Goals

Posted in Main Page
Here's the new debate topic:

When setting goals for ourselves should we set goals that we know are possible with work or should we set goals that seem impossible?

Pick a side and let the war of words begin!

Alex, I didn't say goals that are totally IMPOSSIBLE, just goals we're not sure we can get.

I'm sorry, Alex, but that post made me smile. :-) It's completely this year's LD debate. Seriously, I've used almost that exact same phrasing! I especially used it for my affirmative which I wrote for Regionals (and I loved it very much). My value was Faith. Here's a quote: "The idealist pursues the impractical goals with faith that it can be accomplished." I really think that you would love LD if you tried it. :-) And I'd always be happy to help in anyway I could.

I honestly don't think that the question you posed has to be either/or. I think you should have both kinds of goals. Ultimately, my highest goal is to be like Jesus which I know is not possible here on earth, but I have smaller goals that I know are possible to achieve (through God) which draw me closer to my ultimate goal. These smaller goals include things like using using my time more effectively in this thing, or being more patient in that area, or serve someone by doing that thing. I fail a lot in my goals, just as we all do, but failure is when we learn that most, and when we feel God's grace surround us and pick us up.

Yep, I would have to agree with Christina. As Christians we are called to "be perfect therefore, as your heavenly father is perfect" (Mathew 5:48) and yet that is impossible, because we are fallen and sinful. So as Christians we are called to set an impossible goal. Or rather, one we won't reach, because of our sin, for God will not ask us to do something which is impossible.

On a practical side, it can depend on your personality. If you get stressed by failure, or thrive on challenges, your answer will differ. As Christina said in her comment, it's not either/or.

If we're trying to accomplish a practical achievement (do 6 hours of school a day, every school-day for instance) then setting an impossible goal might be down heartening. But if you had a overall vision to inspire you (which might be impossible) and then smaller goals to reach, doing it bit by bit, I think that would be a very good way to set goals.

It depends on your personality and how you handle stress, deadlines and the like; and on the situation. I think a compromise of having a very high "vision" type goal, reached by many short, easy goals would often be a good goal-setting method.

It's great to see a blogger talking about quality issues and getting others to talk about them as well. Well done Turumbar. Maybe we should call this a discussion, instead of a debate, which encourages argumentativeness? "But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels about the law, because these are unprofitable and useless." Titus 3:9.

Goals tha we don't know we can reach are a great idea. I think most of us do that as we try to be just like christ . Actually We know we cannot reach that goal be we still strive. However small goals also help us to try to reach goals very out of reach. I think on physical matter ei(chores, projects) and intellectual (college and school) YOU should set small goal that help you get to your bigger ones. Atleast for me if I break it into smaller goal I feel less overwhelmed

On my way to getting my Eagle Scout I larned a lot about goals. I belive that niether choice is absolutly corect. Infact it is imposible to acheive very large and seemingly imposible goals without having small goals.

For instance lets say I want to go to the moon. This would be a magnificently large and almost imposible goal. Obviously, if that is as far as you go you will never achive this goal. you have to break this large goal into smaller goals. Like geting into NASA as an as a pilot. To achieve this goal you must become a piolate in the U.S. Air Foce. And befor that you need to be an oficer in the Air Force. Before that even is the small goal of geting good grades in college and the this takes you to the very small goal of geting an A on one paper.

There for large goals are built from an organized group of small goals as houses ar built from neat layers of brick and wood. In the same way you cannot just place a large house on a plot of land you cannot just get almoast imposible large goals without building up numerous small goal.

Small goals without a grand, over all, life changing goal are useless. They will be disorganized and in general produce little of that is of much value.

Thus, both goals are necesary for success in any part of life. As the posts before this say our ultimate goal is to become like Christ. This is a goal which we work toward through small goals such as not lieing, not stealing, respecting our parents, and being corteous and kind to others.

May Christ bless you all.
