Jan. 16, 2008 - Passionate Housewives

I was going to reply only to another blogger about this book, but I thought there may be others that are considering purchasing it or may have never heard of it, so I'll post it for the benefit of others as well.

Passionate Houswives Desperate for God

Stacy McDonald and Jennie Chancey

The main thrust of the book is to chip away at the "Christian Feminism" that has crept into the church and Christian thought.  The ideas that what we are doing is somehow inferior to the 'Liberated Working, childless  Woman' and that being created as Helps-meet for our husbands, we have an eternally important role.  They really go after the "I have to have Me time" or Me-ology as they call it, which I very much agree with since it is so easy to default into self-centeredness.

The most convicting points for me were dealing with how I live out my day in front of my children - am I a picture of God's grace to them or a stumbling block?  What is my attitude like towards my husband?  Do I want to be his help in the calling God gives him, or do I have my own personal agenda?  Growing up with very feminist views, this is good for me to hear over and over.

The only parts I think some might not agree with are their views on training and educating daughters.  What should be our focus?  But then again, people may have a problem with it because of unbiblical ideas about the roles of men and women, such as the authors suggest. ?

Either way, I say it's a great book and all wives, mothers and homeschool mom's should read it, if only for the encouragement that what we are doing in the lives of our husbands and children is of utmost importance.

your two cents

I want to read this book ..... but, parts of their theology I don't agree with and I wondered how much that played into the book.

Jan. 17, 2008 - Urgh....

I meant orthopraxy (as in what they believe the "correct practice") of their orthodoxy to be.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but don't they both espouse "quiver-full" & dresses only for women along with the idea that only the head of the household (the Father) should vote? I absolutely could be mistaken, but I was slightly afraid that this would be put forth in the book, as in embracing this type of viewpoint would lead to satisfaction and joy in the home.

Edit:

Urgh. I just realized that ummm .... these might be your convictions, too. Please forgive me if they are! It wasn't my intention to offend you or to put you on the defense.

Jan. 17, 2008 - Don't like the title

I don't like the similarity of the title to a current TV show that has every appearance of being something I'm not interested in. I know this book is totally different, but I have trouble with the title.

I think that is exactly why they chose that title, because that show is the absolute antithesis of everything that they stand for and believe that the scriptures teach about being a woman, a wife and a mother. I hope the title doesn't scare you off for good. The book has alot to offer.

You know, I do want to read that book.

Sigh. It's been a long journey for me. I was once all those things in my fundamentalist days.

I embraced them, not for the reasons you gave on my blog, but for all the wrong reasons. Ugh. I was so judgmental and critical. Basically the type of women that God says it's better to live on a corner of a roof than with.

But after seeing Jane Eyre, I've been missing my dresses and dressing femininely. :-) Silly reason, I know.

I still struggle with the issue of birth control.

Sigh.

Always Reforming,

Thank you for your review of this book. I take a couple of classes each semester at the local college and we often have to introduce ourselves and tell a bit about ourselves. I usually tell everyone I'm a reformed feminist, lol! I thinks just might be the perfect book for me.
