• Mar. 8, 2007 - A Poem by Hannah

Hannah wrote this poem not too long ago and I thought I would share it with everyone.

Jesus took our punishment.

He took our cup of death.

Roman Soldiers nailed nails to his hands and feet - they hung him on the cross.

Jesus took our cup of death.

He gave his life for us.

He is a wonderful God!

He took our punishment.

He loved us so much, that he gave up his life for us.

• Mar. 7, 2007 - Foster Care Update

Oh for those who didn't know - - we are planning on fostering a child in the near future:)

We have finished all of our classes (Yippie!) and all of our homestudies needed for fostering a child.  We only need to complete a health inspection now.  Then the paperwork can be handed into the county and they will make the final determination on whether or not we can foster.  So please be praying that the process will not take too long.

We have a 4 day trip planned in April with the church.  Our kids will be staying with friends and we will be going to Maryland for a Leadership conference.  If we are ok'd to foster, we will most likely wait until we return from this trip to take a placement.  However, for our family trip this summer to (MI,IN, and MN) we will bring the baby with us if we are able to.  That will depend on if we have a placement at that time or not.

We are being liscensed for one child under the age of three.  Our friend said that it is easier to have your limit (the amount of children) increased rather than having it decreased.  So we agreed to start with one.

Our friends have given us a crib, a pack and play and some linens to use.  Another friend has a car seat and a toddler bed we can use.  (We don't know if it will be a baby or a toddler)  We still need to acquire a crib mattress, but I believe someone at our church will be able to lend us one for awhile.

Well, I need to finish up some responsibilities before leaving the house early tomorrow.  I have been in St. Pete everyday this week for Dr. apts and the such.  Tomorrow we have an allergy apt.  With the price of gas, I have been riding in with A. Luan and then I spend the day at the church.  Today I did a little shopping. Tomorrow, the kids will work on a science project (leaf classifications).  Friday I get to stay home:)  YEAH!!!!!

• Jan. 3, 2007 - Home Improvements......

Over the break, A. Luan and I were busy little beavers with home improvements.  One them was to paint the bedroom, office, and put up trim (our version of crown molding) throughout the house.   We thought the project would only take a day.....well you know how projects go!  It took about 3 days and we still need to finish painting the trim in the Great Room  and Kitchen.

Here are some pics!
This is the office.  The top color is a creamy butter yellow color.   I really like the way it turned out.  We have put some pillows on the floor so the kids can sit and read books.

This is the bedroom.  The light patch on the red wall is the glare from the window.  Couldn't get rid of it:)  A. Luan found the comforter set at Target on Clearance.  When he got home it matched our colors perfectly!  I was sooo excited!   The red on this wall matches the red in the office.

This is a corner in the Living Room.  The green color is not the same as the bedroom.  It is a sage color in reality.  The yellow is the same as the office yellow.  The rest of the Great Room is this yellow color while the kitchen is painted with this green and the one wall in the living room.  It is really nice when you enter the house.  Eventually on this green wall (it is nearly 20 feet long), a. Luan wants to build bookshelves into the wall.  He will make them with open backs so that the green will show through.

• Jan. 3, 2007 - Time for a long overdue update!

It has been a very busy Christmas break here!  We schooled till the 19th of December and just went back to school yesterday.  What a whirlwind it has been.

Luan bought tickets for The Holy Land Experience in Orlando.  It is a Biblical theme park based on Jerusalem.  They have a replica temple, a replica Tabernacle, shows etc.  It was a really fun time.  In addition to all the historical stuff, there was a small rock climbing wall.  Everyone but me tried it.

Alexander didn't get very far.  He was too short to move between the pegs.  He only gave it one shot, even though you were allowed three trys.

Hannah made it a little farther up the wall.  She gripped and grabbed and hung on with all of her might.  But she still was too short to reach climb between the steps.  Hannah was very sore later because she was so determined to stay up and keep climbing.  Hmm....is that determined or stubborn?

So A. Luan suited up to give it a try.  Did he make it?  Nope!  He made it half way up before he decided he just couldn't hack it anymore.  Just to give some perspective - - a girl about 10 climbed all the way to the top and rang the bell.  No one else could match her feat!

• Dec. 4, 2006 - The Bed is Finished!!!!

Anh Luan has finished the bed and from the photos below you will see how amazing it really is!!!!  A. Luan worked about 25 hours on the bed start to finish.  We still need to add some finishing touches (ie painting it, adding fabric to the doorways/arches and storage areas)  There is even a desk for Alexander to write on.  I am so happy with the results.  Hope you all like it!!!

Anh Luan had to assemble the bed in the bedroom as there is no way it was going to go through the door!  LOL:)

Here A. Luan is working on the top section of the "castle"   On the bottom piece of the board you can see where he drew out the arches for the doorways.  We had sawdust everywhere in the garage!

I took this picture after we had carried these two finished pieces into the bedroom to see how they looked.  The half circles are the ladders to reach the beds.  The bottom bunk is 38 inches from the top of the matress to the floor.

This is the almost finished project.  As you can see we lined under the "dungeon" with black fabric to block out as much light as possible.  A. Luan hung a light under there for Alexander to be able to see.  On the side with the lower bunk we lined the step with blue felt as a peekaboo kind of area.  The area by the window will have a desk eventually.  A. Luan is actually working on it right now.  It will be on a system where we can move the desk up as Alexander grows.

The big square on the right is a large toy storage area.  Behind it (as it only about 15 inches deep) is a secret passage out from under the bed.  So Alexander can go out or in two different directions - which as a 6 yo he thinks is really cool!

• Nov. 20, 2006 - The Four All's

This week's big project is to work on the "The Four All's".  We are currently studying  Midieval society for history.  The Four All's will represent the four levels of society during that period.  The four levels are:  peasants, nobles, royalty, and the church.

We are going to use shoe boxes to construct diaroma's (scences) for each level.  We have purchased clay and will be making thrones, hovels, cooking pots, etc.  I am hoping to be able to post some pictures of the project as we go.  However, I am almost out of photo space for the month.  I will try to get some in though

I am thinking that the project will take a couple of weeks.  Because this week is a truncated week, we will use the entire school day tomorrow to work on the diaroma's.  The kids are excited thinking up ideas for the project.  We will keep you posted on how it goes!

• Nov. 15, 2006 - You do what? When?

I am sure that some try to figure out what school looks like at our little house in sunny Florida.  I thought I would give you an overview of our schedule so you can see how a day takes shape.

We don't school Monday to Friday as a typical school would.  We school  Tuesday through Saturday.  We also use a rotating schedule consisting of 7 days.  Meaning.....We don't label days Tuesday - Saturday.  We say "Day 1"  Day 2" etc.  That way when the "blurps" of life happen, we can keep going and not have to redo assignment sheets, schedules, etc.

Here is what it looks like:

6:30  Kids wake and do chores

7:00  Devotions (they listen to the Bible on CD in their own rooms

7:30  Breakfast

8:15  Memory Work (Scripture, History Timeline, and Bible Chapter Concepts)

8:30  Math

9:00  English Grammar

9:30  Phonics Drills

9:45  Alexander works on Reading while Hannah works on Penmanship

10:00 Hannah works on Phonics/Spelling while Alexander works on Penmanship

10:30  Day 1 and Day 3 - Science Readings/Notebooking

           Day 2 - Art (Impressionists)

           Day 4 - Music (Handel)

           Day 5 and Day 6 - Science Readings/Experiments

           Day 7 - History Projects

11:00  Day 1, Day 3 and Day 5 - History Readings

           Day 2 - Geography

Day 4 and Day 6 - Timelines and Notebooking

           Day 7 - History Projects

11:30  Greek

12:00   Lunch and Worldview selections  (mostly regarding Christian Marytrs)

12:30   Lunch Cleanup and Literature Reading Selections

1:00     Naps

2:00     Tea and discussion on what we have been learning.

The rest of the afternoon is free except for a 30 minute period.  That 30 minutes is called Training in Diligence and is a time when I teach the children how to clean and keep house.  They sweep and mop floors, wash windows/mirrors, dust furniture, clean baseboards, wash out cabinets, clean off fingerprints off walls, etc.  It really helps keep the house clean and they are learning skills they will need later on in life.

• Nov. 10, 2006 - Bedroom Decorations

As many of you know,  A. Luan has been working for several months on painting murals in the kids bedrooms.  Well he finished them up this week.  The kids are on cloud nine!

Here are the final results!

The small tents were originally going to be painted; however, Luan and Alexander have made plans to build a castle bed and that portion of the wall will be covered.  The bed will be a castle bed with a dungeon area (which will contain a dresser and shelves!)

Ariel's Treasure Chest - - This is the small of the murals.

This takes up one whole wall in Hannah's bedroom.  As you can see, not all of the mural was captured by the camera.

Sebastian - - once again to big for the camera.  I was up against the oposite wall trying to fit it all in!

Flounder is the first mural you see as you enter Hannah's room.  I am standing in the doorway when I took this picture.  It even wraps around the corners.

• Nov. 4, 2006 - How do you do school?

Homeschooling comes in all different shapes and sizes.  Even families that use the same curriculum will not do things the exact same way.  That being said - I thought I would give you a glimspe inside a "normal" day at GracePointe aka - the Kitchen Table!

We use a lot of notebooking. "Notebooking?"  you may ask.  Yes - Notebooking.  Think of it as scrapbooking for kids.  Notebooking is used as a means of evaluation.  It (notebooking) asks the kids to draw and write about what they have learned. They have to pull together everything we have read and discussed and put something on paper.  It is really neat to see what the kids come up with.

We are finishing up a three week study on the Vikings.  We have read a book about Eric the Red and Leif the Lucky, their lifestyles, and where they traveled.  It has been amazing.  Today we worked on our timelines and a notebook  page.

Without further delay here are some highlights from todays schooling - - and yes we do school on Saturday mornings so we can enjoy Monday off with Dad:)

Hannah is showing off her timeline.  We were reviewing what we studied about Mohammed, the beginnings of the Islamic Empire, and the Vikings.
Alexander showing off his timeline.  Same time period - - 630 AD - 1000AD.
Alexander and Hannah conferring on how to best draw Viking Armor.  They are using a book we use as a "textbook" to guide their pictures.
Hannah's final product.  She drew a Viking raider and went on to narrate what they were like on the right.  I did the writing as sometimes it is hard to think and write.  Ya know like chewing gum and walking!
This is Alexander's final product.  His picture is about a Viking raider attacking a castle.  The item on top of the Viking is a rock coming out of a catapult.

To find out more about notebooking and what it can include,  you can visit my friend's website.  She has been a wonderful source of information and encouragement to me.  The design on the pages the kids used today were designed by her.  Her website is www.notebookingpages.com

• Nov. 1, 2006 - A trip to the zoo....

This is all the kids that went to the zoo.  Isabel is Hannah's best friend and the Jeffery (the tall one in the back) is Alexanders best friend.  Jon is Jeffery's brother.
These are the Eide boys:  Jeffery, Jon, and Joshua.   We have babysat them before and they are like brothers to Alexander and Hannah.
The kids are petting stingrays at Stingray Bay.  The stingrays have had the barbs taken off so there is not fear of getting stung.  This was the highlight of the afternoon for the kids!!!
Hannah and Isabel next to a huge tank filled with fish and manatees.

• Oct. 26, 2006 - Budding little Business People!

This past Saturday the kids sold soda's and water to the groups working on their houses.  The previous week Maykala (our neighbor girl) sold fruit and made some nice money.  So Alexander and Hannah decided they wanted to try their hand in business as well.  It went slow at first, but as the day warmed up (it was almost 90!) people started coming and buying soda's.  After lunch, the kids decided to go around the neighborhood and see if people wanted anymore.  I drove them around and they sold $5 more of their goods.  Each item was being sold for .50.

After they paid me back for their overhead, they had made a net profit of $9 which they split between the two of them.  That added more fuel to their little fires  They have decided this week that they will sell the same items plus more.  Hannah wants to sell popcorn and Alexander wants to sell popsicles.

I like the "adventure" of it as it teaches the kids how to change money.  "How much is change for a $5 mom when they bought two things? "   We were able to talk about advertising and how companies bring products to people and show how they need them.  At first the kids didn't think they should talk to people about selling their stuff.  A direct quote from Hannah was "But MOM!  They see the sign!  They should come to us."    By the end of the day, their boldness in asking if people wanted a drink had grown leaps and bounds.  Granted they thought they had worked very hard for just $4.50!!!

• Oct. 24, 2006 - Be On the Lookout For Updates!

I am hoping by blogging that I will be able to keep everyone updated on what is going on here.  Instead of writing 30 different emails (which I never get to), this will lend itself to a wonderful means of communication.  Granted - I never thought I would be blogging!!!  So I hope this serves everyone well!!!
