Earlier this week in the capital city of Quito a sinkhole was created partly as a result of all the rain our country is getting these days. It is a rather large sinkhole right in the middle of a major "cloverleaf" interchange. As you can imagine it's caused major traffic issues in a city that already has traffic issues! Schools have been closed for the past couple of days to help out with the traffic.
I'm posting some pictures and a video of it. I found the video on You Tube so it's something that someone here put together. I do have to warn you that the music is a bit dramatic!
Now that's a big hole!
When we moved to FL a couple years ago, a sinkhole opened up around the corner from us. It wasn't as deep as this, but it took out a 4 lane road.
Thanks for sharing!
My family and I just got back from Quito today. We were on a church mission trip and our bus crossed that spot about 2 hours before the sinkhole opened. To say that traffic was snarled is an understatement.
A half hour trip across the city took about 2 hours.
Glad to be back in the USA,we will miss our new friends in Ecuador.
I think there were people hurt but I don't know if anyone was killed. I've had trouble finding out that information since it isn't front page news anymore.
I don't really know how sinkholes are formed, but I know it was helped along by all the rain we have gotten. Fortunately, the rains are finally starting to abate somewhat.
Hello to you, Linda
I was going to put a comment on your blog about the Huge Sink Hole and the photos and video, but I don't think it took. Here's what I wanted to comment:
The video and post itself were very interesting. Thank you for commenting on our blog, The Perpetual Vacationers http://wendellmaedeantravelblog.blogspot.com/
Since we recently made Lower Alabama our "base." We still have a good bit of settling in to do, so we're not putting much on our blogs for now. We did go to another Fest today, the Strawberry Fest in Loxley. It definitely was a full-fledged fest that lasted both Saturday and Sunday. Today the weather was somewhat cool and not a cloud, except for two little lost ones, which must have missed the trip when most of the other clouds moved out. That should have made for good photos, but I was disappointed in one in particular. Three of the Dogwood Trail Maids were there. For a good photo of them, go to http://www.beautifulfairhope.com/index.php?action=display&filename=080321.jpg I asked them if they had been at the Fairhope Easter Sunrise Service, and they said they were. I was not there, but I had seen this photo http://www.fairhopechristianchurch.org
OH MY!! That is incredible!!! At first I thought you were just showing pictures of the artistic landscape...that is one major sink whole...hope no one was in that spot when it sunk.?.
I'm almost speechless...wow.
