The wind outside is making really scary noises
My mom said I couldn't use the computer tonight if I didn't update my blog. I guess she is curious about how my life is going since I don't seem to be at home that much anymore. Just kidding, I talk to my mom all the time, even when there is no time. But the part about never being home is true. School started last week and soon I'll be spending mornings that I'm not at school or work at an elementary school in town, observing and tutoring. James and I got home from our speech class tonight and everyone was already in their rooms, getting ready for bed.

I've started teaching a class on composition. Three of the students are my siblings and the other three I have known pretty much their whole lives, so it's a little weird that I am their teacher, but it is really fun, at least for me. I think I should make them all call me Miss Dunfee. Just kidding, that would sound really strange coming from Rachel or Kody Paul. Yesterday we talked about brainstorming for ideas to write about and how to get started on organizing those ideas. So here is a question for you: What are some ways you brainstorm for ideas? Do you have any special techniques you use to come up with ideas for writing? Let me know, and I'll pass them on to my students.

I tried to find a recent family photo, but we haven't all been all together in the one picture for a long time. This is the closest I could come up with:

This is Rachel's 8th grade graduation last spring. A couple of us are missing from the picture.



This one is dad and Brian (2 years old, not pictured above) working on our room addition.



I think Kirsten took this picture two years ago. It's the view from our house, but I'm just putting it in here because I like the picture.



I wish I could post or email you pictures of San Francisco with Ashley, but all my pictures from that day are on film and I don't even have prints of them to scan. I do have some pictures of when it snowed up in the canyon. I remember you were visiting that Christmas.

Okay, I read the part for Uncle Lowell, even though it wasn't for me. However, somewhere on a Hector computer there should be a Dunfee whole family photo from Thanksgiving 07. Didn't we take one with just your family? I'll see what I can hunt down.

Yes, mom did stay up until I got home (1:30am)... but now she went to bed and I am still up and eating a really really late dinner, or a really really early breakfast of chips and salsa and deviled eggs. Yum! You can't get any better than that...

I'll see what I can do in the whole Dunfee family picture department.

To tell you the truth, I don't spend too much time brainstorming. I pretty much start typing/writing whatever pops into my head first (that crinkled-up paper napkin sitting next to my computer doesn't look much like a snowball). See? I guess I probably didn't do a good job with the brainstorming for brainstorming ideas though... did I? Maybe I can be a good example for your class on what NOT to do when trying to brainstorm.

Speaking of the weather in the brain... I think mine just got zapped by lightning. It is now fried.

One minute I was talking glibly to the mouthpiece, the next I hear faintly "Ka . . ." So I say "Jess?" and sit there for a good 20 seconds trying to talk to someone who is apparently no longer listening. Well, I better call to make sure you're not dead. ------------------------------------- Yeah!! You're alive!!!
So now I have to answer your question: Usually I sit and think, and whatever comes to my head I either discard and go to next thing or think it's the best idea since baked bread and USE IT!!! Pretty hard core. If you need me to explain my grey matter in simpler terms don't hesitate to ask.
Make sure you wip all them wipper snappers into tip-top shape!

Great family photo (yes, I couldn't help reading the Uncle Lowell part either) Betcha I can name the ones missing - Brian, Suzanna and James - do I win something??

Brainstorming? for me that name describes it exactly - remember I was the one you recommended for your class... :O) Are you going to be teaching a class on blogstorming cuz if you do I'll be in the front row.

I remember the week of Rachel's graduation, everyone had the flu at one time or another. That day it was Brian and Susanna's turn and James stayed home to tend the sick.

Brainstorming for writing ideas: As I look out the window and don't see the wind in the trees (for lack of leaves) but hear the whistle of the cold, cold wind, I have a poem forming in my mind. I can also see a green farm field next to a brown field, and the horizon spouts a long line of palm trees, and it doesn't go together in my brain. I was forming a Haiku earlier with Brian's funny baby words. When ever I see the printed word my eyes go directly to them. I read everything. I make lists for everything. A punishment for me is not to read or write. Why would anyone need to work at or sweat over finding ideas to write about? This is not something I can imagine. I have no idea how to make this happen for someone else.

Hence I send my own students to your class to learn how to compose. Good luck honey!

Ok, that was strange. Well it was the first thing that popped in to my head. To answer your question, I sit there and think, (for those of you who can't figurer this one out, see Thinking for dummies). Jess if this helps your class then I could make a guest appearance or something. We need a good excuse to come down the hill and see your family every once and a while

Um, do you mean something in particular from Thanksgiving? Or do you want to have another whole Thanksgiving again soon. That would actually be fun. We could do it on a day your Dad is home. Or we could do it in Patterson... Ben has to be willing to make about 6 pies though, and transport them here.
