It's been so long....
Sorry to not update. Things get away from me.
Life since Aug has been grand. B is a little closer to reading. Even though we are unschoolers, he wants to learn to read and we work little by little using a phonics program... just not always they way it says to use it. He gets frustrated. We are also working through a math cirriculum. Basically he gets to choose which pages he wants to complete (it's all workbook pages). Other than that we discuss different things, play lots of games (card, board, Nitendo, etc) and do lots of activities sporadically. Right now he is into his Nintendo DS, building with Legos and such. Yesterday he said he wanted a "project." Maybe he can start the now-over Jr Lego FIRST project. Our homeschool group is having a science fair type thing later in the spring. I was thinking he could use the Lego project for that, but maybe we can do it now.
We also read lots of different books (or I read to him). He picks some out and so do I. Last night one book meantioned Japan and orgami and a second was written in both English and Korean. So I told him to bring me the globe if he wanted me to find them for him.

Clairification & Goings On
I must clairify from my last post that we really don't have a cirriculum. I have things written down to ease my record keeping for my required reporting. But, all in all we are unschoolers. We do however, use the resources that I have recorded. One day my child will learn how to read. I think as his friend Riley learns more and more, he is wanting to learn. So, we work on those skills periodically.
We did meet with the HIPPO group last week. We went to High Falls State Park. While the kids swam, we talked, got to know each other, etc. The purpose was to plan for the year. I don't think we planned to much, but it was good to get some feedback.

Summer summary
The last few weeks have been busy. I've been making curriculum plans (if you want to call it that). Basically I'm just writing out a whole bunch of books to read through out the year in an excel file so I don't have to write everything down for our official records. I got a lot of great information from www.oldfashionededucation.com. Basically she has found a lot of great free stuff through sites like the gutenburg project (scanned books that are part of the free domain now - published before 1928, etc.) So we are reading some really good old classics (some are actual scans of the pages with the pictures). I've also included listening to an audio from www.kiddierecords.com. These are also public domain works on records that have been recorded. They are pretty good too.
Last week a few from our HIPPO homeschool group met to go bowling. Brandon and I have never been together. We took two friends with us. It was fun... something we don't normally do.
B is currently taking swimming lessons each evening (last week and this week) for a total of 8 days. He has a real sweet teacher named Emma. Most of these teachers are late high school or college age. The only thing I don't like is that the pool is indoors and the clorene STINKS!
Next week B has soccer camp every evening. It's going to be hot. But it will be good to get back into the practice for fall soccer.

Not much going on
We returned from a two week vacation to visit the relatives Friday evening. Before that we had a trip to the Outterbanks of NC. There we visited Kitty Hawk. While in Texas B got a lot of TV time (we don't have cable). He also played dominoes almost every day with us and even played Crazy 8's with his great grandfather who was in the hospital. (We played lots of Crazy 8's too... mainly in the car.)
Now I'm in the process of getting a chicken tractor built. Brandon has commended my construction project... but he doesn't want to lend a hand. Hopefully once the girls are here he will be more interested. Right now he is mastering his new Scooby-Doo Playstation game.

So long...
I have to say I'm SORRY for taking so long for getting back here. We've been soooo busy lately.
I bought B some schooly things. A math program called Miquon Math with some Cuisiner Rods. The program is very hands on. I let B pick and choose.
I've also started finding Unit Study stuff. We are learning about trains (really just reading about them). I put together a Color Tracks game http://www.webeans.net/hutt/educ/colortracks.htm . It is fun and I can create different cards. Right now we are using the ones that you can download with it.
B is really into connect the dots and word searches. I've downloaded a lot of those for him to do. There is a cool site for word searches: http://www.superkids.com/aweb/tools/words/search/
All for now...

HIPPO & More
We've been on the go a lot this last week. I finally found a new homeschooling group called HIPPO that we can relate to. We attended our first outing last Thursday by visiting the World of Energy at Duke Power about 10 minutes from our house. (They want you to feel warm and fuzzy about nuclear energy.) We had a picnic and met lots of homeschoolers... lots of boys. We will fit right in.
I've come to the realization that my child has no interest in the Hooked on Phonics program that my neice devoured. So, we are taking a different route. We are using flash cards. He is so proud of himself that he can read them and looks forward to learning others. We will see how long it lasts.
This weekend we attended our parish weekend at Camp Kanuga. As always it was a lot of fun. Saturday afternoon we took B and a friend Geocaching... and found two caches. One of the two was a multi cache. What fun. Sunday after leaving Kanuga we found 4 or 5 more.

Goooo team!
Yesterday was B's first day of spring soccer. We arrived a little early, so we kicked the ball around. They practiced for almost 1-1/2 hours. Needless to say he slept VERY good last night. I had a hard time waking him this morning.
Today he's at Granddaddy's. They are suposed to go to the barn to work on some things. Sometimes B doesn't want to go... but stay at the house to watch movies or play on the computer. B is learning a lot... from tool names and techniques to how to build a chicken tractor and take care of those new chicks!

Valentine's Day Recap
Yesterday was a work day. Brandon stayed at our friend Cheryl's in the morning and then went to the Stoke's around lunch. Susie forewarned me that he was a little upset that her boys were coming home from school with a bag full of valentines and candy. She did get them to share.... I guess I was a bad Momma and didn't prepare anything. So I told B that I would take him on a date out to eat... we got pizza. After a nice dinner with my son, we headed to the library for our weekly run. Non-story books that he wanted to get included something about electricity and trains (usually if he gets books he likes to get story books). After leaving he mentioned again that he wondered when he would get his valentine card.
I let him know that I didn't know (and felt bad). I did call his Dad while he was in the bathroom at dinner so that I could tell him on his way home to pick up something... which he did.
This morning we surprised B with a birthday present. Yesterday and this morning he was worried because his party isn't until Sunday and he didn't want to have to wait for presents. I'll try and sneak wrap one tonight to take to him too. Too bad I didn't bring the wrapping stuff to work. Maybe I'll look for something here to surprise him in the car.
