School Is Out

Hurrah - School Is Out!!!  No more teacher's dirty looks.(Hey, wait  I'm the teacher.)  Well we have finished our first year of homeschooling.  Not so bad - considering we're teaching teenage young man that's not an academic intellect.  We had some bumps and stumbles along the way.  Discovered some things that worked and some that didn't.  We gave him his lesson plan for the day and let him work at his own pace.  This was okay for some subjects.  Math - he needs the one on one.  And when ever the assignment is to read and answer questions(forget the reading) he would just skim and answer the questions with what he hurriedly found.

My son is not a reader.  Next year he will read the pages with us.  We'll have to crack the whip a little harder next year.  Do you have a child that doesn't like to read?  What things have you done(tried) to get them to open a book and read for school and pleasure?  We have tried getting him books on subjects that he's interested in - to no avail.

We don't want him to think of reading as a punishment but it does need to be encouraged.  If you have any suggestions please comment and let us know.

I saw the TinTin books in the Timberdoodle catalog. They are comic books but they have an amazing variety of scientific, historical, etc information in them. Recommended for reluctant readers. I would love to see them -- I have a very faint recollection of TinTin from my little girl days in France. :o) See you tomorrow.
