About Me

A mild-mannered homeschool mom who is faster than a speeding flash card, more powerful than a mega-workbook, and able to leap tall unabridged bilingual dictionaries in a single bound! Look! Up in cyberspace! It's a flamenco skirt! It's an irregular verb chart! No, it's just me, and it's time to learn Spanish.

¿de qué es? - what's it made of?

We've talked before about the sometimes confounding twins "ser" and "estar" - the most common words used in Spanish to translate our verb "to be".  Today we'll talk about a common usage for "ser".

When you need to say what something is made of, you will always use "ser" + the preposition "de".  In the singular present tense, that congugates to "es de", and the plural is "son de".  Here are some examples:

The house is made of bricks - La casa es de ladrillos.

The shirts are cotton - Las camisas son de algodón.

Let's play a matching game.  Here are a list of nouns you can use:
  • the blouse - la blusa
  • the belt - el cinturón
  • the dresses - los vestidos
  • the purse - la bolsa
  • the earrings - los pendientes
  • the shoes - los zapatos
  • los platos - the plates
  • the pants - los pantalones
  • the necklace - el collar
  • the socks - los calcetines
  • the backpack - la mochila
  • la casa - the house
Add any other nouns on your vocab list that will work for this exercise!  Now plug in "es de" or "son de" and add what your noun is made of:
  • cuero - leather
  • algodón - cotton
  • cerámica - ceramic
  • oro - gold
  • seda - silk
  • ladrillos - bricks
  • madera - wood
  • plata - silver
  • rayón - rayon
  • lona - canvas
  • tela - fabric
  • plático - plastic
Have fun putting these together!
