Election Thoughts

Twice in the last week I found myself in the van listening to liberals doing the happy dance on a.m. radio over the recent election results. One talk show host gloated "Conservatism has officially died in America". There was a lot of talk about the people "moving left" and "clearly not wanting a one-party-government". Many conservatives I know are distressed at the results and concerned for our country now that Dem's control congress.
Frankly though, I'm a bit encouraged. I don't think this was a vote for liberalism, I think it was a spank to the Republican party. I hope it reflects the fact that conservatives are so fed up with a party that makes a mockery of all they believe in that they were finally willing to try something else. Even, gasp, voting for a Democrat. Because if they'll vote for a Democrat, maybe they'll for for a Constitutionalist.
In '04 so many people I knew were afraid to vote for Peroutka, who actually shared their values and promised biblical leadership, because it would be "wasting their vote" and likely allowing Kerry into the White House. I said it then and I'll say it again now, how would that be worse? Same destination, different route.
I've never understood how you waste your vote when you vote on principle rather than odds. How does your vote count when you use it to support a man who doesn't share your principles?
We Christians fight and fight to get Republicans in office. Why? When will we stop being so naive? The Republican party has long ceased to be a party of conservative values. Maybe the mid-term elections will shake them up. But I don't think so.
There won't be any fundemental change in the direction of this country until there is true revival among the people of God. That is my prayer. That he will turn the hearts of this nation to himself, that we will repent of of our compromise and lack of faith, and the God will heal the land.
This country cannot continue on its current path without self-destructing. But there are glimmers of hope. The homeschool movement, and return to covenental, patriarchal, quiverful thinking are definitely lights in the darkness. Spunky wrote about the Red Diaper babies here, and it is something we have talked about a lot. We are working to raise children who will think biblically in all things, including politics. I look forward to seeing the leadership that comes forward in the next 10 years or so out of the homeschool camp.
There are a lot of people talking about his a lot more eloquently than I. Dave Black has a great essay here about what we ought to be about, and Chuck Baldwin and Tom DeWeese both have interesting commentary on the elections. Leave a Comment { Last Page } { Page 18 of 134 } { Next Page } |
