Rethinking things

Here it is 2009. I am back to thinking about homeschooling. This time its my oldest, who is now in 6th grade. I do NOT like the attitudes of the children he goes to school with or the "socialization" he is receiving. Our neighbor across the street has offered to show me her Abeka Academy DVD's. I think I will take her up on this.

Since my last post (back in 2007) my dd has not only learned to read, but reads above grade level. Being a military family, we have moved since I started this blog, so I am off to update a few things.

Blessings

I give up

Well, this year has clinched it. I am not cut out for homeschooling. I not only didn't succeed in teaching dd to read, I didn't even get her to complete work on most days. We definitely have obedience issues, but we also have lazy mom, and inconsistent mom as well. It isn't always fun to look in the mirror at oneself. Sometimes we don't like what we see.

Dd will start Kindergarten at the local public school Aug 3 with her older brother (now in 5th grade)

This will be my last entry, since I don't feel I belong on a homeschool blog when I have given up on homeschooling.

Blessings to all you who have the ability and patience to homeschool. My hat is off to you. You have my utmost respect and admiration.

I am not off the hook, however, on teaching scripture to my children. This summer will be easy since I have them home all day. During the school year I suppose I will have to create a study time for them to learn scripture. I would love to have them do it before school, but the bus comes at 6:40am. Looks like it will be additional "homework" once the school year starts.

Blessings to you and yours

Reading in 2007

Before Christmas I started a new book with my daughter.

Taking the Mystery out of Teaching Reading in 6 Easy  Steps
by Gail Busby

We will be digging in to this and learning the sounds the letters and letter-blends make now that the holidays are over.

For my dd and ds2 we will also be working on sitting quietly while being read to and just sitting quietly when its required. (ie, church) We will also work on memorizing scripture verses.

Ds1 still attends public school (dh request) but at home we will be studying US Presidents and memorizing books of the Bible and actually learning the memory verses.

I do blog at my Xanga site more often, but will be updating here too.

Thankfulness tree

Here is an idea I borrowed from a friend of mine. Next year for Thanksgiving, we will be making a Thankfulness tree.

Take a large stick with several branches on it. Trim to desired size. Place in bucket/flower pot containing florist foam. Cut leaf shapes out of construction paper in orange, brown, yellow, and other fall colors. On each leaf write something that your family is thankful for. I plan to also include scripture passages. Stand back and admire your work. :)

Teaching the TRIVIUM

Hi. Long time no post. :) I am keeping my other blog (xanga) updated more than this one.

We are still working with dd at home. This week I am wanting to focus on fall leaves. Continuing alphabet practice as well.

I just received the book Teaching the Trivium. You will have to copy and paste, I still can't get the links right.

 www.triviumpursuit.com

I haven't started it yet, (just came today). Have any of you read it? Comments? I will post my review here when I have completed it.

Have a blessed day

Goals and plans

Someone asked me what my goals and plans are for homeschooling and afterschooling my children. I was't able to give a well put together answer. What I want to do is teach dd the basics and how to read. With ds I want to supplement what he learns in public school and give him the Bible learning he won't receive there. With the youngest, being only 13mo, I hope he learns by "osmosis". In other words, hearing the stories, music, etc and just being around us when we learn.

I want to take my children's interests and gifts and use those to help them learn and grow. I am not sure if that is a certian "style" or not. Here is an example. My ds is intersted in science - the how's and why's things work. He also likes nature. He would love to get a nature guide, take a hike, and then I can have him journal what we found/saw on the hike. Maybe even do rubbings of things in the journal pages. To me, that would cover daily exercise, science, and writing all in one shot. Much more pleasant to him than doing workbooks and copying from textbooks. Is that a style? I guess I will find out.

Looks like its homeschool for Pre-K

We have found a wonderful church in our new state that has many large families and many homeschool families. My dh is much more open now to me teaching dd her basics. (letters, sounds, early reading, math, etc) after talking to the men from church. In fact, he gave dd the choice between going to school (a pre-k program) or gymnastics. I think he was a little suprised when she chose gymnastics. lol Our oldest ds will still go to the local public school. He keeps asking to be homeschooled, but I think its because he is nervous about starting a new school in a new town. I won't push that issue.

For summer fun while dh is on leave we have been doing things like going to story time at the local library. Today we went geocaching. If you have never heard of it, I will try to explain.  Geocaching uses GPS devices to find hidden objects on grid coordinates. The searcher finds a "cache" (pronounced like Cash) and records finding it in a notebook. There are usually trinkets in the box. You are allowed to take one thing out, as long as you put one in. McDonald's toys are a popular item to leave. Probably not the best explanation, but you get the idea. www.geocaching.com is a great place to learn more.

For today's trip we went on a boyscout trail through the woods to find the cache. They marked the local trees and plants of interest so I used that as "science and geography time". Plus we got PE in with the mile or so walk through the woods. Who says school is out for the summer? The kids had fun and didn't even realize they were learning something .

I would love to have them learn this way all year long. :)

Supplemental schooling

What do I mean by supplemental schooling? Just that. Supplementing. My dh wants our children to go to public school. He was lucky and had a good one. So I supplement what they learn after school, on weekends and holidays. Its not the ideal situation in my book, but that's life for now.

Oldest Ds will be entering 4th grade in the fall. The goals this summer are to work on his math and reading skills. With a little science thrown in for fun :) (He loves science)

Dd is only 4 and she will miss the cutoff for Kindergarten next fall in our new state. I am supposed to be finding a preschool for her that isn't to expensive. I am more concerned with her actually learning something. I am still looking for that "perfect" preschool. Meanwhile this summer I will be working with her at home. :)

ds2 has just turned a year old. He doesn't do much "school" at all. He does love music though, so in addition to reading him stories, we will be doing some songs. :)

Now to see how much of that gets done! Be blessed,
