December 3, 2009 - uhh, thanks...

So the kind(?) people at Delia's [the amazing clothing company] decided that it would be a super-nice(?) thing to put me on the Teen Vogue mailing list.

Now, I admit, I am a person who is, to an extent, a fan of Being Fashionable. And there are some outfits & accessories in this magazine that I really would like (if I had $400-some lying around to buy dresses with, that is).

But quite a lot of this stuff, especially the more runway / less Target items, are so ugly. It's not fashion, it's more like anti-fashion.

And there's about 637 perfume ads in there, so it smells kind of like walking through the cosmetics department at Parisian, only condensed into one small magazine, so it kind of is stinking up my entire living room right now.

But, anyways. HAPPY STUFF NOW.

I just got this book-- Crobots, by Nelly Pailloux. Crobots = crocheted robots.

(photos courtesy Andrews McMeel Publishing & amazon.com-- meaning these aren't mine ;D)

Did you just die of cuteness? I almost did, but then I stopped myself so that I crochet make them for myself.

RESULTS TO BE THRUST UPON MY INDULGENT READERS SOON.

(all-caps for no reason other than it is fun.)

Dec. 3, 2009 - Heeeeeyo!!

Today was really fun, because I had my friend over. We watched Spiderman 3! It's one of my favorite movies, we were making fun of Peter, because he acts like such a dope. xDD  My friend was                 surprised that I didn't like Harry..haha!! It was funny.  ^^

When we woke up we went to go get our breakfast, my least favorite meal! :P    After we ate, we did some school then played a game with a boy that comes over every week! ^^ It was fun!

Itai...yesterday I slammed my foot in the door!! Then on Sunday, I fell flat on my face! Hahaha, the lady that saw me fall thought I was dead, because I was just laying there and sighed then started                  laughing, which she thought I was crying. lol Poor lady.

I am told I'm getting bubble wrap for Christmas, lol because I get hurt so much!! xD So funny!

All for now!!! :D Bye~bye!

November 17, 2009 - Homemade Christmas #1: Shutterfly Scrapbook

A Homemade Christmas at SimplyVintagegirl.com

One really fun homemade gift to receive is a scrapbook. I love going through our old scrapbooks, looking at how much things have changed, how much things are the same... how really awful fashion was in the late nineties.

However, this is a really time-consuming project on the gift maker's part. A scrapbook seems like the perfect gift for that someone on your list, but, snap, there's only about a month to make it, and with all the other things you've got to do... well, that idea's going to get shoved to the bottom of the proverbial sock drawer.

Enter the Shutterfly photobook.

I've made quite a few of these, and while it's not quite the same as scrapbooking, the result is always beautiful and it's so simple to do.

You basically just sign up, upload your pictures, put them in the book, order it, and in a couple weeks there's this gorgeous, glossy book on your front stoop.

Of course, if you're one of those meticulous people like myself, you may want to do more, and you can! You can choose from bajillions of backgrounds, fonts, borders & layouts.

I've made a few of these for friends moving out of state (or, in one case, to another country). They're a great way to put all those memories together in a neat little package.

And, you know, what else are you going to do with such, erm, gorgeous pictures like this?

(I guess this is sort of a borderline-homemade gift, but it's early yet. The insane craftiness is on its way.)

November 13, 2009 - Duncan & Ella Hope

Firstly, thanks for all your wonderful name suggestions for my little guy! In a sudden burst of creativity, I came up with one on my own-- Duncan. Named partially for my favorite character from Monarch of the Glen, and partially because its meaning is "brown fighter," and while I can't picture this Snorgenwoffle (more on that later) being much of a "fighter," he is brown.

I've also decided (with help from my friend Lucy) that this "breed" of amigurumi are called Snorgenwoffles. They like to sail around in little cardboard boats and are really fond of Motown music, especially the Supremes and the Jackson 5.

Now, if there's one thing I can't stand is a lonely softie, so...

...this is Ella Hope.

She's taller, but she's actually Duncan's little sister. She would like to be a really famous YouTube singer like Nataly Dawn or maybe even Julia Nunes, but she doesn't have hands, so she can't work the webcam.

Also, if you're wondering about the tattoo, A) it's pen, and B) today's the third annual To Write Love on Her Arms day. TWLOHA is a non-profit movement dedicated to presenting hope and finding help for people struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury and suicide. TWLOHA exists to encourage, inform, inspire and also to invest directly into treatment and recovery. Check out their site here.

I personally don't struggle with these things, but what these people do is amazing, and I think we all need to support it.

So, sometime this weekend or in the coming week, write love on your arms. You're asking for a question-- "Why's love written on your arms?" Tell them the story & spread some hope.

Nov. 10, 2009 - Above Rubies Retreat

This past weekend I had the pleasure of attending an Above Rubies Retreat in Hardin, Kentucky. It was my first Above Rubies Retreat that I've attended. I've received the Above Rubies Magazine for years and I was thrilled to finally get to meet Nancy Campbell and her daughter Pearl, along with Pearl's daughter, Meadow. I've been dealing  with some "things" lately and I am SOOOO happy that I attended. My dear friend Tammy T. attended the Retreat with me. On the last day of the Retreat it was "Share Testimony" time. A few of the ladies got up and shared what The Lord had ministered to them during the Retreat. I got up and began to share what I call my "Nightmare Story" on the day that My Elgin was killed by a drunk driver. It's ALWAYS a very emotional time for me whenever I share about that HORRIBLE day that My Elgin was killed. I think there were only two other ladies there that was "close" to my age, and I was the only Widow in attendance. All of the ladies there looked to be under the age of about 30-35, and none of them have experienced the lost of a husband before. After telling my "Nightmare Story" numerous ladies came to me and thanked me for sharing my "Nightmare",  that my Story challenged them to put more of an effort to let their husbands know just how much they are loved. Even Nancy Campbell told me that my Story challenged her and that my Testimony was the most Inspirational lesson taught at the Retreat. I always said, That if God allowed me to go through this "Nightmare" to be able to help other ladies to "Love" their husbands while they still can, then I will be that willing vessel. I pray that each of you who reads my entry will be inspired to Love Your Husband.

October 29, 2009 - the Hippie Apron.

For lack of a better name.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Sewed this guy up this afternoon. Thought it was cute. And even though I think the retail stores are done reliving Woodstock, I still like me some tie-dye. Wish I could say I'd dyed this myself, but it's actually a scrap I found in my drawer and decided to use.

This is based on the fantabulatic Amy Karol's Vintage Apron pattern from Bend the Rules Sewing, the same pattern I used for this guy a while back (is it strange to refer to aprons as guys?).

I am a fan of the half-apron. Simple enough that my mind can wander as I make it, easy enough to make in under an hour, and still you wind up with something elegant (or psychedelic) in the end.
