Since we really did not
do anything that would be considered "school" today, I thought I would
take a moment to introduce myself. I am a stay at home mother of
three. My eldest daughter is entering first grade and I also have
a two year old son and a three month old daughter. For
kindergarten, we did a bit of a lot of things I put together
myself and played a lot, when I had the energy to even do that
much. Late last spring, I started searching earnestly for what I
wanted to guide us through the next several years. Every one
around here does Bob Jones, it seems, and a lot of people use
Abeka. My husband wanted a formal, classical education complete
with Latin and Greek. I was drawn more to Charlotte Mason.
The more I looked at things, the more I knew I would not be happy with
many of the more formal home school programs. I just am not a
text book person, I guess. But I had no intention of purchasing a
bunch of text books and then only using the table of contents to help
guide planning and leave the rest unread. I liked the set up of
the more classical education, but something kept bothering me about
it. It seemed to me that all the Greek teaching had not really
done much for the Greek society back when it was used, and it also
seems to me that Paul spoke against their seeking after wisdom. Finally, I stumbled acrosse the FACE
website. I really liked what I read there and showed it to my
husband. He seemed excited as well, so we purchased the materials
we thought we needed to get started. At this point, I have read a
little of every manual we have, but have not really prepared myself
extensively for any subject. The first subject I plan to
formally "PA" is history, but we are using elements of it in all
subject areas as I understand them and am able to apply them. I
am definitely very far from being a model homeschool for the Principle
Approach, but I expect to gradually be "conformed into the image of
Christ" in our home school. I particularly like the emphasis on
the principle of individuality. I like it that thousands of
people can use the same program, and each child will be lead
differently, exploring their unique talents and interests. Like a
mixed forest with each young person firmly rooted in the rich soil of
scripture, and spreading out to fill his niche in the world. Most
schools turn out something more like the first forest I saw in
Germany...thousands of identical trees lined up in neat rows as far as
you could see with all the branches removed as far as you could
reach. It is nice to feel inspired by the work I am
doing with a six-year old, even if it may not all be exactly "right" as
it was originally conceived. And instead of seeking after
wisdome, we are seeking after God, for "the fear of the Lord is the
beginning of wisdom..." Psalm 111:10. We are attempting to seek
God in every subject and to develop the habit of seeking Him in every
aspect of our lives.
