Hi! Welcome to Homeschool Blogger and to homeschooling! I think you did the right thing. My son is in 5th grade and he's still not allowed to use a calculator for his work. I feel strongly that they need to learn the basics. Calculators should be saved for higher levels of math.
Welcome to HSB. You have a great resource in your sister. My children (now 31 and 29) were the same age your children are when we began homeschooling. At the time we lived in DC and the laws said I couldn't do what I was doing. But I did it anyway. It is better to obey God than man, and worked on changing laws. Your comment didn't surprise me. I have always found non-believers more supportive. Christians that are not homeschooling tend to think you are telling them your walk is closer to the Lord then theirs (even though that is not what you are saying). As for reactions, we were a military family that lived far from my family. They would ask, "How are the kids doing in school?" And I would say, "Great!" I home schooled for six year and wrote a book for homeschoolers before my dad knew I was homeschooling! The Lord will lead you and where He leads you there is great peace, no matter what others say.
Because of Jesus, Bubbebobbie
PS My dad did come around, he loved that he could see my children for vacation when it was a good time instead of a holiday and is now having my homeschooled grandchildren fly out to his ranch. I am now hearld as the mom that did things right!
