For the Love of Parent Teaching

Aug. 15, 2008 - There was once a chance I didn't take

(I love writing and expressing myself. I found this writing prompt and wanted to try it because I like blogging and writing and sometimes I am stumped and don't know what to write about)

The title is called... There was once a chance I didn't take... Here goes...

I was 19 years old and had completed my first year of college. Because I was in Civil Air Patrol, I became fascinated with the military and had dreams and aspirations of going into the military to hopefully become an officer and enjoy a career until retirement.

While in college, I took one year of Air Force ROTC and enoyed it thoroughly, in fact, so much so that it was the only class that I got an A in. I ended up not returning to that particular University the following year because of out-of-state tuition costs.

One day, while sitting in my parents' basement, my stepfather told me to talk to a friend of his that was a Colonel in the Air Force. He asked me a few questions and we talked and he told me that if I was interested in going to the Air Force Academy, he could help me get in there by way of going to the Air Force Prep School. I was like, HUH?! He said that he had friends there that could help me get in. Well, I asked him one question and that changed everything. I asked if you had to know how to swim. He explained to me that the Academy trained pilots and that  I could go to the Y and take classes and blah blah  blah. Well, needless  to say, I  didn't even bother with that.  I did, however,  go in to the Air Force enlisted. But, hey, not to worry, I got a husband and a son out of the deal.  Not bad, two for one!

Sometimes I do wonder what would have become of that other decision but I know for me, that God knew what was best. I had that chance, but I'm glad that I didn't risk it when I see what I have now. I'm not one that wants the pie in the sky, simplicity is a blessing and I thank God everyday for the decisions that I've made in my life.

Aug. 15, 2008 - Never Look Back!

Posted by Donalacasa

Every time I think of the coulda, woulda, shouldas, I think of Lot's wife. We can get stuck sometimes looking back. My favorite Robert Frost poem says,

"I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference."

We spend 12 beautiful years overseas at Lajes, Rhein Main, and Kadena. The whole country changed while we were outside of the country, but the Air Force gave us an adventurous life. No regrets!
