Genuine Boredom?
My dad doesn't believe in boredom.
According to him, a person decides for his or her own self whether or not they are "bored", so to speak. He says that if we look hard enough, we can always find something to occupy ourselves with, and that young people today take it for granted that the sole purpose of the world is to provide them with entertainment.
Needless to say, whenever my dad points this out, my siblings and I protest. "What if you were tied and gagged in a whitewashed room with no windows?" points out Eni. "Then could you say you were bored?"
Hearing this scenario, my dad merely chuckles and turns back to whatever book or magazine he was reading before the whole subject came up.
I suppose there's some sense in his words. After all, boredom really is just another form of laziness. For instance, there are quite a few things I could be doing right now --- cleaning the rats' cages, practicing the piano, writing my fanfiction, or doing my language...to name a few. Yet here I sit in front of my computer screen, claiming boredom but really too lazy to get off my butt and make use of myself. Now isn't that just sad? Perhaps I should pay more heed to my dad and start doing more with my hands when I start feeling "bored".
Sorry about that, folks. I just really had to get it off my chest. *smiles sheepishly* Hopefully, a few of you can relate.
I've noticed that my entries haven't been receiving as many comments of late. Is it because my posts simply aren't interesting enough, or is it because they've become so predictable that people have stopped reading them altogether?
My dad says that too o.o Only, he always adds: "Bored, eh? There's a washing-up that needs doing-" and stuff along those lines >_< You know what I do when I'm bored? I find grid paper and draw tiny easy patterns which I repeat untill the whole page is filled. Might not fall to everyone's liking, but it keeps me entertained for hours xD
I can relate, though I must admit that the boredom philosophy 'round here is self-inflicted.
Maybe your comment count is falling off because it isn't exactly the time things happen to other people. Most people who comment have a blog, and most of those only log on to update it and THEN browse. They probably don't have anything to say, even when your posts are very interesting (The above is a case in point).
I can't really decide on what side I'm on in the "bored" issue. Daddy does have a point, and he's a smart guy, but sometimes it seems like the word "bored" is the perfect word to use in the situation. Hmm....
(By the way...don't think your blog entries aren't interesting! You're so much better at making interesting entries than most other people I know - myself included. And they definately aren't predictable, either. Perhaps people are just in need of time, or else they're too lazy to comment. I'm not sure...but I, for one, think your entries are fantastic. :D)
Hello!
In my family, to say you where board meant you where given a chore to do. So rarely are we board, and when we are we do not blab it to everyone. But, I think your dad is right, if I am ever board I know I can find something that needs to be done, I am most likely just to lazy to do it.
Of course your posts aren't boring or perdictable! What a crazy thing to think... My theory is that, unless you comment on other people's blogs, they often forget to check yours. That's what I'm like, anyway. It's not that they don't like it or aren't interested, they just forget about you.
Hmm, it some ways I agree with your dad on this, but not totally. I'd say that in most cases people who says they are bored have a lot of things they could be doing, but don't feel like getting into. However, there are times when you can be genuinely bored - sitting in waiting rooms, sitting in the car, etc. Usually even in that sort of situation though I'd have my imagination to occupy me, and I'd just start thinking over the next chapter in one of my stories or something like that, however some people nowdays have destroyed their imaginations, which would make that difficult.
And then there's the grey area - I actually think you can be bored even when you have things you could be doing. I have a friend who has no younger siblings, both her parents work, and the house is always tidy. Once she's done her schoolwork she has things she could do, like art or making jewelery or writing, but she finds them really boring to do on her own. I think that that's a valid case of boredom.
Most cases, however, in which people complain of having 'nothing to do', are simply people who are too lazy to do what they could be doing. And yes, your Dad's point that 'young people today take it for granted that the sole purpose of the world is to provide them with entertainment' is probably far too true!
Your sister's point was also a clever one - although I think that if I was in such a situation I'd be too busy trying frantically to figure out a way to escape to be bored!
In reply to your comment - you found that inspiring? Wow. I wish I could say the same thing myself; personally I find that I get so busy talking about the great things I should be doing that I forget to actually do them! I'm glad it served some useful purpose, however.
You guys live in Illinois, right? My family were over there last year, when we traveled around the states. We liked Illinios quite a bit, and are actually considering moving there next year.
Oh, and you haven't told me who CRAZYMAN!!! is yet.
I totally agree. It's like I'm looking at random sites or refreshing pages over and over again when I'm bored, when I have the literary club book to read and a novel to edit. The whitewashed room, I can see that...
No, the posts are great. I try to visit my 'companions'' blogs every time I get on. :) I enjoy reading them very much.
We go by Nimrodel and Tinuviel, two bosom friends writing a blog together. As you may have already noticed, we both possess a deep love for all things
