Mar. 7, 2008 - bed?

umm, I should be in bed, but I wanted to enter an entry. lol. what's up?((the skyy)) what to write? hmm, I have taken a liking to Ancient Greece, it is neato. Kindof like Egypt, but different.  I just did an report/ essay. leave me comment on how I can improve. Hope u like it.

                   Athens vs. Sparta

In 600 B.C., Athens was a better place to live than Sparta. Athenians enjoyed art and beautiful architecture. They educated their children from the age of 7 and valued family life. Trade with other cultures was welcomed and helped to create an interesting and robust society. In contrast Spartans focused their entire culture on war. As a result the only people who would enjoy living there were men qualified to be a soldiers.

Art and architecture in Athens were very important parts of their culture. Beautiful buildings were common, as well as detailed temples for them to worship their gods at. Statues in temples were so detailed that they seemed lifelike. Poetry and plays were a way to relax and be entertained. Decorative clothing and household furnishings were also a pleasant addition of luxury. Beautiful and peaceful surroundings are desirable and important qualities for a city. Sparta on the other hand was completely opposite; they thought that all the luxuries were unnecessary. Spartan architecture was probably very nice, but uncelebrated. Spartans believed that instead of sending boys to school to learn poetry, they should learn how to go into battle and fight.

In Athens, trade and industry were very important parts of daily life. Athenians encouraged cultural trade and owned and managed a large trading center in the Mediterranean and were greatly influenced by it. Managing a large trade center gave citizens a great gain so that they could eat different food and wear new kinds of clothing. Getting news faster through other traders and sailors was another benefit. Sparta did not like to trade because they believed that they should not be influenced by other cultures and they did not want any distraction from war training.

Athens had the most powerful navy in all of Greece, and was quite famous for it. With Athens being located on the coast of Greece, a powerful navy was needed. War was not the main focus of Athens, unlike Sparta, and was dreaded when it was needed. Athens was a large city and could defend itself most of the time. The men were strong and were much more educated than their opponents. As an ancient city dweller, one would be concerned about being protected, and Athenians were not as burdened with that concern as other Greek towns, and this made Athens desirable. In contrast; Spartans loved war, and it was their main life focus. Spartan boys were expected to be strong and not to complain. This made Spartans fantastic fighters, and although many towns and cities tried to defeat her, the majority of them lost.

These are just a few reasons why Athens was better than Sparta, and why it was desirable. Athens might not have been the best fighter, but could outwit its opponent. They had beautiful art and architecture, amazing surroundings, and good education. Sparta was surrounded by dry, plain mountains and hills, which made the city very dreary. Furthermore, lack of cultural variety made Sparta a dull and unexciting city. In conclusion, Athens was a better place to live in 600 B.C. than Sparta.

Now it;s time for bed, why,i don't know, but "Obey your parents in the Lord for this is right" I don't know the location, but it is in the ten commandments.

Bye,

Ruthanne

Feb. 23, 2008 - Travel Journal

Hi guys, I wrote this a while ago, and thought that you might like to read it.

July 17, 1400 BC(morning)

Dear Journal,

I am in Memphis, leaving behind the gleaming white Pyramids of Giza and the great Sphinx. They are magnificent, as if Ra himself had put them there. I know what you are thinking, how could you have seen the Pyramids if you are in Memphis? Well, my captain needed to pick up some supplies in Giza, so I was able to wander for a few hours while he did so. When I came upon the wondrous pyramids, I just stood and gaped.

We are traveling against the current to Thebes. I really don’t know what to expect, as I have never been to Thebes before.

July 17, 1400 BC(afternoon)

Dear Journal,

We have set sail at last! Oh, how I love the breeze blowing in my face! Even though we are traveling against the current, we are making good time. We have to travel three hundred and seventy five miles, or 500 kilometers. We have just passed the city of Saqqara, where we were able to see the Step Pyramid of Djoser, from a distance. That was amazing, but not nearly as amazing as the ones in Giza. We have traveled almost 25 miles, only 350 to go!

We have seen so many boats with HUGE blocks of pearly white limestone being transported to the work-in-progress temples of Queen Hatshepsut. I just can’t wait to see those, even though my captain will not be present when we do, he is not so fond of the queen, he has not spoken this to me, but my companion has heard this, and so he has told me.

July 20, 1400 BC

Dear Journal,

I have not written for a few days because there has not been much to see, and I have been busy talking to my companion, Sheftu. We have seen crocodiles and hippopotamus, and a few fish, but nothing else. We traveled 150 miles since Saqqara, and have just passed Beni Hassan. Over the last few days, my companion has told me of Beni Hassan. He is very educated. It is made up of 39 tombs, carved high into the side of limestone cliffs. My companion, Sheftu, has visited one of these tombs, and says that the insides of twelve of  them are painted colorfully. They were a magnificent sight.

July 24, 1400 BC (Late Morning)

Dear Journal,

We have almost reached Thebes, and I am exhausted from this journey. I am passing by Queen Hatshepsut’s  Temple. It is called Deir El Bahri. Sheftu has told me much about this temple, he has seen the plans for it and knows what it will look like when it is done. It will have Sphinx’s lining the path up to it. The Sphinx’s will have the head  of Her Majesty. There will be trees lining the path as well. Oh! What a grand temple it is journal! The temple is shadowed by the peak of  Thebes, and that is a good sign, we are almost there!

July 24, 1400 BC (Afternoon)

Dear Journal,

We have reached Thebes at last!  The long awaited journey has come to an end, and it will be a sad moment when I leave this ship, for I have many memories of itand the people aboard it.

July 25, 1400 BC

Dear Journal,

Thebes is amazing! There are so many merchants! The Luxor temple  is even more amazing. I never thought that I, Mara, would ever visit Thebes. So much to tell you in so little time! Right now I am sitting in a corner of one of the local market places. I must go now, so goodbye for now, and I will write in you on my next adventure. So long!

Feb. 10, 2008 - Wow

Wow. Another week has passed. my mom is working

on getting those pics from WDW to my computer so

that you can see more. My cousin came over after church

today and we played in the snow. Today was my dad's

b-day so that is why she came. My uncle al and mom and

dad hung out inside. on tuesday we went skiing. It was

sooo awesome. I haddn't skied at all last year, so I was a

little out of tune-if you know what I mean. = ) It was such a

nice day on tuesday, sunny-yet cold, which kept the snow

nice. We have sooo much snow, and proboally more coming,

spring normally doesn't come until May, so we still have a

long way to go.  Our swingset- which is 10 ft high, is half way

buried in snow. our swings are raised up as high as they go,

yet still our feet need an extra foot of room to swing high,

everybody except Laura, she is soo short to begin with, that she

amazingly enough goes the highest.  Today at church we had a

load of people in our sunday school. most of the time in the

winter, people are skiing, so it was a treat. I am a "helper" at church

with the kids so it was nice to have something to accually help with.

Well I need to round up my

sis from playing legos with jake so that we can go to bed. Hope

you all had a nice Sunday.

Jan. 21, 2008 - so sorry!

Well! I haven't been on in a month,

so here I go! I will write about all of the

happenings at my house since Christmas.

Christmas morning-

It was 5 am. My siblings and I were all

sitting on my bed( it is kinda a tradition

to to all sleep in my room on x-mas eve)

rubbing our eyes, trying to wake up,

when laura, my six year old sister realized

that it was Christmas morning. jake and I

answer her in a sleepy tone, yes, but let

us wake up first. She runs down the hall,

but is stopped by a baby saftey gate, and

comes back with an piece of paper

marked CLUE 1. We open it only to discover

that we are doing Christmas backwards this

year, and in order to get our gifts, we have to

find 11 clues, and follow what they say, or no

gifts. Well, this of course, motivates jake and I.

so from 7am to 9 am the three of us, are all

searching the house for clues. One of the must

do activities was that we had to open oreos to

find three pennies hidden in the 2 packs of

cookies, so once every oreo was opened, and

all three pennies were found we got our next clue,

only to find out that we had to walk down the street

on x-mas morning in 0 degree weather, in our

pj's, to deliver a x-mas morning treat to our f

riends, in order to recive our next clue. it was a

suitcase. That alone set my mind to spinning.

We soon discovered that our present, was a trip

to Walt Disney World (otherwise known as WDW)in

Flordia! you can imagine the joy on my face. jake I

think would have rather had a big lego set, and laura

didn't really know what was going on.

We spent the next two weeks packing and

getting ready. then we were off for 10 Days

in WDW. I won't tell you all about the trip tonight,

cause I would run out of room. I would run on&on&on&on&on....................................................,

WELL YOU GET IT.

Oh, other good news, our basement is being finished

. and laura and i get the room down there. right now we

are CRAMMED into my old room, so once our basement

is finished, it'll be good. = ) ttyl.

ps. sorry to all of you about not writing your tag,

i will work on that as sooon as i can. the down side to the

basement is that our internet was temporaliy out of order,

so I couldn't post 4 a while, sorry for the setback. =)

Dec. 8, 2007 - How WONDERFUL GOD is.

Yesterday we got snow. Not just any snow,

but 2 ft. Two feet is not much here,

but it is compared to what we have gotten

earlier this year and.the most that we have

gotten is about 2 inches. I was outside looking

at our mountains, and thinking, how wonderful

God is. how could we, his people know what

the word beautiful meant if we came out of a

speck of dust. that is COMPLETELY IMPROBABLE.

I wil post pics of the mountains later.
