The Old Schoolhouse Magz
How many of you get TOS? Did you get your summer edition yet? I didn't get mine and I have been a member for a year, so I got the Winter and Spring editions, but not summer. Is it coming soon or should I contact them?
I still haven't read through all of those two, but I don't want to miss an issue!!

Charter Schools
Thinking about alternatives to homeschool, if need be, and my friend directed me to charter schools. I had never really thought much of them. I thought they were equated with private academies. It's nice to find that they are as good as if not better than private establishments. There are special schools for different concentrations like business and the arts. These types of schools have small class sizes that are maximized for the student's individual potential to bloom. The best part: they are free. Charter schools are public schools with a very select group of people who attend. School can last from one to four hours a day. Class subjects for higher grades run in 3 week courses and you can take 2 courses at a time. Most of the work is actually done at home.
So that is a viable alternative for us if we ever need one. I hope we never do.

Brighter Vision and Rod&Staff
He is loving these two curric's. I am happy that they are both inexpensive and relaxed approaches to learning. He has been absorbing so much. Today he told his dad what he learned about the shells that were sent in the Brighter Vision package. When he got the shells, we explored a bit on google and learned about the animals that use them and things like that. Today is when he decided to tell his father all that he learned. Good stuff.

Curriculum reviews Part 1
We have been using Brighter Learning
for the last two months. I can say that it has a great value for what
you get in their package. You get one per month for less than $18
total. The first shipment was $1.99 for the shipping and handling so
you can preview what they have and decide if you want to continue with
their program. They send you age appropriate activities, books, and
workbooks for you and your child to do together.
We have also been using the Preschool pack from Rod and Staff.
I was shocked by the lack of color, but my son doesn't seem to mind. He
loves the workbooks and is doing great remembering his verse. We have
been reading the same story for one week now and he can recite his
verse rather well.
Thinking that we may keep his learning as Christian based and interesting as possible, I have decided to start with My Father's World for Kindergarten while looking for a good deal on Student of the Word
for supplementing. I figure that I will have the SOW curriculum by the
time his Kindergarten is over with. My Father's World has lots of color
and great experiments to do with your child. I am also contemplating
keeping some of the workbooks from Rod and Staff since he responds so
well to them. His math program will be *unless I find something
comparable or better* Math U See. I have also been turned on to another math program that I will talk more about after I view their free DVD.
I have also ordered a catalog from Rainbow Resource. I am waiting for that to come and then I will let you know what I think.
There you all go :D Hope that it gives you something to look into.

still undecided
I might be able to import my journal to this site, but we shall see... Until then enjoy my other journal for my son's adventures in learning!
I will share the list of curriculum that I am looking at. I may introduce them to him in an unschooling fashion:
Student of the Word
Sonlight
Rod and Staff
My Father's World
I have looked at many others but these are the ones that I am most
interested in finding out about. Student of the Word looks mighty
promising, but unless I get books with lots of colors in them, there
wont be any to be had. I just got the Rod and Staff Preschool books in
my hand as I was typing this entry. They have NO color at all save the
covers of the books! You have to color everything in yourself, which
includes the Bible story book. My Father's World only goes up to 8th
grade *which seems to be hubby's cut off for the baby to go to PS*, but
if we decide to continue then we have to choose another path. I guess
then I could get to Student of the Word Unit by Unit. *sigh* The
choices we make today will definitely affect his tomorrow.
Did you know that the average cost of private Christian school in our
area is about 10x's the price of a decent curriculum? PER YEAR!!! So by
the time the baby turned 18, we would have spent nearly $50K for
Kindergarten through graduation. This does NOT include supplies, field
trips, uniforms, gas for running back and forth, lunches, snacks, and
whatever else comes up in the course of his academic life. God bless you all :D

Getting serious
This is my first blog entry here. I am
testing to see if I want to transport all my son's homeschooling
experiences here. I am currently hosted at blogger. Wanted to know if
anyone saw advantages to being here rather than there.
