Ways to save money buying next year's material

Posted in General homeschooling

It's that time of the year again. I am going through my catalogues and making long involved lists. This is the fun part. List what you want and think you need. Then comes the not so fun part. BUDGET.

Thankfully I have learned through the years where to spend and where to save my money. Okay stop laughing I have learned some things to save on and spend. It seems like every year something I buy is a loo loo. Then again I find some great tips from  friends and save money!

Here are a couple of tips that I have gleaned....
1.Buy used  Go look at the used curriculum sales. Look at the auctions site like  Edify at home   or eBay ( I have a store at both places selling new sewing patterns if you are interested )

2. Look for free online material Type into the search what subject you are looking for then type in downloadable or worksheets. There are also low cost place that have a lot of material available  EnchantedLearning.com is a nice one especially if you have younger kids. Also I highly reccomend that you get a laser printer when possible it cuts down on the ink costs.

3.Trade with a friend  The most expensive item for most of the texts out there is the teacher's edition. If you have a friend whose children are a slightly different grade trade for the year. Also in teacher's edition you sometimes have extra printable worksheets and a website that supports the text. Also going to a place like Oriental Trader and getting a 12 count package and splitting the cost with a friend can save you money.

4.Don't overlook the library Libraries are now becoming very interconnected so that you can order books from other areas. This is great in my local city where certain books can be loaned from the local university! Long term check outs are also available to teacher. YES you are a teacher stand your ground!

5.Buy quality once  This one is tough for me. I am thrifty...okay I am cheap. This next year we are going to need a microscope. I looked at the prices in one catalogue and blanched. 100.00! Then I found a cheaper, discount place to look and the prices dropped to 30.00$. Yeah I was happy. Then hubby pointed out the lack of magnification in the cheaper one, and the abundance of plastic parts and dials. In my house of sensory dimmed fingers and lack of delicateness the plastic would spell doom before the first month was out. I am going to bite my lip and buy the sturdy, well made, more expensive microscope.

Well my friends back to my dreams and lists. Any coupons or discounts you hear of please drop me a line! Lets share and save! God bless
