New Neighbors - Jul. 15, 2009

We got new neighbors a couple of weeks ago. We don’t see them much, but, wow, they’re noisy, and I think I need to keep a close eye on my chickens! Meet a couple of my new neighbors.
These birds seemed to have taken up residence in some trees in a neighboring yard. I actually had to go around the block to get a good picture of them. That’s when I realized that the yard they were enjoying was up for sale. No one to bother them, except us nosey, picture-taking neighbors, that is. I’ll admit that once I get past the fact that they’re just waiting for their chance to fly off with one of my chickens, they are beautiful birds. However, they are annoying! We’re pretty sure there’s at least three, maybe four of them, and they talk to each other all day long. Now, I love hearing birds singing and chattering in the trees, but this is not singing. Imagine a young teenage girl talking excitedly to her BFF two doors down without the aid of any electronic communication. You know that note that only excited teenage girls can hit? The one that makes all the dogs in the neighbors run for cover? Well, that’s the only note these birds know, and they talk to each other constantly. I am grateful for the hundred yards between us.
We’ve been having a difficult time narrowing down exactly what kind of hawk they are. Every time we think we’ve figured it out, something isn’t quite right. Either its sound is a bit off or its usual habitat is way off. Maybe someone visiting can help me out here. All I do know is that I need to protect my chickens, and I can’t shoot hawks with a BB gun. On the plus side, I have noticed fewer squirrels stealing our tomatoes and fewer rodents sneaking into the coop to steal chicken feed.
Thanks for stopping by! Care to take a walk with me to meet the neighbors up close and personal? They hide very well in the trees so we’ll need to bring my expert bird spotter, Jared. He spots them quick, which is great since they spook easily.
