Aug. 22, 2007 - Among the tomato plants

Hey I found something interesting to blog!  Well, I think it is interesting anyways.   Hopefully you will too!

My mom and I where in our garden picking tomatoes and she found a tomato worm.  Yukk!  As we looked at the tomato plants closer we came to the upseting conclusion that most of our plants have a tomato worm on it.  Unfornately we only found one more.  Hopefully when we look later we will find more.   As I was looking at the worm, I realized that it is actually very pretty.  To bad it is a worm and it destroys our plants.  In case you have never seen one, they are a bright green color with some white.  I think another name for them is horn worm.  Something else that my mom found in a tomato plant was a bird's nest .  There was no momma bird in sight, but I hope that she is still around.  It would be really cool if we had baby birds in our garden.  Here are some pictures.

My brothers were helping us look for tomato worms.  The boy in the black shirt is our cousin Neil.  Luke is standing next to him and Seth is on the left in front of Josiah.  There are two worms in the jar.  Can you see them? This is the bird nest my mom found.  Pretty cool huh?

Aug. 9, 2007 - A Quick Blog

Okay,  it is almost 10:30 p.m. right now, and I really need to get ready for bed, but I thought I would post a quick blog.

I signed up to take some college classes during my senior year, and I got accepted.  I am very excited - and nervous.   Today I met with the Acting Director of Admissions to get a better  understanding of what taking these classes means.  It went well, which was good.  As always, my mom and dad had more questions than I did, but I mean that in a good way.   I am taking a Sociology and a Psychology class.  After the meeting, I  worked in the garden with my mom, and then I finished a book that I have been reading.  It is titled "How to Talk About Jesus Without Freaking Out" and it is witten by Jim and Karen Covell, and Victorya Michaels Rogers.  If you want to spread God's light but don't know how, read this book!!!!   It is really good.  An interesting fact, the Covell's live in CA, and they attend a church called Lake Avenue Church, which the same church that my parents attended when they lived in CA.

When I finished that book, I started reading James Herrriot's book "Every Living Thing", another really good book.  If you like animals and enjoy laughing, I highly recommend James Herriot's books.  Spoiler warning: There is some swearing in his books, and he writes about drinking, and at times, getting drunk.  Usually though, when he got drunk it was not his intent to.  After reading all afternoon and a good bit of the evening, I finished Herriot, so I have now read six books for school.   Yess!

  Until the next blog,       Rachael

Aug. 4, 2007 - Forty Days and a Golden Calf

I have been reading chapter a day in my Bible for a while and recently I decided to start in Genesis and work my way through the Bible.  About nine days ago I read Exodus 24, and I thought that what I read was very interesting.  Verses nine and ten is where it starts to get interesting.  They read, "Then Moses went up with Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel, and they saw the God of Israel;"   Interesting!  I didn't know that God showed himself to these seventy- four people.

Wait though; it gets more interesting.  I kept reading and in verse 12 it says, " Now the Lord said to Moses, 'Come up to Me on the mountain and remain there, and I will give you the stone tablets with the law and the commandments which I have written for their instruction.'"  Hmm, the stone tablet part sounded familiar.  I then read in verse eighteen "And Moses entered the midst of the cloud as he went up to the mountain; and Moses was on the mountain forty days and forty nights."

This sounded very familiar, so I skipped ahead to chapter thirty-two to confirm what I was thinking.  Guess what?  I was right.  Forty days after God revealed himself to the elders of Israel the people of Israel got tired of waiting for Moses and they said to Aaron, "Come, make us a god who will go before us; as for this Moses, the man who brought us up from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him." Exodus 32:1.  They saw God!   They saw and experienced God!  Then a mere forty days later they choose to worship a calf that was made out for melted earings because they were tired of waiting for Moses to come back.  Forty days!  That is a really short period of time.  I thought that this was very interesting.  And scary!  Think about it.  The Israelites were people just like us.  We have the ability to make the same mistake that they made.  Fortunately, we have the Holy Spirit in us to help lead us and guide us.

I encourage you to read Exodus chapters 24 and 32 for yourself.  Who knows?  You might find something even more interesting.

Jul. 21, 2007 - Youth Trip, and Steven Curtis Chapman

I won't be blogging for a week because I am going to be in Oklahoma with my youth group.   I am soo excited.  Last year was really good.  There were some really good speakers last year, and I am sure that there will be some good ones this year as well.  I am hoping to have a lot of fun.

On another note,  in case you don't know, and you are a Steven Curtis Chapman fan, his website is being revamped, and one the features that is being added is blogs written by his wife, some people who work with him, and himself.   They are, in my opinion, very interesting.  Well, that is all for now!

    Jul. 21, 2007 - Gardening

Okay, well, I am back.  Blogging is a lot harder than it seems.  Hopefully I will get the hang of it soon.

Something I like to do is garden.  Okay, what I really like is the idea of gardening - without my mom I would fail at it.  Anyways, this year we have a fabulous garden.  I think it might be the best garden that we have ever had.  As I mentioned in my last (and first) blog, the beans and cukes are ripening.  We can also see little ears of corn and green tomatoes.  Outside of the garden, we have wild black raspberries and blackberries that grow along the edge of our property.  I love to go out and pick the berries so that we can make jam.  I made two batches of black raspberry jam almost completely by myself. (I had to ask my mom if it was done cooking.)  I was so excited, and I don't even like black raspberry jam.  Well, I have been told to go to bed, and I don't really have anything else to say, so Good Night.
