Jan. 23, 2006 - Herb Garden

Hello from my herb garden!

This is a basil plant that is growing out of hand!

It is even got flowers on the top now.  Does anyone know what to do next?  Should I pinch off the flowers, wait till they turn to seed and then pinch them off?  Should I harvest the entire plant....or can I go on using it continually?  I have had Thai basil in the ground before and just let them grow on and till they became more like bushes than plants, but I have never had sweet basil in a pot before.  The sage that I had in the pot last year, was doing fine and dandy till one day it died.  I did not get the chance to harbest all the leaves before it died.  Boo hoo!  If anyone has any advice, sure would like to hear!

Jan. 23, 2006 - Pinch them off!

I actually got your link from your comment on Mamaduso's site. I saw your Avatar photo and thought, "Okay, not only is she a homeschool mom, but she must be an actress with her own portfolio of pictures to choose from!" You look great. That's also a great photo of you amongst your plants. Then I read some of your other posts and your daughter is just as beautiful as you.
On to your plant...I used to share an office with two women who loved putting herbs in the office window. They each had a basil plant and they always pinched off the flowers right away. At the time I never understood why they did that because the flowers were so pretty and I don't think I still understand why. They always just said, "no, you have to". Maybe if it goes to seed it ends up becoming dormant. I really don't know. I bet if you went to www.ask.com you could get your answer.
Have a great day! I'm adding you to my friend's list.

My experience with basil plants is that you must pinch off the flowers, but after a while the whole plant becomes woody and dies. Maybe this won't happen to you since you don't really have winter there. Are you online???

Wish I could help you, but I have no idea! I just started some herbs last year in my outdoor garden, but am not very familiar with them yet. I would like to start some small indoor ones in my kitchen for year-round use. Your garden looks beautiful!

Ad me to someone who is clueless. I am eager to learn and seeing this gorgeous plant has inspired me to learn more about herbs. I actually have my children learn this stuff so they'll know it. I need to start paying mor attention.

Be blessed,
TNMOM
