Biblical Girlhood Contest

I am very excited to introduce the Biblical Girlhood contest (sponsored by my store and other blog). Here are the rules:

Write an essay (no longer than 4 pages), describing how you are able to maintain your faith and Biblical feminity/girlhood in today’s world.

There will be three winners, one from each age group. The prizes are:

Ages 7-10: A Grandmother’s Hope Chest Book Set, which consists of: Grandmother’s Hope Chest Book 1 and Potholder Kit and Grandmother’s Hope Chest Book 2 and Bread Cloth Kit

Ages 11-15: A copy of The Future Christian Homemaker’s Handbook and a $10 gift card to our store.

Ages 16-21: A copy of So Much More and a $15 gift card to our store.

Because I want serious, well thought out essays, the contest deadline is in one month. All essays must be sent to me at contact@childrensclothesetc.com by October 14 2006. Be sure to include your name, email address, and age.

Please send this post to anyone you know who might be interested.

The essays will be judged on the following criteria:

25 points-Grammer

25 points-Writing Style

75 points-Use of Scripture (I’m not saying include a verse in every sentence, but your essay should be Biblically sound, with proper use of scripture to back up your points)

25 points-Originality

A ‘perfect’ essay would have 150 points.

Note- I do not expect the same level of writing from a 7 year old as I would expect from a 21 year old. As such, each age group will be judged accordingly. Also, the point of the contest is for young women to be encouraged by other young women who are living within their faith. Please don’t become overly involved with points or prizes when writing your essay. I encourage you to pray and write from the heart.

If you would like to print a copy of the rules for reference, here is a ‘print view’. (PDF)

Now for the fine print…….

You must be a female between the ages of 7-21 (you must be within the age range by October 14 2006), unmarried and have no children. All essays submitted become the property of Children’s Clothes ETC. The essays must be original. Only USA residents are eligible.

And reality hits...

Why is it that we have SO MUCH TIME before homeschool starts and then once we start homeschooling chaos happens and we can't get anything done. I'm still reading to Bee and everything. But all of my planned crafts etc - no time. Family is coming in, we've been out all day. Arggh! I love to make lists and check them off! Oh well, we have all the time in the world ( that's what I keep telling myself).

Geography Curriculum

Posted in General
I've listed a geography curriculum book in my eBay store (it's new ) If anyone is interested. I also have listed other education books that are in great condition but are way too advanced for us to use anytime soon. Bee is off freecycling and shopping with the grandparents so I have a feeling school today will be after nap time.

“The letter A”

  Starfall A

Color A worksheet

The number one.

Color the number one,

Did squares instead

Read Daniel and the Lion’s Den

Went wonderful! We basically are having 'structured' circle time. Bee loved Ask Mr. Bear and wanted to read it again (we didn't because I didn't want her to tire of it). We then did the square worksheet and talked about squares. She knows ALL of her shapes except for this one. We must work on this more. After that we did the Daniel in the Lion's den story and watched Starfall. Is there a Starfall type website for numbers? It was a very good day! I liked how we are more relaxed. At her age she doesn't need to be in 'school'.

Starting Out!

Posted in General
A Brief Background
I am very excited about this new journey in my family's life. I am going to homeschool my niece for preschool. My family is not 'anti-homeschool', but we have decided that she will attend a local (private) school in our city for kindergarten and on. However, she should be home until then (she's just a baby! ) and we still want her to be ready.

Our Game Plan
My niece (her nickname is 'Bee) is only 2.5 yrs old, so we wont do a lot of serious studying. We will go over numbers, counting, letters, animals, etc. I have found various free online resources and am looking into Before 5 in a Row. Does anyone have any feedback on that? She LOVES to 'read' and being read too. So that might be a good investment (plus it's pretty cheap on Ebay).
I like the plan on this website: http://www.letteroftheweek.com/Preparatory_Outline.html

I also have some early childhood education activites books that I plan on using. We will also do bible stories. I am not going to be very structured because she is only 2.5! We are going to start on Monday, and this weekend will be spent finalizing the lesson plans and getting a good 'school area' ready. I will take a picture when I'm done!
