• Oct. 9, 2008 - Homeschool Seniors '09

Recorded By Miss Jocelyn

This year I am a senior, and I was excited to see the 2009 homeschool seniors shirts from Homeschool Boutique. Of course the Boutique is always adding new products so I would encourage you to visit their site often!

The ‘09 senior shirts, right now, only come in white, but they will be available in hot pink and cardinal red within a week or so.

Homeschool Senior '09

The Homeschool Boutique donated a shirt to giveaway so if you’d like to enter to win one just blog about it on your site and leave me the link here. This is open to seniors and parents of seniors, though if you know of a friend who is a senior you’re welcome to enter too - just give me their name.

If you are a senior and haven’t heard of the Homeschool Senior site, please go check it out. You can join in with the graduating class of ‘09 if you like!

Blessings!

• Oct. 8, 2008 - Broviac EMERGENCY

Recorded By Hands and Hearts in Noah Updates
Noah's broviac just snapped off where it was repaired Sunday.  We tried to control the bleeding with hemostats twice but both times the pressure caused the line to rupture above the hemostats.  We were getting ready to call an ambulance when I found a way to get a secure clamp on the line.  Praise God we were both right there when the line snapped.  It only would have taken a few minutes for Noah to bleed to death.

We are both uneasy with the idea of the line being repaired again.  Noah's nurse doesn't think it can be safely repaired.  We are heading to the ER as soon as we finish getting the boys down - they are very worried and Jeff wants to pray with them before we leave.  I believe he will end up needing a new line.

Please go before the Lord to ask for clear wisdom.  We don't like the idea of a new line, but I'm frankly very frightened of another repair that could give way with no one watching.  We try to watch him all of the time.  Even watching him wasn't enough to keep him from getting his line caught on the desk leg - he took one more step and snapped the line.  God was so good to spare my baby's life.  He was right here with us and Jeff looked up right as the line snapped.  The Lord is good and mercies endure to all generations.

We will update when we can.

Also Noah's hemoglobin was down to 9.6 Monday (down from 10 Friday).  He almost certainly needs a transfusion now.

Blessings,
Kate

• Oct. 8, 2008 - Helpme2Teach

Recorded By Nikki in Reviews

This Tos Crew member is Steering into port and
is ready to tell you all about the Helpme2teach
website found at www.helpme2teach.com

Helpme2teach is an internet directory
for teachers, students and parents.Helpme2teach
was created by a teacher with 40 years experience.
Over her 40 years of teaching she collected many
website links. She took all of these links and created
a directory for  finding a specific topic
or theme of teaching.

Membership to the site is
1 year for $29.95
3 months for $15.95
1 month for $9.95
3 days for $4.95

You can use paypal or Authorize.net for
your purchase.

I was so excited to begin searching through all
the sites. I put in my login name and password
and began to search around. From 1 search I
was blocked from the site thanks to my internet
provider. I clicked contact on the helpme2teach
site and was excited again to have a quick response
and access to the topics. If you have Aol then
this may happen to you too but don't worry
it will be fixed quickly.

Once I was able to access the site I was
able to search through 2,000 sites from Prk- high
school. You are brought to a table of contents with
26 topics and many subtopics under each. As I searched
I found it was simplier to search by clicking the topics
already exsisting rather than searching an individual
topic in the search bar. At the time of access I was
working on an Election class for our Homeschool group.
I had several websites and books to prepare for the
class but was in search of other ideas. I had
two choices American elections and voting or
government to search through. There were a few
sites listed there that I had found and a few that
I didn't have. The explanation of the sites were
through and color coded so that you knew the
appropriate age level/grade level the site would
work for. Since I was working on Co-op things
I also decided to try my spring topic
Dr. Suess but found nothing.
There were many beginning reader sites and
ideas that could go along with a topic though
along with Dr. Suess if thought creatively.
Which I can surely do .

I also spent much time reading about acedemic
standards per my state and was thrilled with
the special needs section for teachers. I also was
excited about all the great links for drivers education
as I have 3 teens at the moment working on this
endeavor. As scary as that maybe.

Some of the topics were full of information and
some of them were not as full. There weren't to
many links on lapbooking (My favorite topic)
but from the other topics on the site this looks
like a spot that is new and in
the process of being built upon. There also
weren't many topics or sites on Christianity but
it seems now as well that this is a new topic
and is being built upon.

I do really like this site but I am not sure I would
use it for myself. I think that if you are a
homeschool mom just starting out then this might
be a great place to begin. As a teacher my
favorite part of planning is the research. I like
learning and searching around as much as I enjoy
actually teaching something new to my children.
I do remember though in the beginning how hard it
was to gain all of the great websites I have in my
favorites and think a homeschooler just starting
out could gain some insightful links from
www.helpme2teach.com

*If you would like to view more reviews on this topic
go to the Tos Homeschool Crew  website.

• Oct. 8, 2008 - Apple Games

Recorded By Nikki in Math ideas

I created a few fun apple games from
the last two weeks that I haven't gotten to
share with you. One was a pattern game I
made for Spirit. I really enjoy creating these
type of games for the kids. They are different
from everyday and are inexpensive to create.

I cut strips of white paper and drew on them
the apples that I wanted by color. Some of the
patterns were simple like ABAB patterns.
Others may be more complex such as ABCABC
Or even AABB etc.. Then I cut out apple shapes
in the colors I drew and my child matches the apples
or continues the pattern for each card. Spirit really
enjoys this game. He's getting better at it everyday.

Worm, apple, Tree, Pie

Cut out all of the shapes..
worm, apples, Apple trees, and apple pies.
Each worm is = to 1
Apples= 10
Apple trees=100
apple pie=1,000

Roll a dice. When you have 10 worms
you can trade them in for 1 apple and so on.
It takes awhile to win a pie but if you save the
game from day to day you will get there.
This is a great place value game. When
my children were tired of playing we put their
pieces in a ziplock bag with their name on.
The next time we played we just pulled out
our baggies and continued on. You can
also create other games with + and - dice.

• Oct. 8, 2008 - Funny things Kids Say and do...

Recorded By Nikki in Family life

I just had to share some funny things
that happened this week. Spirit is at the age
where he is starting to talk and it comes out
in a funny way...

Spirit has a stuffy nose this week.
 Spirit said, "My nose hurts"
I said "Should mommy put something on your
nose to make it feel better?"
Spirit,"How about tape"
"We don't want to use tape. Tape would
hurt your nose and you wouldn't be able to breathe.
Mommy, just wants to put a little cream on it to help
it heal."
Spirit, "Chocolate?!"

At that point I gave up and took him upstair
to look at the cream and put it on.

--------------------------------------------

On another occasion...

Our living room was sort of getting dark.
Dad and I were watching a movie and the kids
were in their rooms playing. On occasion we
would take turns going up and checking on them.
Dad had just gone up but Spirit came down
waving his arms...
"water, fly, boom!!"
I looked at dad puzzled. What were they doing.
Dad goes on to explain that when he had peeked
in on them. Superboy had had an ice cream pail bucket
filled just a little with water and was washing
his brothers feet. He said that he was going to
tell them that water in their bedroom wasn't a
good idea . Then he saw Superboy washing
Spirits toes. Even between his toes and dried
them off. I laughed and said like Jesus??
Before we could really comprehend what was
going on Superboy came down and told the
tale. He was washing Spirits feet and he was
sitting on a bench. Apprently Spirit tipped
backwards and took the water bucket with him.
His feet in the air with the bucket attached.
I reached out and touched Spirit and realized
he was wet. We just laughed and laughed.
I couldnt even be upset about the wet
carpet. The image was to humorous
since I knew Spirit was fine. Of course
later we talked about how that probably
wasn't a good idea in their rooms. I asked
Superboy why he didnt just wash them in
the bathroom. His response...

I hadn't thought of that mom.

• Oct. 8, 2008 - Fall Favourites

Recorded By Miss Jocelyn

Felecia at Flower In The Rain tagged me with listing my fall favourites, and since I haven’t done any tags in awhile I thought I’d give this a go ’round. Now, I love fall, especially here in Indiana where you can watch the trees turn to beautiful colours of red, orange, maroon, yellow, and brown. However, I do NOT like the freezing cold weather that slowly moves in! Eeeek! I wouldn’t mind if it didn’t get lower than 40….but here are my favourite fall things.

1. Favorite Smell? fading leaves as the wind blows more than usual
2. Favorite Food? pumpkin pie or bread
3. Favorite Color? burnt orange
4. Favorite Drink? hot tea with honey and creamer
5. Favorite Treat? egg-nog
6. Favorite Place to go? walking through the harvested fields back the woods
7. Favorite Candy? I don’t care for candy
8. Favorite Movie to watch? Little Women
9. Favorite Clothing to wear? my 6yr old blue hoodie that used to be Danielle’s sister’s… years ago.
10. Favorite Outdoor Activity? walking
11. Favorite Football Team? Uh none
12. Favorite Fall Holiday? Jesus’ birth (he was actually born in Setpember, not December)
13. Favorite Haunted place? you know haunted means “frequently visited”? I’d say the woods or the fields.
14. Favorite Food at Thanksgiving Dinner? greenbean casserole and turkey
15. Favorite Pie? pumpkin
16. Favorite Fall Hobby? looking at all the pumpkins or finding interesting leaves
17. Favorite Fall Memory? when Amanda, Rachel, Eric, Hannah, Mother Dear, and I went down the hill, made a leaf pile, and all played in it.
18. Favorite Fall Sight? the trees far off that look like a painted-masterpiece…. oh wait they are.
19. Overall Favorite thing about Fall? the colours
20. Overall Favorite Season? summer changing into fall

I guess I’m suppose to tag someone, but instead I shall put a linky on and if you post your fall favourites you can link it.

I do wanna know one of your fall favourites though!

250,000 women/year left infertile from abortion complications

By Tim Waggoner

ST. PETERSBURG, September 31, 2008 (LifeSIteNews.com) – Alarmingly high abortion rates in Russia are leaving an increasing number of women infertile, said Marina Tarasova, deputy head of the St. Petersburg Research Institute For Gynecology and Obstetrics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, at an international conference on Monday.

The St. Petersburg Times reported that with 64 percent of Russian women procuring abortions, 200,000 to 250,000 women each year are stripped of their biological ability to procreate because of permanent effects from the procedure.

"Over the past five years, female infertility in Russia has increased by 14 percent, and over 1.5 million Russians need advanced medical technology to become pregnant and maintain a healthy pregnancy," Tarasova said.

She also mentioned that by the end of last year, there were 5.5 million infertile couples in the country.

In the teenage population, one in four women have a gynecological ailment or reproductive disorder. Furthermore, over the last five years, there has been a 30 percent increase in the number of women aged 15-17 who have experienced these health problems.

The Russian government is attempting to promote family values within the country, naming 2008, "The Year of the Family."  Abortions, however, are still offered free of charge at all state clinics.
