Preschoolers

I found a blog I enjoyed for her emphasis on caring for our preschoolers.  They are such important little people and are in an exciting stage of development.  Let's keep them busy also.  A book with lots of ideas on this is Montessori From The Start, by Paula Polk Lillard and Lynn Lillard Jessen.  Although I don't agree with many of her ideas for infants(not pro breastfeeding and not enough mother child contact) the ideas for toddlers and preschoolers are excellent.  Here are just a few.

1.  Don't over buy toys and be sure that what you do buy is lovely, orderly and developmentally appropriate.  Avoid plastic which will never biodegrade and is not usually lovely, avoid overfull messy toyboxes which discourage orderliness in children.

2.  Teach them while little to care for their hygiene.  Give them a little facecloth and take turns washing their face, give them a turn to brush their teeth and teach them where to put their clothes when soiled.

3.  Give them child sized tools for cleaning.  Most little children would be delighted to sweep up with a small broom, and having a small child organize silverware or socks is a great exercise in categorizing as well as teaching them to help.

4. Teach them to be orderly.  When finished with crayons, they can place them back on a low shelf, give them a place to put finished drawings and have toys sorted into bins or baskets so that cleanup is streamlined.

Hope these are helpful ideas for encouraging and training our special little ones.

Wish I had read that when I had toddlers - maybe they would be a little neater. I have frustrated memories of that junk filled toy box. LOL.

Re: Charlotte Mason's Series likened to Ben Hur. I think you must be right! I have enjoyed the CM series so much more than commentaries written by others. Maybe I can read these things because I don't have any toddlers!

By the way, how cool is it that you live in Mexico??? I was born in Guadalajara - that's in Jalisco, on the other side from where you are, I think. Lived there for a year before we moved back to the states. Mis Padres Hablan Espagnol, pero, no hablo mucho.

Do you have to deal with a lot of occultism? We dealt with that a lot with our house help in Texas.

I found you at BritishColumbia's Blog. I remeber going down to Ensanada, Mexico when I was in High Shool two different summers on a Missonary team with my Youth Group. I fell in love with the Mexican People down there. I wish someday to go again. I really enjoyed your blog and will visit again. I have added you to my friend list and I hope to get a chance to know you better. God Bless.

No, mis padres no estaban misioneros. My mother was going to the university in Guadalajara and my dad was drilling water wells for the Mexican government. We left a year after I was born and moved to Texas.

My husband and I just read your email. Let me know when would be a good time in Spring.

My nephew lives in San Diego. We can drive down in our RV and leave it with him - if that would be best??? Then drive into Mexico with our jeep. Let me know what you think is best.

My husband just informed me he doesn't know "EVERYTHING." He said that building in Mexico is different, but he wants to help. I do know he's gifted and can learn the differences very quickly and be very useful.

I would love to help with whatever I can - I'm not afraid to work. My children are "usually" very well behaved. Angelena is going through her "No!" stage, but learning how to be sweet.

Anyway, give me some ideas of what I could be useful at down there and I'll prepare myself and the kids! I'm so glad for the opportunity to see what you're doing for the people.
