What!? A blog about us? Hmmm, this could be interesting.

International Fair

Posted in School

Our area has an International Night every year put on by a group called AGAPE.  We are participating for the first time this year.  Taylor's country of choice is Russia.  She chose Russia because she absolutely loves the little Babushka dolls.

Here is what we're doing-

We made a huge painting of St. Basil's Cathedral.  I'll post pictures at another time since it's not quite finished yet.

Taylor drew and colored a picture of Russia's flag.  She made a map with different colors of sugar sprinkles that shows the different terrain in Russia.  The kids had fun with this one because they got to eat a fair share of sprinkles!  On another map, she'll label a few cities and rivers.

We made and colored Babushka dolls from a pattern online, but I don't have the link anymore.  Sorry!  She will write (dictate) a story about the Babuska (which means grandmother).

She made a paper doll dressed as a ballerina and we read I Dreamed I was a Ballerina by Anna Pavlova.  We also read and listened to Peter and the Wolf by Sergei Prokofiev.  (No, I don't have any idea how to pronounce it either!)  She really enjoyed this.  She drew a picture to go with it of the wolf playing a french horn and Peter playing a violin.

We learned about various animals that live in Russia.  The wolf, reindeer, polar bear, and siberian tiger in particular.  We're still working on pictures and books on these.

We're also learning about various buildings and the special architecture used such as onion domes.

Finally, we'll make a Russian meal featuring Moscow Ponchiki and Salad Olivier.

That's about it!  We've been having fun and learning a lot.  I'll post pictures when the big event actually happens in a couple of weeks.
