Open House!
Less Of Me~More Of Him is hosting a Homeschool Open House on her blog! I thought this would be a great way to show everyone a glimpse of what homeschooling is like here in OUR home.

First, in case this is your first time visiting my blog....let me introduce our family!
My name is Michelle. I have been married to my wonderful husband, Paul, for 12 years. We have four wonderful blessings...Julie (9), Joseph (7), Katie-Noel (4) and Annabelle (2).
We live in the great state of Wisconsin, and we are just beginning our 2nd year of homeschooling. (Julie will be in 4th grade, Joseph in 2nd, and Katie in Pre-K)
We don't really follow a strict schedule, so there really isn't a 'typical' day here...but I guess MOST school days go something like this......
7-9am - Wake up, wash-up, eat breakfast
10-12pm - Bible, Math, Language arts, Latin
12-1pm - Lunch and break
1-3pm - Science, History, Reading, Art/Music
4pm - Practice piano (older kids)
5pm - Daddy home = family time
(We guard our family time very closely! The kids are not in many activities that would force us to rush around to different locations and rob us of this precious time together.)
We are Eclectic homeschoolers and use a variety of different materials methods. In addition to workbooks and text books, we also incorporate unit studies, copywork, and notebooking.
Our 2007-2008 Curriculum:
Julie (4th Grade)
Christian Light Education (CLE) Math
CLE Language Arts
CLE Reading
Rod & Staff Science
Writing 4 (Kelley Wingate Publications)
Scholastic - Success With Maps 4
Power Glide - Jr. Latin
Joseph (2nd Grade)
Saxon Math
CLE - Language Arts
CLE - Science
CLE - I Can Write (penmanship)
Pathways (Reading)
Scholastic - Success with Maps 2
Power Glide - Jr. Latin
TOGETHER:
-History - Story Of The World - Vol 1.
-Bible - "Leading Little Ones to God" and
"The Memory Bible" (memory verses in stories & songs on CD's)
-FIAR (whenever we feel like a break from our regular curriculum)
For Katie (Pre-K)
- "Get Ready For Kindergarten" (a big comprehensive workbook)
- "Little Lambs" (preschool Bible curriculum)
- "Letter of the Week" (NOT the website, but a book by "Mailbox" publications with several different reproducibles and activities)
-When she is ready for it I will start her on Rod & Staff's ABC's program.
(In addition to the above, the older 2 children will both be taking piano lessons, and acrobatics, and will attend Pioneers and Sunday school. We will also be doing our local homeschool co-op in the Spring.)
Where do we 'do school' at our house?...........
Well.....A lot of our reading is done on the couch - snuggling up together, but the kids are allowed to read wherever they want, (as long as they get it done and aren't too distracted.) It wouldn't be unusual to see them reading: at their desks, on the couch, in the rocking chair, on the floor, lying on their beds, or even sitting at the picnic table outside.
We do Bible, history, art and science experiments all together - seated around our dining room table. (This is why our table is covered with a cheap vinyl table cloth, and the kids sit on folding chairs!) It might not be 'fancy' but it's functional! We get involved, and we get MESSY! That's how learning happens! (The cabinet in the corner holds homeschool books AND cookbooks!)
Our family room is our main 'classroom.' Julie and Joseph each have their own personal workspace here, and this is also where we have the computers.
I like it because I can work or play online while the kids are doing school, and yet I'm right there if they need me!
(Joseph's desk)

(Julie's desk...plus the computer)

(Our 'built-in' above the fireplace. I store our math manipulatives here, plus several games/puzzles/toys to entertain the toddlers while the older kids are working.)

So, that's our 'school' in a nut-shell!
Thanks for visiting, and be sure to stop back in a couple of weeks (when we officially start) for progress reports. I'm sure we'll have all kinds of fun photos of our "Story of the World" adventures!
