Emily Dickinson (1830 - 1886)

I love this poem by Emily Dickinson.  In fact, come to think of it, I might have blogged about it before!  I just came across it again in William J. Bennett's "The Book of Virtues", in the chapter on Compassion.  By the way, The Book of Virtues is an excellent resource for character building, literature and poetry,  and copy writing  ideas for your children. We've used it for many years.

If I can stop one heart from breaking,

I shall not live in vain;

If I can ease one life the aching,

Or cool one pain,

Or help one fainting robin

Unto his nest again,

I shall not live in vain.
