My friend Princess Gracpian has been asking me to list all my favorite books on my blog, so that others can check them out. She had a birthday recently, so I've decided to oblige her as a sort of present. However, I like too many books to fit them all in one blog entry, so I'm going to list them in separate catagories. Today's catagory is fantasy books. Fantasy (particularly Christian fantasy) is my favorite genre, so it's fitting that I list those books first.
1. The Lord of the Rings
Author: J.R.R. Tolkien
Summary: An epic trilogy about the quest to destroy the Ring of Power and defeat the dark lord Sauron. One of the two best stories I've ever read.
What I Like About It: The cool story, the great characters (especially Sam!), the three-dimensional world, the poetic writing, etc., etc.,....
2. The Chronicles of Narnia
Author: C.S. Lewis
Summary: A seven-book allegorical series about the adventures of children in a magical land called Narnia. The other one of the two best stories I've ever read.
What I Like About It: Again, the characters, especially Aslan, Lucy, and Puddleglum; the beautiful symbolism, the great quotes, and just the overall 'Narnian' feel.
3. The Hobbit
Author: J.R.R. Tolkien
Summary: A hobbit named Bilbo Baggins goes on a quest with thirteen dwarves to reclaim a treasure stolen by a dragon. The prequel to The Lord of the Rings.
What I Like About It: The humour and the way it leads into The Fellowship of the Ring.
4. The Circle trilogy
Author: Ted Dekker
Summary: Thomas Hunter, a young man from Denver, is given the ability to go between two worlds and has to save both of them from disaster. The books are called Black, Red, and White.
What I Like About It: The excitement and intensity, the plot twists, the symbolism, and the ending.
5. 100 Cupboards
Author: N.D. Wilson
Summary: See my last blog post.
What I Like About It: Again, see my blog post.
6. Dragons in Our Midst series
Author: Bryan Davis
Summary: Two teenagers born with dragon traits (such as flying and breathing fire) are called to battle an ancient evil. The books are called Raising Dragons, The Candlestone, Circles of Seven, and Tears of a Dragon.
What I Like About It: The unique ideas, the cool dragons, and the excitement of the plot.
There are a few other fantasy books I like, such as the Inheritance books, but they're just not as good and well-written as the ones I've listed above. If you're looking for a good fantasy book to read, get one of these. I'm sure you won't be disappointed.
