Psalm of the Week: Philippians 2:1-4
December 24, 2007
I wrote most of this blog on sticky notes at work today! Not joking at all. I have the seven notes right here to prove it. See!? Oh, I guess you don't...

Merry almost-Christmas!

Last weekend, on Friday, I went to see the Nutcracker in San Francisco. It was so much fun! Well, getting dressed up and going out to dinner at Buca De Beppos was just as much fun (if not more) than seeing the ballet; that was just the cherry on the ice cream sundae. I don’t particularly like cherries, but I love ice cream.

I am not afraid of heights. I am more afraid of dentists than I am of scaling cliffs or riding Tower of Terror (best ride ever!). But for some reason, when I found myself standing at the top row of the theater on Friday, looking down the steep grade at the stage that seemed miles away and looking to the right and seeing all the rows of chairs and people moving around… everything seemed positioned at an impossible angle. I like straight lines. I like things that make sense. My mind was bent, challenged by this theater and I don’t really know why. I guess that is not a bad thing, but it was a queer feeling. Kind of like an earthquake – during your lifetime, you get kind of used to solid ground being there when you put your foot down. That’s life. But during an earthquake, that built in security is removed and suddenly the ground is not there for you, the senses rebel. Anyway, someone smarter than me could probably draw some deep life lesson from this experience of mine, but I am content to have a happy, if curious memory.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot, Christmas is tomorrow! (How do I keep forgetting?) To tell the truth, I am more excited about our church’s youth winter camp that will start on December 27th, only two days after Christmas! I have official youth leader status this year, although I think I am still at the bottom of the food chain as far as leaderly duties go (“I think I need a better duty!” –Nacho). Just kidding, I am excited about my duties this year. I am helping with team building games, running the Media Shout, and I get to be a counselor this year. The theme for camp is equipping and encouraging our youth to pursue Christ and work out their salvation (Phil 2:12). I believe that those who have accepted the gift of salvation and put their faith in God (faith which comes from God in the first place) have been equipped with everything they need for life and godliness through His grace and our life purpose is to seek to know Him and seek to bring Him glory. I hope that the campers will be reminded, or realize for the first time, that God is pursuing a real relationship them. This may sound strange, but I am praying that hearts will be broken at camp as people realize their need for God. I am the last person to advocate than a relationship with God is based on emotional reactions, but when people realize their own nothingness and God’s holiness, I think that is when God works in people. I am excited.

Well Christmas is in only one hour. I had better get to bed. I think I hear footsteps on the roof… James and I made up a song at dinner:

Santa got run over by his reindeer

Walkin’ to the barn on Christmas Eve

No one knows what spooked those stupid reindeer

But as for me and Jessica/James… uhh (sneaky smiles)… Merry Christmas!

December 25, 2007 - Wow, I get to be the first...

This doesn't happen very often, I need to sit and enjoy the moment of being first. Actually, I am already sitting, so I will stand and do the same...

Alright, enough reveling.

Buca de Beppo is a Hector Family favorite. Since there are so many of us, they usually seat us in the "Pope Room", and we have fun spinning the bust of the Pope around to stare a various members of the family... Those are some fun memories.

It was quite amusing seeing you drive by us on Hwy 33, rather like driving into a mirror... Sorry we couldn't stay. We only had time to drop cookies/etc. at a few of our favorite family's houses, and then get to Grandma's house for dinner. Hence the haste.

Tell your mom the house was not that messy! One of the things I like about your house is that it is like ours, lived in and comfortable. You don't have to feel nervous about kicking back on the couch and relaxing.

Have a Merry Christmas, and enjoy Winter Camp. We will expect pictures.

Later,

BFH
