Pharoah Fruitankumen (part 1)
Continuing our Ancient Egypt theme, we began making our mummies today. I must say, I certainly prefer making the mummies from fruit than the chicken mummy directions that I found. If neither one sound very appealing to you, Jamin has wonderful Barbie/G.I. Joe mummy directions. Our mummy directions came from the Ancient Egypt Discovery Kit by Hands and Hearts.
Here is what we did.
1. We made natron with 26 oz salt and 8 oz baking soda.

2. Use a skewer to poke a hole through the middle of an apple and an orange. (top to bottom)
3. Peel the apple (mummy head). We also carved faces for our mummy.

4. We used wire to hold our mummy head (apple) and our mummy body (orange) together. The wire goes through the hole you made with the skewer.
5. Next you cut a slit from the mummy's belly button around to the spine. Remove the mummy's organs (pulp) with your fingers. By the way- we ate our mummy's organs. Just can't pass up a perfectly good orange.

6. Now the Egyptians would have washed the body with wine to keep it from rotting. We washed our mummy with alcohol.
7. To be sure that the mummy did not smell bad, the Egyptians rubbed sweet-smelling spices all over the body. We used cinnamon. I must say, between the orange and the cinnamon, our mummy was smelling pretty good!

8. We used the natron to make a thin layer for our mummy to lay on. We also filled him with natron and sprinkled some on top. As our mummy dries out, the natron will get damp and we will just replace it with more.
9. After 2 or 3 weeks our mummy should be dry and leathery. Then it will be time for part 2- wrapping the mummy! I'll post again then.
