Online programs

Posted in School

We finished our first week using Aleks ( math) and Time 4 Learning.  We decided to try out both programs for 1 month to see which program fits which child's needs and to see if there was a way to help mom keep her sanity.
All 4 of our students are fast learners, but they seem to enjoy seeing how many ways they can procrastinate or not do the work at all- they are quite creative.
So far, the kids love it!.  We did have a slight problem with half -hearted attempts in the beginning.  we fixed that by reminding them that the choice was either their best effort online or back to the written waxy.
We have cable internet and a wireless home network.  Time 4 learning doesn't seem to have a big problem with multiple users online at the same time, but Aleks is slow and seems to hang if there is more than one person using the internet.
I am a workbooks and tests kind of teacher, and these online programs cause me a little concern.  Can they learn and have this much Fun?
The next bump in the road is how to put piano practice, dance (Irish step ) practice, nap,and other school things into the schedule, making sure that there is only one person online at a time. We also have to very closely supervise a child (or two) so they have no time to find a way around the safety features.
If you have suggestions , please respond.
