Crazy quilts

In honor of our book this week, we have been learning about the art of quilting.
(Now, I apologize to all of the "real' quilters out there.....Honestly, this was MY first attempt at quilting too, so I probably made a million mistakes!)

Before we even started sewing, we first learned about the geometric patterns and tessellations that quilts contain.   I found this neat website where you can print and  color different quilt patterns.  (My kids had a blast with these!)  We also used pattern blocks to make some designs of our own.

Julie's

and Joseph's

(Wouldn't those be pretty quilts?!!!)

Then, I let the kids dig through my own box of fabric scraps.  I told them to chose 9 squares/patches of whatever they wanted  (....and they came up with some very "creative" combinations!)

We spent the last two days cutting, pinning, sewing and tying!
Believe it or not...they actually did most of the sewing themselves!!!

And here are their finished quilts!

And Joseph

Oh...and I actually made it through the book without crying today!

Hi Michelle, thank you for stopping by! I am SO impressed with the quilt! I have never tried it so yours looks perfect to me. I've always wanted to try it though. Neat tessellations site too, that is something we do in computer programs to make neat repeating backgrounds.

Re: award button. Yes I can share! Or, would you like one that matches your blog more? Let me know :)

Those quilts look great! I love the patterns with the blocks, too. I'm so impressed you're still doing school this week! We're taking off a few weeks here with travel and everything.

What great quilts. They both did an awesome job. My mom makes quilts out of our old t-shirts, I cry when I look at some of the old t-shirt from when ds was little.

I had to laugh at the whole crying thing, because I am the same way. I also cried reading The Rag Coat! The kids did a great job on the quilts. I want my daughter to learn how to sew and so do I. I wish we had a sewing machine. Thanks for your kind words on my blog. I switched to blogspot so I can post more pictures without having to upload to flickr. Hope you and your family have a very Blessed Christmas!
