Dec. 8, 2005 - Suggestions or Commands?

As I read the Bible, I must be aware and constantly remind myself

that the ideas expressed are not merely statements of suggestion but are actually commands to be obeyed.

I have noticed in the Thai translation of the Bible, the language is clearer because before the command is given you will notice there will be a word showing that you are getting ready to read at command.  The word could be translated “you must”.

In Philippians 4:8 we are told:

…whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things...

Thoughts that are dishonest, judgmental, and impure not only go against God’s word, but they give way eventually to actions that are dishonest, judgmental, and impure.  I am trying to train myself to be aware of my thinking.  To discipline my thoughts to dwell on truthful, loving and pure thoughts.  Then I will be more likely to find myself loving and serving others from the heart.

This is one of my favorite verses, and we talk about it A LOT as a family. It's so hard for me to right my thinking sometimes~I hope and pray that starting my children young will make it easier for them rather than beginning at thirty! (((((HUGS))))) sandi

One thing my husband always says "if it is in the bible but isn't a command then we can assume that it is wisdom. And if we are not following the items that are wisdom then we are being foolish."
