Four of a Kind

Mar. 26, 2009 - Drama and trauma

We had a crisis of epic proportions in our family today! Tears were shed, feeling were hurt, marriages were in turmoil...and I had to keep a straight face through it all.

Robbie and Molly have an ongoing "story" where they play they are married and have several children (assorted baby dolls, etc). Much of what they do--church, vacation, school, and so on--mirrors our own family life. It's real cute.

Well, today, right before lunch, Robbie made the grand announcement that he had married Katie. He gave her a beaded necklace he had made, took her by the hand and proudly paraded her around the house until they got to their "car" (a living-room chair).

Molly caught wind of what was going on (it was pretty hard to miss!) and not-at-all gently reminded Robbie, "You're already married to ME!"

"I forgot..." Robbie sheepishly admitted.

Now insanely jealous, Molly stormed, "What about all those KIDS we've got?!"

Feb. 24, 2009 - Fairies

This evening Molly was pondering how a little dolly of hers had mysteriously re-appeared recently, after it had been missing for a long time.

"Maybe fairies brought it back," I suggested, alluding to a scene in the Tinkerbell movie she likes. Then, feeling a pang of guilt, I decided to 'fess up. "Or maybe," I continued, "your mother thought you didn't play with it anymore and packed it away, and then realized you wanted it back and brought it out again."

"That's not right," she said. I was pretty sure she meant that I was wrong when I thought she didn't want the doll anymore, but I asked anyways, "Why?"

"It had to be fairies!" she declared.

Feb. 16, 2009 - Congratulations, it's a...

Auntie Karen gave each of the kids a little stuffed animal for Valentine's Day on Saturday. Joey asked Glenn to find his puppy's name.

"Made in China..." Glenn began, ruffling through the tags.

"Manufactured for Wal-Mart..." he continuted. "One hundred percent polyester..."

"My puppy's a GIRL!" Joey joyously proclaimed.

(Get it? POLLY ESTHER?!)

Dec. 23, 2008 - Snow ice cream

When live gives you lemons, do you:
A) make lemonade;
B) make grape juice, then sit back and let the world wonder how you did it, or
C) throw them back and ask for chocolate!

If you answered "A", you may be able to relate to what I do when we get more than 5 inches of snow: I make snow ice cream! Here's how:

Collect 4-5 cups of freshly fallen, clean snow in a bowl. Sprinkle in 1/2 cup confectioner's sugar. Mix 1/4 teaspoon vanilla, peppermint, or flavor-of-your-choice extract into 1 cup milk. Pour milk mixture into snow mixture and stir until slushy. "Decorate" with colored sugar, if desired. Makes about 4-6 servings. Yummy!

Dec. 23, 2008 - Lyrical Joey

For Awana, Molly and Robbie are learning to recite the names of the books of the Old Testament. Joey overheard and made up lyrics to a new song:

"Give my lunch to Ob-a-di-ah! Give my lunch to Ob-a-di-ah!"

Earlier in the week, we had to tell him:

"No, Joey, it's not 'WRECK the halls,' it's 'DECK the halls'!"

Dec. 17, 2008 - Invoking the name of...WHO??

The other morning Molly was upset about the tangles while I was brushing her hair. She howled,  "What in the name of Mother Goose are you doing to me?"

Dec. 13, 2008 - An enchanting mystery

I had been refilling and reusing a cardboard Disney "Princesses" Kleenex box in the girls' room. I even rigged it with tape so it was easy to re-open and re-close. But one day last week it mysteriously disappeared. I immediately turned to my two top suspects: Robbie and Joey.

During interrogation, Joey confessed that he had crumpled up the box and placed it in a trash can.

"Pink enchanted garbage," he informed me!

Oct. 29, 2008 - Trick or Treat

A conversation between Joey and his Dada, as the kids were getting their costumes on Sunday afternoon to go Trick-or-Treating:

JOEY: "Why do we hafta go Trick-or-Treat?"

DADA: (getting ready to explain it's just a fun, extra thing we do) "We don't have to go Trick-or-Treat..."

JOEY: (indignant) "I DO hafta go Trick-or-Treat!"

Aah, the logic of  a four-year-old...

Oct. 24, 2008 - My clock stopped ticking (no, not THAT one)

Right around the time Glenn and I got married, his mom gave us a clock. It may have been a shower gift, or a birthday or Christmas gift; I honestly don't exactly remember. It wasn't a remarkable clock. It had a wood frame and a plastic dome over the face, and ran on a single AA battery. It has marked every passing moment in all 7 places we've called "home" over the past 17-plus years. Our family, the furniture, the appliances--even the very place we put it all--have all changed, but that clock has remained a constant...until today.

It was kind of a rough day. Besides the usual hustle-and-bustle, our basement floor drain "burped" for the second time in a week, and the plumber's visit, while timely and certainly necessary and appreciated, completely disrupted the afternoon. ("Mama! Thewe's a big TWUCK in the dwiveway!") We finally finished history at about 5:00.

By the time we got the kids tucked in and I could finally finish up cleaning up the kitchen, I was feeling overwhelmed by the never-ending day-to-day and week-to-week grind of cooking and cleaning and laundry and school and homework...not to mention the extra stuff we've been wanting to do, like assemble the bookshelves in the den so we can move the schoolroom into there, and stain and finish the little kids'-size table we have in the kitchen...and fix the clock. I found myself in tears. Of course, Glenn noticed.

"Is this about the clock?" he asked.

"NO!" I said. It totally wasn't...but it totally was.

We've been studying the book of Revelation at church, and how the Earth is not our "forever home". Amen! and Hallelujah! Isn't it ironic that I'm sentimentally attached to a CLOCK?

Sep. 27, 2008 - Our first broken bone

Well, it was bound to happen...Molly has the first broken bone among the Wardius siblings. She fell off the ladder of the swing set last evening and broke a bone in her wrist.

She's handling the whole situation very well. We had to spend a lo-o-o-o-o-o-o-ong time in the hospital waiting room, and then just as lo-o-o-o-o-o-o-ong a time in the exam room of the ER (it was a busy night), and we skipped dinner besides (and once she was triaged, she wasn't allowed to eat), and she only cried when the doctor confirmed that she had broken a bone and would need a cast!

She has a splint on now. We have to take her to an orthopedist during the week to get her cast (I'm sure she'll choose pink). We're thankful the weather is supposed to turn cooler tomorrow, and the pool is coming down--it would have been hard to keep her out of there.
