know because I've been there), and it was so wonderful to shower our sweet girl with our affection as we gave her our undivided attention. We also had fun taking pictures with Daddy's phone. :)

It's hard enough to get one-on-one time with your kids when you have more than one, but even more difficult is giving them time with both parents and no siblings. We've been able to pull it off twice now in the past 8 years. Each time has been priceless!

"I will dance with Cinderella
While she's here in my arms
'Cause I know something the prince never knew
Oh I will dance with Cinderella
I don't want to miss even one song
'Cause all too soon the clock will strike midnight
And she'll be gone."
Chorus: Cinderella, Steven Curtis Chapman- This Moment CD

Oct. 22, 2007 - A Perfect Weekend for Camping |
Anyone remember The Joys of Tent Camping in the Rain? It took us all summer to try again, and initial weather forcasts were predicting a similar weekend, but instead we were blessed with the most glorious fall weather and a fabulous time with friends and family! There were about 25 people in our group and the kids had a great time roaming from one campsite to another. They won't know what to do if we ever go camping by ourselves again! My favorite parts are the big Saturday night potluck and Sunday morning worship service. The autumnal sanctuary was ideal for worship!
Without further ado, here are a few pictures of our weekend at beautiful Mounds State Park in Anderson.
My brother always has been a monkey!

This picture simply does not do justice to the breathtaking view from our campsite!

It's unbelieveable how many pictures one must take to get all four children to look at the camera at the same time!

All they really wanted to do was play in the leaves!

And one more for good measure.

So here's the question for all you fellow campers: Do you mess with make-up when you're camping? |

Oct. 10, 2007 - Just when I thought I was done with 2am feedings... |
We're supposed to be at a field trip to the Apple Orchard this morning, but God had a little change of plans. Look what we're doing instead.
Spunky's first feeding (4dd4)
Punky's first feeding
Spunky (gray male?) & Punky (black female?)
Punky & 1ds10
So much for dh not wanting a kitten.
