This was my first year doing gymnastics, and I've really loved it! So far I've done three meets. Last time I earned a white ribbon in bar, and at the State meet I earned a red. Even though I earned two blue ribbons, I was most happy about earning a red in bar because I had to work so hard and really improved. I also improved on beam. Last time I earned a red ribbon, and this time I earned a blue. I love gymnastics because it really challenges me. I love to see myself be able to do things I couldn't do before just by working hard and practicing. I also like watching my friends be able to do things they couldn't do before, like my friend who came to practice one day and she had been working hard on her back handspring. She didn't even know she could do it because she had always needed a spotter, but this day she did it before the spotter could even reach her! She was so surprised she stopped, and the coach stopped the music and gave her a big high five. That's why I love gymnastics! Emily stand and stretch! |
I'm 9! I had a very happy birthday. When I woke up I looked in the mirror to see if I looked older. I thought I looked just as 8 as ever. But I did kind of feel older. One of my favorite parts was going ice skating. It was kind of scary at first because the last time we went my little brother Isaac's finger got stepped on with an ice skate blade and had to go to the hospital for stitches. Thank goodness nothing like that happened this time! We had a lot of fun, especially trying to skate backwards.![]() After that we went home and had cake and presents. My favorite present was my new American Girl Doll, Felicity! I made a bed for her out of her box. I like the time she lived in, the 1700's in colonial America. I love to read about that time. My favorite book is about Felicity's friend, "Very Funny, Elizabeth." ![]() I want to say a very special thank you to a few people. First, Grandma Ruth who was suffering through a difficult illness and still made time to get me a present, actually three, and be there on my birthday to make me feel special. Next, to Grandma Shirley and Grandpa Jim for the wonderful American Girl movies that I have loved watching. And last but not least to Papaw and Grandma Cathy for the beautiful American Girl dress. The most special thank you of all goes to God my Creator who gave me the gift of life and joy and happiness because without Him I would be nothing. My birthday is an opportunity to think about all the gifts He has given me, especially the special people he has put in my life. THANK YOU!!! |

Easter Blessings to you and your family! We had an awesome Easter! As soon as I woke up I got into my Easter dress. I am grateful to have such a pretty Easter dress this year. It is my favorite dress that I have ever had. It was hand made for me by Scarlet Thread. They are a lovely family that make the most beautiful dresses. As soon as I had it on my brothers and I went outside and looked for Easter eggs that Mom and Dad had hidden. We also had to find our baskets. Mine had two bunnies. ![]() Then I got to sing in the choir at church. After that my Grandma and my Great Grandma came over and we had breakfast. After that we ate candy and my brothers went outside. My Grandma was sick, so we said extra prayers for her. ![]() This is the home made butter that we made for Easter dinner. My brothers and I got to take turns shaking the jar, and my Grandma cleaned it and put it in the mold. It tasted great on fresh homemade bread! NA ZDROWIE! That's the Polish toast that my Great Grandma taught us. We were sad that my Grandma couldn't come downstairs for dinner. I made the creamed peas.I had a great Easter and I hope you did, too. May the joy of the risen Christ be with you now and always! |
I went to my first gymnastics competition! It was really fun! I got a red ribbon in floor, beam, and bar, and I got a blue ribbon in vault. I got my first gymnastics trophy. I'm really really really really excited for my nest competition, which is the state meet next month.![]() |
This was really fun to make up until the hemming. I kept trying to put my stitches one on top of the other so I used a ruler and marked off where I should put the stitiches. It was all fine after that. I think it looks pretty good except for the one teeny mistake on the back. While I was doing the red embroidery I went through the backing and didn't notice until it was finished. I'm going to put it in my hope chest to use when I have a house of my own. What do you think?![]() |
A little while after Christmas we were still in the mood for making gingerbread men, but wanted a little less work, so we made brown bread men instead. We used a gingerbread man cookie cutter to cut out a shape from whole wheat bread. The color was so much like gingerbread men that they looked very authentic! After I decorated mine with frosting I put star sprinkles in the eyes and dots for buttons and hearts for the mouth.![]() Here's my finished product! These were really fun to make! Much less work than real gingerbread, but they still looked great. ![]() |

The Brown Thrush by Lucy Larcom "There's a merry brown thrush sitting up in a tree; He's singing to me! he's singing to me!" And what does he say, little girl, little boy? "Oh, the world's running over with joy!
I'm as happy as happy can be!" And the brown thrush keeps singing. "A nest do you see, And five eggs hid by me in the juniper tree? Don't meddle! Don't touch! little girl, little boy, Or the world will lose some of its joy!
If you never bring sorrow to me." So the merry brown thrush sings away in the tree, To you and to me, to you and to me; and he sings all the day, little girl, little boy, "Oh, the world's running over with joy!
Unless we are as good as can be."
This week I'm working on memorizing this poem. I really like it because I really love birds, especially thrushes, and I love baby birds. I would hate to see a wild bird in a cage. This poem is telling us that birds give us joy and we must not try to capture it to take the joy for ourselves because the world (and the bird) will lose that joy. |

The assingnment for this lesson is to write a character sketch for my main character: Mary Anne is an 11 year old girl who is shy except to her family and her best friend Sindney. She has a hard time dealing with Sid's hot temper. She is responsible. She has a rule for herself that before going out to play she always does her homework and chores first and always practices her flute. She loves horses but can't have one. She likes to visit the horses that Sid's family owns, but she hates the smell and the mess. But she loves horses so much that she wants to get over it. She can't help feeling jealous that Sid has horses and she can't. She also likes nature and is great at playing the flute. she loves reading and going to the nature reserve. She has brown eyes, dark brown hair and light skin with a few freckles. I changed a few things from my original character charts. Mary Anne's best friend's name is going to be Sidney, and I've added a few other little things. |

This is a belted kingfisher that I painted today. Last summer my family and I saw at the lake by our house two belted kingfishers. Every time we would walk to the lake we would always watch for one of them. One time we saw both of them sitting on a branch. Once we saw one diving down to catch a fish. He came up with one. It was so cool! I like water birds, especially this one because of the way it flies and dives. |

Hi everyone, You asked about how I lost my tooth, so I'll tell the story. I usually brush my teeth when I wake up in the morning. I was especially excited to do it that morning because I had a loose tooth. I thought it might fall out when I brushed my teeth. It didn't, but it did get pretty loose from the scrubbing. Throughout the day it was getting looser and looser, because I was wiggling it a lot with my finger and my tongue. I was really excited. I hadn't lost a tooth in a really long time. My little brother saw me wiggling it, and he wanted to wiggle it, too. I let him do it, but he wiggled it backward and the tooth turned around!!! The end part was sticking out and it looked really funny. I went into the bathroom and tried to turn it back around. YO HO! That did it!!! the tooth came out in my fingers. As soon as it came out I ran around the house looking for mom to show her my lost tooth!!! I finally found her talking on the phone, so I couldn't talk to her. AWWWWW! All I could do was hold up my tooth to show her while I was jumping up and down. Then I went upstairs to show Dad. I tried to make it so he had no idea until I revealed my tooth, but he guessed right away. I didn't want to loose my tooth, so I went to my room and got a little box to put it in. I never put my teeth under my pillow without putting them inside of something to keep them safe. That night after I put on my nightgown that Mom had made for me, I held up my tooth so Mom could take a picture of it. That's the picture I put here. Then I went to bed as soon as I could with the tooth under my pillow, safely in its box. When I woke up the next morning I laid there for a minute before I remembered that I had lost a tooth. I quickly looked under my pillow and I found three papers under my box. I first looked at the papers. One was a certificate that said I had lost a tooth, and the other two were poems about the tooth fairy. Then I looked in the box. WOW!!! I counted and I found TWENTY EIGHT DOLLARS and FIVE CENTS! I ran into Dad and Mom's room and showed them my box and how much money I had gotten. I counted three times before I was sure about how much it was. I told Dad and Mom that I thought the tooth fairy must have left her whole stash of money on accident. Later that day when Dad went to do some errands, I took the money to the bank and deposited it into my savings account. I'm saving for college mostly, but I also would like to buy an American Girl Doll! I have another loose tooth. It is the same tooth on the other side. Isaac is going to be the master of pulling that one out, too! I'm trying to get him to wiggle it, but he won't. |

I just lost my tooth! Yay! |

Hi! This week I'm going to participate in Friday Show n Tell with Canadagirl. I'm showing a drawing I did in my Draw Write Now book this week. I used to do a lot of drawing in this book, but this year I've been working more on my nature journal instead. But I like scarecrows, and it's the closest I can get to making a scarecrow. I wonder if this will keep the crows away. What do you think?

Hello! I just wanted to show you a project I'm working on. It came from a book series called Grandmother's Hope Chest. This is the project from the first book, called The Running Rooster. It is a pot holder with an embroidered rooster on it. The book shows every step for the project. Here are some pictures: First, you pre-wash your fabric and iron it. Then you trace the pattern from the book on to your fabric. This picture is hard to see, but it shows the next step, which is basting the front and back fabric to the batting. I was pretty proud of my basting stitches since this is my first real needle work project. The next step is to thread your needle with your red embroidery floss. You can see the rooster pattern on my fabric in this picture. Now I'm working on the embroidery. I'll show more pictures when I get past that step! |

Someone left me a comment that hamsters usually can't be kept together, and that is true. But we were told by the pet store that these particular hamsters would be ok together. I guess not. I wish they did, though. Last time they fought, Frost got a red spot on her nose, and Flurry got a little bite on her belly. They are healing well, and I'm glad they look like they are almost all better now. I wish you could see when they have their cheeks totally full of food. They are so cute! I love it when they crawl up my sleeve. It feels so funny! I'm trying to train them to come to me every time I open the cage. When I open the door of the cage I always have a peanut in my hand. They love peanuts, and they come to me. Last time I went to see Frost she kept nosing my hand and I tried giving her different treats. Then I realized I hadn't given her a yogurt treat in a really long time, so I did and she loved it. I like how Flurry is always eager to come to me. But it's also fun to play with Frost because she just sits and lets me feed and pet her. I read that you can train hamsters to stand by holding a sunflower seed over their head while you say "stand". If you do that for a while you can say "stand" without the treat and they will do it I can't wait to try it. |

This is a poem I chose to memorize for this week. It was written by Gelett Burgess. I chose this poem because I think it's a very wise poem. Since I can't recite a poem through the computer, I'll have to write it here for you. Bravery It's Terrible Brave To try to save A girl on a runaway horse; You could do that, of course! But think of trying To keep from crying, When you're hungry, and tired and cross- You couldn't do that, of course! Or could you? |

My favorite character is Black Beauty. Black beauty is a horse that is brave, hard working and loyal. He is passed from master to master and serves each one faithfully. He becomes part of a family for some and even saves a few lives! The Character I like least is Nelly from On the Banks of Plum Creek. Nelly is mean, showy, proud, boastful, and saucy. She is Laura's school mate and is always showing off. |

We tried one more time to put Frost and Flurry in the cage together. Frost was in her favorite hiding place under the wheel. She was digging a hole. She had just started to come out of the hole when we put Flurry in. Flurry sniffed around and found Frost and they started fighting. I did not think Dad could get Flurry out but he did by digging the other way under the wheel. We are using a plastic storage container for Frost's cage. I cleaned out the box and put in bedding. I put in a plastic igloo for her to sleep in. I taped a water bottle onto the side of the box and put in a food dish. I also put in a wheel and two cardboard tunnels and one plastic tunnel. I am very sad that they cannot live together but I am very glad that I can keep them both. |
