The Only Problem....
Posted in Tapestry of Grace
with Tapestry is when I spend too much time with my bowl and not enough time filing work. I finally forced myself to tackle that last week. This was a portion of Sarah's work since January. The girls insisted on a picture.

You are really doing so much with them! Great job! We are slackers, and do the lapbooks from TOG, chosen reading assignments and lots of books on the subject that we then write book reports on. Kudos to you on the great printables and all the outlining, well-trained mind style.

I somehow don't think that Langhaven and slackers belong in the same paragragh! You might notice the lack of dough maps in our school room... :)
I'm a history nut - and have made a hobby out of stretching minds.

Well, how inspiring!!!
I've been looking at TOG for a couple of years and I thought that I'd wait until 5th grade to start it...but looking at your girl's work makes me want to rush out and get it.
My oldest is 8 (3rd grade) and we've really done no formal written narrations...lots of oral...but I'm not sure how to make the transition. And it's really bugging me, because I'd like to MAKE that transition, but feel woefully inadequate...
I have an 8 (3rd), 5 (k-ish) and almost 3 year old...what do you think...can I squeeze the 8 and 5 together or is it too much on the kinder-set...???
Thanks so much for posting and the pictures...it really helps me think about what I'm looking at.

The transition from narration to summary is tricky. I start by having my girls copy the narrations I've written down for them. Once they're able to write those neatly and with ease, I start giving them a summary template. I make boxes on a piece of paper that say, in order, WHO, WHERE, WHAT, WHAT ELSE, (Possibly WHY or CONCLUSION depending on how they're doing). I have them fill in the boxes first, hopefully with sentences. Then, they copy their writing with corrections until it's neatly done without errors. After a few months of that, they've been able to write their own summaries without the template.
